Chicago Center for Jewish Genetic Disorders

Welcome to the home of the Chicago Center for Jewish Genetic Disorders, a collaborative effort of the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Chicago, Children’s Memorial Hospital, and the Illinois Jewish Genetic Disorders Committee.

This site is for anyone concerned about the genetic health and well-being of individuals and families in the Jewish community.

What are Jewish Genetic Disorders

Highlights

It is estimated that everybody carries 6 - 8 disease-producing genes, which would be harmful if passed on to our children by both mother and father. Many racial and ethnic groups have "their own" genetic disorder disorders which are not unique to the group, but which occur more frequently in the group.

The "Jewish" genetic disorders are a group of conditions that are more common among individuals of Jewish descent. Although these disorders can occur in the general population, they do so at a significantly lower frequency than in the Jewish population.
