January London Madness film the video for Cardiac Arrest on a double decker bus.They stop every now and then and pick up bewildered old ladies. Cannes Madness attend the French premiere of Take It Or Leave It at the Midem festival. Madness play their only French concert of 1982 which is recorded for TV simulcast. Italy Madness appear in a TV special which is filmed in an Italian circus. February 2nd/11th California.Madness shoot two new Honda commercials.The Japanese ad company CM Land had picked a suburban part of LA because they said it looked like England. 12th Cardiac Arrest released [BUYIT 140]. Highest position 11.Weeks in chart 10. Due to less radio play then usual which is perhaps caused by the title as the BBC had decided that a song about a heart attack victim was not suitable for airplay and promptly banned the record from their playlist.The decision was apparently made following the deaths of a Radio 1 DJ’s relative.At the time Radio 1 was still the most popular and influential station around and the ban certainly hit the record sales.Cardiac Arrest became the first Madness single since The Prince not to enter the top 10. 15th Top of the Pops.Madness perform Cardiac Arrest. 25th The Kenny Everett Show.Madness perform Cardiac Arrest with Lee dressed as Gary Glitter. 18th Germany.Madness appear on the Musikladen TV show. 20th Belgium.Madness appear on TV Generation 80. 23rd Holland.Madness perform Cardiac Arrest on the Top Pop TV show. 7th Great Yarmouth Madness film the video for House Of Fun in a deserted funfair in Great Yarmouth.Then go back to London and to film some more stuff in an off licence.They also film a sequence in Escapade in Camden High Street where they often got costumes and props from. 10th London Jubilee Gardens.Lee and Chris take part in Capital Radios Help A London Child. auction. 13th Bedders appears on the Pop Quiz TV show. 17th Madness appear on Top of The Pops performing Cardiac Arrest. 19th Spain.Madness go to Spain for three days of radio and TV appearances.They also do a photo session with Anton Corbijn.A radio interview is cancelled due to a power failure. 20th Madness answer listeners questions on Spanish radio. 21st Madness play a four song set on Spanish TV. 22nd UK Madness perform Cardiac Arrest on the Cheggers Plays Pop TV show. March 19th/24th Madness go to Holland and Belgium for more TV shows. 20thMadness appear on a French TV show called Generation 80 performing It Must Be Love. They then spend some spare time writing and rehearsing. April 19th Madness head for Spain for a TV show. 23rdThe Complete Madness compilation album is released [HITTV1]. The catalogue number represents the fact that Dave Robinson has actually forked out the money for some TV adverts. Highest position1.Dave Robinson cunningly had the legend 16 hit tracks written on the cover even though the album only contained 12 actual singles.The non singles being Madness/Bed and Breakfast Man/Take it or Leave it and In The City.What a rascal.Although the aforementioned tunes are hit tracks in anyone’s book.This album is tremendously successful.So much in fact that it eventually affects the sales of Rise and Fall in December 1982 as faced with the prospect of getting something Madnessy for one’s loved ones at Christmas is a tough choice.And a lot of people opted for the greatest hits collection. Madness/The Beat and the Fun Boy Three among others take part in The Capital Goaldiggers a five a side football tournament organised by Capital Radio.Madness lost their first and only match due to the fact that a lot of other bands have brought in“ringers” [professional football players]. Madness tour Japan.And Toks returns to the fold on the road crew. House of Fun reaches number one which is the band’s highest chart position yet.The compilation album of greatest hits titled Complete Madness is also at Number 1. Madness do a satellite link up with Top of The Pops who will show the video.The support act is Bow Wow Wow. 23rd Madness appear on the Funky Tomato TV show on the the NHK TV channel. 24th Tokyo Sun Plaza Hall. 25th Madness discover that house of Fun single and the Complete Madness album are both at number one.They don’t go too mad. 26th Osaka Festival Hall.Madness travelled to Osaka on the Super Express bullet train. 27thKyoto Kinro Kaikan. 28th Nagoya Shi Kikaido. 30th Tokyo Shibuya Kokaido. 31st Tokyo Kosei Nenkin Hall.Madness perform House of Fun on the Let’s Go Young TV show for the NHK channel. June 2nd Tokyo.Madness film the second of their Honda ads.This ad featured the new Honda City turbo version. 3rd Record In The City adding the Turbo City Turbo vocals. 4th Filming advert. 5th Filming commercial kung fu type Turbo. 6th Stills shot for ad kung fu type. 7th Filming. 8th Honda ad petrol station type.These ads were a joke at the expense of those garages that wash your windscreen and change the oil etc..However Madness were dressed in Arabic type garments and the Arabian ones were never used as it was thought that they might cause offence. 9th June leave Japan. 30th Lee Chris and Mark take part in a Radio One Roadshow cycling benefit.They’re riding from Wolverhampton to Birmingham.Once they have arrived Lee and Chris reward themselves with a night out to see Roy Orbison play. July London Shepards Bush. Madness film the video for Driving In My Car featuring a Morris Minor.They later drop it from a great height in a spoof of the Volkswagen Golf adverts. 1st Still in Birmingham Chris and Lee join the others to appear on the 6:55 TV show. 10th Saturday Live The UK premiere of Madness’ new single Driving In My Car.Suggs could not appear as his wife Anne was expecting a baby any minute.So Chas took along a ventriloquist’s dummy which he sat on his lap. 20th London Bull and Gate This concert was held for family and friends only.Suggs and the band have good cause to celebrate the birth of his daughter Scarlet. 21st London Dominion The Princes Trust Gala.The line up included Madness Phil Collins Pete Townshend and Robert Plant.Madness were asked to play the National Anthem and did so on kazoos.The Princes Trust Gala was set up by Prince Charles and was attended by the rich and famous.At the end the band bows respectfully to his Royal highness and reveal the letters M-A-D-N-E-S-S on their hats. 24th  Driving in my Car released [BUY 153]. Highest position 4.Weeks in chart 8. 31st Ireland Co.Mayo Castlebar Festival. August 5th London Madness perform Driving In My Car on Top Of The Pops and bring a Morris 1000 into the studio for the occasion. 17th Madness rehearse for an appearance in the third episode of comedy series The Young Ones. 19th The Young Ones TV show.Madness are at the Kebab and Calculator pub performing House Of Fun with Woody on bass and Mark on drums.By the time they're finished Rik Neil Vyvyan and Mike enter the cafe and ask if there's a live band today.Madness say no and blame a power failure among other things.”Do you know Summer Holiday ?”asks Mike.”You hum it and I’ll smash your face in!” threatens Suggs before the band walk offstage.Boring as episode three was called was broadcast on November 23rd. 24th Madness start recording the Rise and Fall album in Air studios Oxford Street. October 8th  The Rise and Fall abum is released [SEEZ 46] Highest position10. 10th Madness leave London for Australia. 12th Band arrive Sydney. 14th Sydney Capitol Theatre support act Zoo. 15th Madness go to Melbourne to host a TV show called Countdown.They mime along merrily to One Step Beyond It Must be Love House of Fun and Driving in my Car.They then go back to Sydney for a second show at the Capitol Theatre.. 16th Sydney Capitol Theatre. 18th Brisbane Madness are given a heroes welcome at the airport by the press plus the assembled ranks of the Brisbane Morris Minor society. 19th Brisbane Festival Hall. 20th Press but no show. 21st Canberra Bruce Stadium support acts Zoo plus Moving Pictures. 22nd Melbourne Palais Theatre after the show the band are taken to the Fun Factory which is a game Park where they amuse themselves till the wee wee wee hours. 23rd Melbourne Palais Theatre. 25th Thebarton Town Hall. 27th Perth Entertainment Centre. November London Wandsworth.Madness film the video for Our House which is set in a small terraced house in Wandsworth and also ex Playboy Casino manager Victor Lownes’ mansion Stocks. 5th Rise and Fall album released. 19th  Our House single released [BUY 163] Highest position 5.Weeks in chart 13. 26th Madness travel to Brussels and film an appearance on a news program at RTB studios.They also film One Step Beyond /Embarrassment/House of Fun and Our House for a TV show called Pop Elektron. 27th Mechelen Volksbelang. 28th Geelen De Hanehof. 29th Amsterdam Paradiso. December 1st Munich Alabamahalle. 2nd Berlin Metropol Before the show Madness visit the Berlin Wall and venture into East Germany.Chas is not allowed entrance due to his Irish passport. 4thFrankfurt Alte Opera. 5th Hamburg Fabrik. 7th London Mark and Woody appear on CBTV. 9th Madness film an appearance on TV AM. 14th Madness appear on Cheggers plays Pop. 15th Madness appear on the Christmas edition of Top of the Pops performing Our House.By now Madness have had a long term agreement with the BBC to show their videos as it’s too much trouble getting them to all turn up at the same time in person.A special set is built to resemble a front room and the band dress up in cardigans and cloth caps as in the video. | |
