| “ | Wheatley: I amnot amoron! GLaDOS: Yes you are! You're the moron they built to make me an idiot! Wheatley: Well how about now!? Now who's a moron!? Could a moron...PUNCH... YOU... INTO... THIS... PIT!? HUH!? COULD A MORON DO THAT!? Uh oh. | „ |
| ~ Wheatley's villainous breakdown as he denies that he is a moron and punts Chell and PotatOS into a deadly pit, his most famous quote. |
| “ | Hello! This is the part where I kill you! | „ |
| ~ Wheatley springing his death trap. |
TheIntelligence Dampening Sphere, better known asWheatley, is the secondary antagonist ofValve Corporation'sPortal series, intially serving as the deuteragonist, and later the main antagonist ofPortal 2.
He is an Intelligence Dampening Sphere, and as a result, was designed to be as dumb as possible as a way of gettingGLaDOS to behave. He is also the second archenemy ofChell, although he starts out as her partner and friend.
He was voiced byStephen Merchant in his first villainous role, who also played Darren Lamb inExtras, Stuart Pritchard inHello Ladies, Paris inGnomeo and Juliet andSherlock Gnomes, andCaptain Deertz inJojo Rabbit.
Personality[]
| “ | He's not just a regular moron. He's the product of the greatest minds of a generation working together with the express purpose of building the dumbest moron who ever lived. And you just put him in charge of the entire facility. | „ |
| ~GLaDOS on Wheatley. |
As he was created to literally be the stupidest robot who ever lived, Wheatley is certainly very incompetent and stupid, GLaDOS mentions that he isn't just a regular moron, but the product of people who designed him to be a moron, he shows a lot of stupidity between most of the game; however, he can be intelligent at times, as he came up with the plan to disable GLaDOS' systems before directly confronting her.
Originally, he started off as extremely kind and helpful, being a direct ally to Chell who wanted to help her escape the facility, he was extremely kind and cheerful towards her, and tried to do whatever he could to help her, even after getting literally crushed he tried his best to get back to Chell and get her out of GLaDOS' tests, and the two made a breakout and confronted GLaDOS.
Unfortunately, Wheatley had turned evil after entering GLaDOS' mainframe, something that was implied to be because of corruption from her mainframe. While he remained affable and kind towards Chell, he still had forced her and GLaDOS, whom he turned into a potato as revenge for calling him a moron, do tests, and attempt to kill the both of them after they ran out of usefulness, after they escaped, he attempted to literally get Chell to kill herself, then engaged in a boss fight with her.
He is very talkative and affable, constantly talking a lot and having a lot of lines, he constantly talks to Chell, the opposite of her given how she never speaks. He is also remorseful, as after being launched into space by Chell and GLaDOS, he stated how he felt remorse for what he did to Chell and hoped he could meet her again, and apologize to her, it's implied this was because he was no longer in GLaDOS' mainframe, and thus is no longer corrupted.
Biography[]
Background[]
According to GLaDOS, Wheatley was originally designed by the Aperture technicians as an "Intelligence Dampening Sphere." His intended function was to render GLaDOS less dangerous by generating a constant stream of stupid ideas, thereby distracting her and hampering her decision-making process in hopes that she would remain somewhat docile. At some point however, he was separated from GLaDOS and moved throughout the facility to do different jobs. Wheatley states that at one time he almost got a job in the manufacturing department, but lost to another duplicate of the foreman. The only known duty that Wheatley has over the Enrichment Center is what he considered the least desirable job available — attending to what he reffered as "smelly humans" in the Extended Relaxation Center.
Portal 2[]
Many years after the events ofPortal, Wheatley finally decides to awaken Chell from stasis in the Relaxation Center, as he has become concerned of the slowly deteriorating reactor core. Unaware of Chell's history with GLaDOS, he chooses her because she is the last surviving test subject and suggests that they help one another escape.
The duo journey together through the defunct and heavily damaged facility as Wheatley babbles incessantly. Although Chell does most of the work and has to figure out how to bypass many obstacles on her own, Wheatley does prove to be a useful asset. He can be plugged into various Personality Core input ports, allowing him to access the mainframe to open doors and wall panels, although he is very shy about doing it, preferring that Chell look away.
After reuniting with Chell, he explains to her that the only known exit to the surface is through the Main Breaker Room within the Central AI Chamber. Although it is unclear what sort of experiences Wheatley has had with GLaDOS, he appears to be well aware of how dangerous and vindictive she is, also regarding her with well-justified fear.
After getting across the remains of GLaDOS in the Central AI Chamber to find an escape pod, they eventually reach a massive cylindrical room underneath, populated with breaker switches and containing what appears to be an escape pod to the surface. Wheatley warns Chell thatonly the switch to power the escape pod should be flipped, so she searches for it. Almost immediately, the neglected equipment malfunctions and the floor below them reveals itself as an elevator that begins ascending, flipping all the switches on the periphery in the process, before finally being brought in front of an awakening GLaDOS. Acutely aware of the damage that has been done, Wheatley scrambles to find an abort password while turning his face plates on themselves and moving the diaphragm of his unique eye, forgoing a practical algorithm for a sequential brute-force strategy: "A-A-A-A-A-umm.. A? Okay... A-A-A-A-A-C? Wait, did I do B? Do you have a pen? Start writing these down!"
The climb halts as the platform comes flush with a door leading to an overgrown courtyard now housing the dormant remains of GLaDOS. Having failed to find the abort password, Wheatley rightly fears her reaction. As the duo approaches, she rises and immediately recognizes Chell. After a short monologue, GLaDOS lifts up the duo with several robotic claws and crushes Wheatley. She then has Chell sent back into the Testing Tracks through the Incinerator Room. Wheatley survives the incident, and the official Valve guide explains that he managed to reactivate himself through the use of a spare core.
During Chell's tests, he can be seen lifting panels to observe her from outside the testing areas. Eventually, he helps Chell escape from the testing course. After some running, he unveils a plot to sabotage the turret production line and neurotoxin filters. Having shut down GLaDOS' two main weapons against Chell, they return to the Central AI Chamber to dismount her and replace her with Wheatley. Once he is attached to the body of the Central AI, he gains control of the entire facility and calls an elevator to the surface for Chell.
Gloating in triumph, the power of operating the entire facility overwhelms Wheatley and he shows signs of going mad with power almost immediately. He humiliates GLaDOS by attaching her personality core to a potato battery and quickly changes his mind about giving Chell her freedom. GLaDOS eggs him on, exploiting his insecurities by revealing his origin as a profoundly stupid "intelligence dampening sphere" and pointing out that Chell did all the work in engineering their escape. In a fit of anger and paranoia, he accuses Chell of ordering him around and taking advantage of his hard work. Thrashing about in rage, he punches the elevator several times and sends GLaDOS and Chell plunging into the forgotten bowels of the facility. After the two are gone, he begins rebuilding the entire facility in his own image, renaming it "Wheatley Laboratories," combining turrets with cubes and plagiarizing GLaDOS' testing tracks as his own.
When GLaDOS and Chell return, the resulting lab is in chaos and the reactor core is in danger of a nuclear meltdown due to Wheatley's incompetence. Despite this, Chell manages to access the core room housing Wheatley. After a brief fight, Chell corrupts Wheatley with cores provided by GLaDOS, causing a core transfer. However, Wheatley had booby-trapped the core transfer stalemate button (used when the substitute core and the corrupt core have a conflict over the transfer), destroying it. But Chell is not without other options: a hole in the ceiling reveals the night sky outside and she shoots a portal at the Moon. Once the portal opens up on the moon, a powerful vacuum is created and Chell and Wheatley are sucked out into space through the other portal, with Chell desperately clinging to Wheatley, both of them held on by a single wire. GLaDOS quickly uses a grabbing arm to snag Chell's hand, pulling her back to safety and sending Wheatley flying into the depths of space.
In a post-credits scene, a genuinely penitent Wheatley is shown floating aimlessly in space (along with the Space Core, who's orbiting around him), remorsefully remarking on all the terrible things that he had done and wishing he could say "Sorry."
Other Appearances[]
LEGO Dimensions[]
| “ | Well as I don't really know how I got back here, what we should do is crack on with these tests and try and retake over the fac… I mean, escape… by that, what I mean is escape, just yeah, just escape, let's get going. | „ |
| ~ Wheatley almost telling Chell his plan. |
Wheatley returns in thePortal 2 campaign as the deuteragonist. He first appears when he somehow spawns through a blue portal in a test chamber. He is also fitted with antigravity, making him able to fly around as he pleases. He claims to want to help Chell escape again, even though he obviously plans on taking over the facility. Though she doesn't speak, it is even clear that Chell is suspicious of his motives at first. He seems to be much more antagonistic this time around, making arrogant comments and openly taunting GLaDOS. He does act remorseful for what he's done previously. Instead, he goes on about how glad he is to be working together with Chell again.
Eventually, Chell and Wheatley fall into the depths of the facility when an elevator breaks. Wheatley attempts to use his antigravity to save himself, but it isn't enough. Chell doesn't catch Wheatley (much like the first game), and Wheatley sarcastically thanks her.

Chell and Wheatley inLEGO Dimensions.
When Wheatley realizes they are in old Aperture, he panics, stating that it is full of vicious birds. Wheatley later apologizes for trying to bump Chell off when the elevator broke to save his own skin, and asks if they can be "BFFs".
After some testing, they discover an elevator that Wheatley realizes he can power, much to his excitement. However, after failed attempts at plugging himself in, Chell slams him into the port, and the elevator goes up. They eventually confront a cheerful GLaDOS in her chamber. When GLaDOS reveals that the Space Core also showed up, Wheatley has a minor rant about how annoying he is which, ironically, is annoying enough for Chell to punch him. GLaDOS then starts pumping neurotoxin into the room.
Wheatley suggests that they repeat the old core transfer procedure by damaging GLaDOS and inserting theSpace Core into her body. He's very satisfied when Chell manages to beat the other AI. Chell and Wheatley quickly put Space Core in charge of the facility, and the neurotoxin emitters are disabled. Afterwards, the duo enters a hidden room with a blue portal that takes them back to the hub world, thereby ending the campaign.
Team Fortress 2[]
Wheatley appears inTeam Fortress 2 as the Ap-Sap sapper for theSpy. He functions identically to the regular sapper but has exclusive voice lines when equipped and sapping buildings.
Powers and Abilities[]
- Flight: Wheatley can freely fly through the air, as seen inLEGO Dimensions.
- Control over Aperture: Wheatley can plug into various areas in Aperture Laboratories, allowing him to take control of many of its functions and power things like elevators. This ability is highly enhanced when Wheatley replaces GLaDOS, gaining complete control of the facility.
- Flashlight Eye: Wheatley's eye can function as a flashlight.
- Bombs: Wheatley can summon and throw red bombs.
- Teleportation: Wheatley has been shown to possess the ability of teleportation. This has thus far only been seen inLEGO Dimensions.
- Portal Creation: Also inLEGO Dimensions only, Wheatley can open portals. This has only been done once, at the beginning of the Portal campaign, when he enters the facility.

| ~ Wheatley expressing his remorse of everything he did after his defeat. |
Trivia[]
- Wheatley's final words during his defeat ("Grab me!") is a throwback to an early part of the game, where Wheatley shouts ("Catch me!") as he disconnects himself from his management rail. The player does not catch him in the beginning, nor is Wheatley grabbed in the ending.
- Wheatley was originally supposed to be killed off early in the game, most likely in the scene where GLaDOS crushes him by one of her claws, but his popularity with play testers during the demo caused Valve to not only spare Wheatley from getting killed in the aforementioned scene, but also considerably increased his screen time than originally planned in the final game.
- A Spy weapon inTeam Fortress 2 called the Ap-Sap is based on Wheatley and uses his voice.
- Because Wheatley's handles disappeared once he became the central AI, it is unknown how he gets them back once he gets sucked into space.
- The final battle with Wheatley is nearly the exact opposite of the battle with GLaDOS in the first game. Where GLaDOS had to have cores taken off of her and destroyed to be defeated, Wheatley had to have cores puton him to corrupt him enough to cause a "stalemate resolution".
- When GLaDOS attempts to destroy Wheatley with a paradox, it goes completely over his head, but shuts down all the frankencubes in the test chamber, implying that they're smarter than Wheatley.
- When Wheatley takes over GLaDOS' body, his handles disappear. It is not until the climatic scene where he is sucked into space do they reappear.
