COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. Volleyball fans will have their fill of televised matches to choose from once the 2004 Olympic Games begin next month in Athens, Greece. NBC released its Olympic television schedule last week, and both beach and indoor volleyball were well represented.
For the overall Olympic Games, the networks of NBC (NBC, MSNBC, CNBC, USA, Bravo, Telemundo and NBC HDTV) will broadcast an unprecedented 1,210 hours more than the past five Summer Olympics combined.
The 24-hour coverage will include action from all 28 Summer Olympic sports for the first time, with volleyball featured on NBC, MSNBC, Bravo, CNBC and Telemundo. Over the 17 days of the Athens Games, the networks of NBC will average more than 70 hours of Olympic coverage per day.
The network has scheduled coverage of both beach and indoor volleyball for each day of its respective competition. Beach volleyball goes from Aug. 14-25, while indoor volleyball is the only sport that runs for the duration of the Olympics (Aug. 14-29).
Each one of the pool play matches involving the USA mens and womens national teams (10 in all) are scheduled to be broadcast on one of the NBC stations, highlighted by a live telecast of the USA womens final pool play match against three-time defending Olympic gold medalist Cuba on Sunday, Aug. 22 (2:30 p.m. Eastern Time).
Many other matches not involving the United States are also scheduled to be broadcast in some form.
NBC has also scheduled at least 16 live broadcasts of beach volleyball involving not only the four USA teams that will be in Athens (two womens, two mens), but other teams as well.
