"These players are the personification of everything that Nike football stands for," says Stefan Olander, Nike Europe's Brand Communication Director. "They are creative, exciting and innovative when it comes to finding the single touch needed to score a goal and win a game. They also represent the spontaneity, joy and skill of the game, and hopefully all those features come out inSecret Tournament."

THE MECURIAL VAPOR

It is our lightest, most innovative football boot ever. The Mercurial Vapor helps players maximize their speed, agility and touch on the world's greatest stage. Watch it blur by on the feet of Henry, Ronaldo, Lopez, and Nakata.

Innovation is seen and felt from the ground up. 1. A move from traditional flat bottom lasting to a last that mirrors the contour of the foot. 2. The contoured design enhances heel cushioning by allowing the fatty tissues around the heel to naturally protect and cradle the foot. 3. NikeSkin materials are wrapped to conform to the natural curvatures of the foot without compromising strength or structure. NikeSkin decreases the need for traditional textile layering and reduces the thickness of materials by almost 3mm. 4. With the foot positioned just 3mm away from the ball the super-soft feel NikeSkin, provides ultimate touch-sensitivity and control. 5. NikeSnap technology, an exclusive new interlocking system, allows players to change the length of their studs in a matter of seconds. 6. Stability, comfort and function weighing in at a mere 196 grams.

"As a football brand, Nike understands the players' need to have innovative product that helps them perform at their highest level," explained Mercurial Vapor Designer, Peter Hudson. "We committed about three years of research and development to the Mercurial Vapor. We set out, first and foremost, from a functional standpoint to make an ultra lightweight performance football boot with absolutely no compromises. A boot that would raise the bar in terms of player expectations on both a functional and an aesthetic level."

Nike Football has dedicated three years of research and development, 2,000 plus hours of testing with over 200 players globally, and a full time core product creation team of eight people dedicated to the genesis of the Nike Mercurial Vapor.

COOL MOTION KIT

For more than two years, Nike has been developing Cool Motion, a revolutionary technology incorporated into national team apparel that helps a player deal with the extremely high heat and humidity they will experience during the most important football tournament of their life.

"When Nike started designing the new kit there were three key issues that we had to address: weight, comfort and heat/humidity." explained Craig Buglass, Nike's Football Creative Project Designer.

Nike's Cool Motion technology is the answer. The apparel consists of two specific layers – one Dri-FIT inner layer and one hydrophobic (water-repellent) outer layer with mesh ventilation panels. The Dri-FIT microfibre fabric quickly pulls perspiration away from the skin and spreads the moisture over a wide surface area for quick evaporation. "The two layer concept works in a way similar to the bellowing effect of a chimney," said Buglass. "When a player runs, air is channeled in through the lower ventilation panels and then distributed over the torso, before leaving through the upper vents."

The result is that the shirt retains less moisture and body heat regardless of the weather conditions. The shirt is also 22% lighter than Nike's previous national team shirt. The national football teams of Brazil, Portugal, Korea, USA, Russia, Nigeria, Croatia (and Belgium) will be wearing the Cool Motion technology in Japan and Korea.

THE NIKE GEO MERLIN VAPOR

Rounder and faster, two words that don't usually go together.

First there was the original Nike Geo technology and the DART (Dynamic Acceleration Response and Touch) layering system, which made the Geo Merlin one of the most talked about footballs of recent years, and became the official ball of Spain's Liga and the English Premiership.

Now, the Geo Merlin Vapor is having an even greater impact, with the speed of the ball having been increased by 1.5 percent. Richard Avis, Director of Advanced Research and Development for Nike Soccer Equipment, eschews all double entendre in explaining the root of the evolution. "We are very focused on bladder technology, because the bladder has a lot to say about the personality and performance of a football."

This resulted in a slight modification in the thickness of the layering materials without changing the layering order – as well as a small change of the bladder. Because of this Nike was able to increase the rebound properties of the Geo Merlin Vapor, which in turn, translates into the ball's speed uptake increasing by 1.5 percent.

"When you are talking about a player like Roberto Carlos, this increase is remarkable. For someone who can really hit a ball hard, that extra 1.5 percent is going to be represented in an extra couple of inches of travel in less time."

Everything about Nike's presence at the world's #1 sports event reveals our central skill, innovation. It is the competitive advantage we seek in every aspect of sports performance.
