It’s not every day that a local film becomes both commercially and critically successful but then again, the likes of "Hating Kapatid" only come once in a long while.
Rated "B" by the Movie Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB) and grossing a whopping P11 M on its opening day last July 21, the Judy Ann Santos-Sarah Geronimo starrer is turning out to be one of the most memorable movies of 2010.
Indeed, the comedy that centers on the story of two sisters who love each other above everything and everyone else has proved to be a respite for a public that has grown weary of flicks with complicated storylines and highbrow artistic intentions, seemingly having everything except heart.
No other actresses but Judy Ann and Sarah could’ve played their roles as well as they did. Although Judy Ann had done comedy before, her timing in "Kapatid" is effortless but sharp. In many of the scenes, the Teleserye Queen delivers punch lines almost in an offhand manner but she brings down the house all the same.
Sarah’s brand of humor complements Judy Ann’s. A natural comedienne, the Pop Star Princess’ girlishness works to her advantage as the inherent charm thaws even the jaded moviegoer. It is to scriptwriter Mel del Rosario’s credit that she made Sarah’s character close to who she really is because it made it easier for her to act out while making the portrayal quite familiar to the audience.
It is said that a company is only as strong as its weakest link but in "Hating Kapatid," no one in the cast is a liability. Luis Manzano is hilarious especially in the scene in which he sings an Ilocano song at a wake. Comedian of the moment Vice Ganda also gave the viewers a lot of "samples;" shining in moments when he had to point out the obvious to his scene partners. JC de Vera got all the swoons and then some.
Director Wenn Deramas, as usual, has his pulse on what Filipinos find funny. He also utilized filmmaking techniques in bolstering comic opportunities such as speeding up a scene to make it animation-like, almost camp (but in a good way).
Now that the film is a certified hit, Viva Films is doubly proud to premiere "Hating Kapatid" globally. These are inAustria; Switzerland; Barcelona, Spain; Ontario, Canada; Manhattan, New York; San Diego, California; Union City; San Francisco, California; Dubai; the Northern Emirates; Guam and Honolulu, Hawaii.
Other stars in "Hating Kapatid" are veterans Gina Pareno, Tonton Gutierrez, and Cherry Pie Picache.
"Hating Kapatid" is supported by Jollibee, Charmee, Selecta, San Miguel, Belo Medical Group, Extreme Magic Sing, Cebuana Lhuiller, Unica Hija and MYX Channel.
