2/1/2006: Need to change your password? Do you know your eden orrci password? Log ontohttps://www.cs.rutgers.edu/common/admin/password/using your eden or rci password and change your CS Unix password.
10/17/2003: Be aware that after Sun Solaris 9 installs, insecureservices to the clients will no longer be provided. For example, you will no longer be able to connect via telnet, ftp, rlogin, and rshto the graduate solaris clients. Please use ssh, scp and sftp asviable alternatives for making connections from anywhere to thedesktop clients. The graduate linux machines currently follow this. In theshort future a trust based relationship will be established and youwill be able to ssh between machines within the domain without havingto enter a password. So in the end, it will operate exactly how rshworks now.
10/17/2003: The Sun Solaris Desktops will shortly be reinstalledwith Solaris 9. The current version is Solaris 8. This will affectsome users. For instance, the OpenWindows session will be no longeravailable. Their will be versions of CDE, Gnome 2.0, fvwm andWindowMaker in it's place. Your personal Gnome desktop configurationsettings will not be transferable between Linux and Solaris versions of Gnome, but they willbe set up so as to not interfere with each other. For example, youcould have one background image when logged into a Linuxmachine and a different one when logged into a Solaris machine.I'm now testing to see if the fvwm and WindowMaker configurations willinteroperate between Linux and Solaris OSs. Other things youmay experience are that dynamically linked programs may no longer work,as the Solaris 9 libraries may be different. You could recompile onSolaris 9 or statically recompile on one of the graduate domainservers which will still have Solaris 8 installed. Both optionsshould allow you to keep the programs executable on your desktopworkstation. Lastly, realize that this is a complete reinstallprocedure of the client machines. Please readhttp://www.cs.rutgers.edu/~mcgrew/Software.htmlfor a listing of what software will still be available. Other softwarethat is on your systems currently, may not make it onto the new install. If you haverequests or questions I suggest you email them tohelp@cs.rutgers.eduSOON as possible.
10/17/2003: Connecting into and out of the Grad Domain via XDMCP will shortlybe disabled. This includes using the "Remote login" chooser on Sun Solarisworkstations to select another machine to log into. Please logindirectly to the local machine first and then ssh into another machine. If you do not have an account on the local machine or have any ofquestions, please emailhelp@cs.rutgers.edu for assistance.
8/26/2003:Microsoft Internet Explorer vulnerability.Another vulnerability has been discovered in IE 5 and 6. This vulnerability allows a malicious website to download arbitrary codeand execute it without warning the user. Please patch your IE(using the Microsoft Windows Update feature, for instance), if youhaven't already. (These days, I auto-updateand go viathe control panel every day :-)
8/20/2003:Variant of "Sobig" worm - there's a new versionof the "sobig" worm ("Sobig.F"); it arrives with a bogus "from" field, with subject lines like "Thank you!", or "That movie", and others. DONOT OPEN IT. For more information, seehttp://us.mcafee.com/virusInfo/default.asp?id=description&virus;_k=100561.Information and virusscan updates are available frommssg.rutgers.edu.
8/12/2003:Microsoft Windows RPC DCOM vulnerability. Werecommend you bring your windows (NT/XP/2000/2003) machine(s) up topatch; the most recent security vulnerability ("MSBlast"/"LoveSan")should be patched against as soon as possible. Here'sMSSG'sexcellent patch page for it -- see also theirgeneral windows securitypage.

LISP: Please run lisp on ringo, john, or murray. Running it on paul or george is detrimental to graduate cluster performance.
28 January 2002 - Yet another Windows-affecting worm to watch out for: mail arriving with the subject "new photos from my party!" -- includes what appears to be a (currently yahoo) URL, but is actually a .com file that, among other things, mails itself to everyone in your (Windows, and Outlook Express) address book -- so the message appears to be coming from someone you know. Don't open it.
Survey: DCS Grad students - please take our briefsurvey of what software and hardware you use most (and what you'dlike to see added)

16 March 2002 - Another Microsoft-OS-affecting worm, claiming to be from the "Microsoft Corporation Security Center", subjected "Internet Security Update" tells you to run an attached file to obtain the latest security updates. This message is NOT from Microsoft, and after opening a backdoor on your machine, and setting itself up to run after reboots, it remails itself to everybody in your address book and every other email address it can find on your system. Do NOT open the attachment.
POP/IMAP Problems on paul: If you are experiencing problems using POP or IMAP from paul, change the POP server or IMAP server from paul to paul-77. This is a temporary fix while we are investigating the problem

Experimental:Try ourFacultyFinder, a java-based finder of faculty and staff offices in Hilland Core. This applet is known to run on IE5+, Netscape 4.7+ on PC's,and Macs with IE5+ or Netscape 4.7+ withMRJ 2.2.2, and on DCS unixmachines (you have to enable java, obviously.) Type in the name ofthe person (first name, last name, both, or parts of) you're lookingfor, press "submit" and you'll get a map locating the person's office.(We'd like to put locator beacons on everybody, but we're gettingresistance to the idea for some reason :-)
Check out our new problem-reporting web page, atplease/help. We'd like this to become the new mechanism for reporting (and tracking) problems, and presentation of help documentation. Please help :-) us by telling us what you think! (Mailing to help@cs.rutgers.edu will continue to work for at least a while -- this is a replacement mechanism, but not yet!)
