PG-13
The Soloist, a 2009 movie, tells the story of Los Angeles Times writer Steve Lopez (Robert Downey Jr.) and talented but homeless street musician Nathaniel Ayers (Jamie Foxx). Lopez discovers Ayers on the street and writes a series of articles for the Los Angeles Times about him, which are critically acclaimed. Lopez has good intentions and tries to help Ayers and others among the Los Angeles underclass to have a better life. However, he runs into the tragic reality of Ayers' life, and encounters the true challenges facing the mentally ill and homeless. Ayers and Lopez fight together against these challenges however, and the film is ultimately one of hope which tells of a chance for a better life for both the major characters. The film is shot largely in Los Angeles, giving it a sense of reality and grittiness, and hammering home the honest and realistic portrayal of life on the street to the viewer. The Soloist is a rewarding watch, highly recommended.moreless
