NWR031 DEAD CONGREGATION (Gr) – ‘Purifying Consecrated Ground’ 12"MLP (€11) Having now firmly established themselves prominently among the most elite modern practitioners of death metal, Dead Congregation’s 2006 debut mLP, “Purifying Consecrated Ground” receives a well-deserved and proper reissue. Although “Purifying Consecrated Ground” was eclipsed by Dead Congregation’s 2008 LP, “Graves of the Archangels,” “Purifying Consecrated Ground” is an equally powerful and articulate piece of music. This mLP is among the most eloquent expressions of the darkest and most mysterious elements of death metal. While, compositionally, “Purifying Consecrated Ground” is, overall, a faster and more aggressive recording than “Graves of the Archangels,” it still displays Dead Congregation’s penchant for disorienting and sudden shifts in tempo and key that help define their style. Every movement on this mLP demonstrates the methodical and controlled approach that is characteristic of all of Dead Congregation’s work. Frenzied and sweeping riffs carry subdued and blasphemous melodies through relentless passages of the songs before plunging into the brooding depths of their nightmarish underworld. Then, without warning, Dead Congregation’s sound erupts once more into a horrific display of orgiastic violence. Such shifts, although unexpected and unpredictable, sound perfectly natural when executed by Dead Congregation. So few bands can carry out transitions such as these with the expertise demonstrated here. Through these methodologies, Dead Congregation thoroughly defines the sensations that the listener experiences and directs the response he will have. It is this level of control that sets Dead Congregation apart from so may other bands that attempt to attain a similar effect through their music. “Purifying Consecrated Ground” represents that seed of this style which Dead Congregation would perfect 2 years later on “Graves of the Archangels.” Moreover, “Purifying Consecrated Ground” depicts a turning point at a transitional moment in the history of DM when many within the genre began to move toward a more integrated and transcendent approach. For these reasons, it is necessary to revisit this tremendous recording once more and NWR is honored to present “Purifying Consecrated Ground” in its proper manifestation on 12” vinyl with the brilliant cover artwork restored in color.

FAUSTCOVEN (Nor) – ‘The Halo Of Burning Wings’ D-LP Gatefold(€22) Released in 2003, “The Halo of Burning Wings” marks the first full-length release by Norway’s Faustcoven. As such it represents the beginning of the band’s descent into bleak and hellish landscapes inhabited by a vast array of demonic entities. For nearly a decade guitarist Gunnar Hansen has used Faustcoven as his vehicle to navigate the slowest and darkest regions of the spectrum of Black Metal. On “The Halo of Burning Wings,” FC began constructing the architecture of their unique merger of Doom with second wave Black Metal. Although this particular recording is more blown out, abrasive, and mid-tempo than their subsequent work, FC’s songwriting style is organic and fluid even at the most intense peaks of their attack. Vinyl version released by Nuclear War Now!

FAUSTCOVEN (Nor) – ‘Rising From Beneath the Earth’ D-LP Gatefold(€22) On their second album, “Rising from Below the Earth,” FC further extend the perimeter of their evil shroud across a greater plane until the immensity of their blackness takes on unspeakable dimensions. After adding permanent drummer Johnny Tombthrasher to the line-up, Gunnar Hansen continues to take Faustcoven in the direction of Blackened Doom. On this album, FC delves even more deeply into the Doomier elements than on their first album. The influence of classic Doom permeates this entire recording and the resulting sound is powerful and catastrophic. However, although Faustcoven play slow, Black Metal dirges, they never stray into “suicidal” black metal territory. Similarly, even though their Doom is anguished and dark, it is never of the “funeral” doom variety. Instead, the result is something entirely unique to both genres. Indeed, FC has established a niche at the margins of both Black Metal and Doom and rests, sometimes precariously, on that border.

FUCK YOU ALL (Nor) – ‘Reh 2001’ 7"EP (€8) For those of you who are not familiar with this band: It was a side project of Waklevoren vocalist Gorgon V, and Fenriz of Darkthrone.
