IGN PS2 Best of 2004 Awards

There's no doubt that 2004 was the best year for videogames in an entire generation. Though last year offered a nice selection of titles across multiple platforms, it was 2004 that pushed the envelope in terms of new and creative ideas, better-than-ever sequels, and technical achievements that we had to see to believe.

The PlayStation 2, in particular, was far and away the most popular system to own this year. Offering the largest selection of Triple-A games compared to every other console on the market, the PS2 proved that it was more than worth the price of admission with dozens of titles likeJak 3,Snake Eater,San Andreas, andUp Your Arsenal bringing millions of gamers experiences that aren't available anywhere else.

Could the lineup this year be the PS2's swan song before the next generation of systems splashes on the scene? Or will next season bring us an even better selection of titles? Whatever the outcome this is for certain: this year rocked, and regardless of what the future holds, it's a fact that'll never change.

$49.99

Publisher: Rockstar Games |Developer: Rockstar North
Why it Rocked: In support of its already-terrific gameplay mechanics,Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas has an equally powerful storyline. Boasting the most mature and realistic plot of any of theGTAs so far,San Andreas's gritty portrayal of 1990s South Central Los Angeles literally has it all. It's brutal and hilarious at the same time, offers a fine selection of memorable and identifiable characters, and provides several interesting plot twists that most of will never see coming. Best of all, it ties in extremely well with the previousGrand Theft Auto mythos -- and offers some of the coolest videogame moments we've ever seen.
Runner(s)-Up:Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater |Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne
