5. Charles furore grows with Tibet missive

The row over Prince Charles's intervention in politics escalated on
Wednesday night when it emerged that the heir to the throne has written to
the Foreign Office about China's occupation of Tibet. Senior Whitehall
officials reacted angrily to claims that the government had leaked private
correspondence from the Prince of Wales as the full scale of his contact
with politicians became apparent.

Among the regular letters he fires off to members of the cabinet. the
prince - a friend of the exiled Tibetan leader, the Dalai Lama - has written
to the Foreign Office about the treatment of Tibet, which was annexed by
China in 1950. The timing of the letter is not known, but it followed the
1999 state visit to Britain of the Chinese president Jiang Zemin.

The prime minister's official spokesman said Mr Blair had an "excellent
relationship" with the prince and "welcomes the fact that he keeps in touch
with him and other ministers". Among ministers targeted are Clare Short,
international development secretary, Tessa Jowell, culture secretary, and
Margaret Beckett, environment secretary. The prince is also thought to have
contacted the Home Office about asylum.

The monarchy has traditionally avoided political involvement, but leaks have
revealed interventions on issues ranging from farming to political
correctness. St James's Palace defended the Prince of Wales saying he "takes
an active interest in all aspects of British life and . . .believes his role
is to highlight problems and represent views which are in danger of not
being heard".
