Here I am at the Plots R Us graveyard

DSC_4794

Here’s the Spatula City home!

DSC_4812

Here’s jlingo_23 at Plots R Us

DSC_4817

Yes, you’re seeing correctly: Here we are at Raul’s Apt.!

DSC_4819

Watch out for those flying poodles!

DSC_4823

Here’s a human femur (maybe?) we found downtown next to the UHF City Hall. I picked it up and put it in my trunk, where it still resides until I can find someone that may be able to identify it.

DSC_4832

I’m coming to you live from City Hall! Mayor Thompson! Mayor Thompson!

DSC_4839

jlingo_23 gets in there as well…

DSC_4841

I point to where Noodles Macintosh (the late Billy Barty) is tripped by R.J.’s thug.

DSC_4849

Taking a peek in the dumpster where Gandhi busted some heads!

DSC_4853

Kuni’s Karate School/George Newman and Bob’s studio apt.!

DSC_4855

And here’s where George makes an impassioned plea to have his head bashed in with a crowbar…(fortunately he still owed Bob a whole $5.00)

DSC_4858

I bet these people that live there don’t even have a clue what this is all about!

DSC_4859

And here we come upon the site of Mecca…the station!

DSC_4862

Beautiful, isn’t it?

DSC_4864

Now where could the original building have gone?? I’d give anything to sort through its rubble, and maybe keep the doorknob.

DSC_4866

We were the lucky recipients of Philo’s wave transmissions.

DSC_4868

I have the power! (“claim it from the highest level!”)

DSC_4869

I trod on Holy Ground (former site of the building).

DSC_4872

Where’d it go? Oh yeah! R.J. DID say he was going to turn it into a parking lot!

DSC_4876

Get on down to Spatula City!

DSC_4879

Seven great locations!

DSC_4886

Harden’s Hamburgers still remembers the time (see the memorabilia).

DSC_4907

I’m psyched! I’m ready! The ORIGINAL building that Harden’s used to reside in. But more importantly, Big Edna’s Burgers in UHF!

DSC_4914

And here’s what it looks like today (sad ain’t it?)!

DSC_4924

And here we are recreating being thrown out by Big Edna. Now you know what Weird Al and David Bowe saw on their way to the grass.

DSC_4925

At the last minute, the owner pops her head out to tell us all about the long day of filming back in 1988. She talked about what a nice guy Al is…

DSC_4926

Boo! Hiss! The insidious Channel 8! Michael Richards as Stanley Spadowski braved its interiors more than any person should…(and kept it polished neatly at that).

DSC_4930

Mr! Hey Mr.! Change…Ya got change?!!

DSC_4933

The blues bar where the revolution was televised. We could just hear The Battle Hymn of the Republic wafting through in memorium…

DSC_4950

Though we jumped the bar, we never could find those blueberry daquiris that George sampled.

DSC_4961

This here’s Harvey Bilchick’s residence. We considered buzzing the door to see if Aunt Esther was inside, but we were running outta time.

DSC_4967

And this my friends, is the location of Crazy Ernie’s Used Car Emporium (it’s a giant-supermarket of cars!). The baby seal would’ve been comfortable in the sudden downpour that swept in at the last location of our tour that day.

And that’s about it. We also saw: Terri’s apt., Terri’s dental office building where she worked, and some other assorted minor places, but that’ll tide us over for now. I must make that UHF location tour documentary soon, including interviews with local Tulsans that appeared onscreen as characters!

i had no idea it was filmed in tulsa! do you know why??

Credit that to Gray Frederickson (producer of The Godfather Trilogy, Apocalypse Now, The Outsiders). He grew up in Oklahoma, then headed to LA. After a long illustrious career, he moved back to OK (OKC specifically) to raise his son (he's in his early sixties, and his son was six at the time. He wanted his son "to grow up in a less hectic environment" and he "got tired of traffic". So in 2000 he moved back here to start up a movie studio in OKC. While he was still in LA during the 80's, he recommended that both The Outsiders and UHF be shot in Tulsa because it has a distinctive look and is much cheaper to film in, but is fairly small population-wise (300,000).

I interned with him for two years, and recently worked as a production assistant on a new movie he just produced. Little did I dream that I would one day get to work for the person largely responsible for my favourite comedy movie ever.

The crazy thing is that while on this tour of locations, we were in the downtown area, on a weekend morning, and there was no one around. At all. It was spooky to be in this area that looks like a typical downtown business area, and have it be desolate like the world had ended or something. I figure that I'm giving up a killer oppurtunity to shoot some really large-scale type urban movie there on weekends, without any interference or permits.

Tyler's 13, so he wouldn't have been 6 in 1988.

His daughter is older, though.

[info]monsterofmud
Wow! I had no idea Gray had a daughter. And I thought Tyler was 11 now. Maybe that's me remembering how old he was when I first met him!

The Fog and Little Buddha are 2 movies that I have wanted to see. Maybe one of these days I can make an extensive list such as yours and try to watch some of them. Oh yeah, can I borrow Dead Man?

[info]monsterofmud
Yes, you may! The Fog rocks! See it before the new one with Selma Blair comes out.

Great job putting all this together...that was an awesome daytrip. Hopefully I'll be available to do the documentary with you...I want to interview that waitress from the bar!!!

We definately need to use downtown Tulsa for a shoot...I'm thinking of a scene with Count Chocula and Rainbow Bright...

Do you think it was a wise idea to put a HUMAN bone in the trunk of our car?
:D
