The estimate of relationships is synthesized from the following papers in this issue: Burleigh and Mathews (2004), Pryer et al. (2004), Shaw and Renzaglia (2004), and Soltis and Soltis (2004). Divergence time estimates are mostly based on analyses of molecular data with fossil constraints (Wikström et al., 2001; Pryer et al., 2004) and are augmented by fossil evidence (Kenrick and Crane, 1997; Wellman et al., 2003). Estimates of the number of species in each group are from Judd et al. (2002) and W. S. Judd (personal communication). Groups covered by a particular article in this special issue are circled and connected to the names of the article's authors. "Other conifers" refers to the clade consisting of all conifers except for Pinaceae (see Burleigh and Mathews, 2004). "Lepto. ferns" refers to leptosporangiate ferns
