History

Scott Meredith helped to revolutionize post-World War II American publishing. Starting in 1946 with a one-room office and P.G. Wodehouse as his first major client, Meredith quickly built and maintained one of the largest literary agencies in the world. Meredith launched and/or guided important parts of the writing careers of Poul Anderson, J.G. Ballard, Marion Zimmer Bradley, Arthur C. Clarke, Jude Devereaux, Philip K. Dick, Abba Eban, Ernest K. Gann, Gerald Green, Syd Hoff, John Jakes, Harry Kemelman, Meyer Levin, Ed McBain/Evan Hunter, Norman Mailer, Henry Miller, Jessica Mitford, Don Pendleton, Ellery Queen, Elliott Roosevelt, Carl Sagan, Robert Silverberg, Art Spiegelman, Margaret Truman, Morris West, Garry Wills and Timothy Zahn.

Scott Meredith was an innovator. He was the first to use auctioning techniques to the advantage of the writer. He was one of the first to recognize the importance of the international marketplace and early on built a specialized foreign rights department. He was one of the first to see the importance of tie-in marketing projects -- the 1962 novelization of the movie West Side Story remains in print today. He was one of the first to assemble the ghost-written celebrity book when in 1968 he sold THE SENATOR by Drew Pearson (written by Gerald Green). Scott Meredith followed with hundreds of such tie-ins and collaborations.

Scott Meredith was committed to new writers. HisDiscovery Program launched more than twenty-five writers actively publishing today, including Simon Green, John Lutz, Bill Pronzini, Jennifer Roberson and Julie Dean Smith. This commitment came from his own experience as a writer. A colorful, outspoken personality, Mr. Meredith was a writer and editor himself. He sold his first story in his teens, and as a young man Scott Meredith wrote and edited extensively for the pulp western and mystery magazines and paperbacks. He was one of the earliest mainstream supporters of science fiction. His own book,Writing to Sell, became a classic as a guide book for writers. His praised biography, GEORGE S. KAUFMAN AND HIS FRIENDS, was one of his proudest achievements.

Scott Meredith's proud legacy is the foundation of a leading literary agency for decades to come. Commitment to writers will forever remain the foundation of the agency that proudly bears Scott Meredith's name.

Arthur Klebanoff bought the agency after Scott Meredith's death in 1993. Arthur brought with him his own list of stellar clients, including former Senator and Presidential candidate Bill Bradley, cooking legend Sheila Lukins (the goddess of The Silver Palate), Linda Goodman, who popularized astrology (Sun Signs, Star Signs, Love Signs, and Relationship Signs), naturalist Roger Tory Peterson, who popularized birding and business legend and now Mayor of New York Michael Bloomberg. In addition, Arthur brought with him a collection of corporate clients he had cultivated over the years including Mayo Clinic and Easton Press, the leading leather-bound publisher.
