Yanukovych: Ukraine a leading country in Eastern Europe

Jan 28 at 15:50 | Interfax-Ukraine
Ukraine is a leading country in Eastern Europe in terms of democratic development, Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych has said.

"We have recently felt such a friendly attitude to Ukraine from European countries, and there are more positions uniting us, including the issues of the country's democratic development," he said, while answering questions from participants in a Ukrainian lunch organized by the Victor Pinchuk Foundation in Davos, Switzerland on Friday.

"On this path, of course, Ukraine is one of the leaders in Eastern Europe, I would say one of the central countries," he said.

At the same time, Yanukovych noted that Ukraine had yet to tackle seriously the flaws remaining from the post-Soviet period.

"Those shortcomings and that post-Soviet mentality, which often serve as obstacles to democratic processes, are the issues we have to seriously work on," he said.

Yanukovych described this as "homework" that Ukraine has to do in the near future.
