MENTAWAI JOURNAL This section consists of a number of short, textual, snapshots focusing upon incidents recorded by the author, Glenn Reeves, during a period of extended residence on the island ofSiberut during the early 1990s and a brief period in the latter half of 2000, which also included a visit toSipora. They are intended to give the reader a feel for the texture of daily life as well as providing insight into some of the areas and issues of concern to the local people. This is also the stated intent of the articles in "Ethnographic Particulars". However the textual strategy applied in this "Journal" section represents a different means to the same end. It is generally an attempt to draw closer to the humanity of the local people than was perhaps achieved above. Note that names have been changed to preserve anonymity as much as possible. LOCAL MOVEMENTS TOWARDS AUTONOMY There are no 'people without history', to paraphrase a notable commentary on the subject. This section contains example articles demonstrating the increasing level of social and political activism on the part of local people onSiberut,Sipora, and thePagai Islands. It gives a brief glimpse of the process of history-making currently underway, an understanding of which is critical to a nuanced appreciation of the place that local people are carving out for themselves in the modern world. The articles are drawn, with permission, from early editions of the information bulletin "Puailiggoubat". SURF TOURISM The rapid expansion of surf tourism in theMentawai Islands in the period 1995-2009 has subjected them to world scrutiny to a degree probably unmatched in their history. In this we are possibly seeing the beginning of a new chapter in the relationship between the region's residents and the rest of the world. However there is still some way to go before a clearer picture of the key social, cultural, political and economic dimensions of this engagement emerges. The following links provide some initial insight into this phenomenon.
