Kosovo & Latvia Open Diplomatic Ties

| 10 June 2008 |

Riga
Riga
Pristina _ Latvia has opened diplomatic relations with Kosovo, the presidency has announced.

The Latvian Foreign Ministry informed Kosovo authorities through a letter sent on Tuesday that as of this day the two countries will enter into diplomatic relations.

“We hope that the establishing of diplomatic relations between our countries will promote bilateral cooperation as well as values of democracy and peace,” the letter from the Latvian Foreign Ministry says.

Latvia was among the first European Union member states to recognise Kosovo as an independent and sovereign republic, following the declaration of independence from Serbia on February 17.

Kosovo has already entered into diplomatic ties with the other Baltic state of Estonia earlier last month.

However none of the Baltic countries is directly represented in Pristina by neither embassies nor other consulate services.

Latvia is an active member of the EU-led mission, EULEX which is expected to be deployed in Kosovo as the body in charge of overseeing the rule of law.
