| “ | Whatever. | „ |
| ~ Vanessa Doofenshmirtz's catchphrase. |
| “ | No,Dad, you're basically a nice guy who's pretending to be evil, and you know it seems like it's all out of obligation to your backstories, not something that truly comes from your heart. | „ |
| ~ Vanessa accurately describing her father's true personality. |
Vanessa Doofenshmirtz is one of the two secondary antagonists (alongsideNorm) of the 2007 Disney Channel animated seriesPhineas and Ferb, and a minor character in the 2016 Disney Channel animated seriesMilo Murphy's Law.
She is the teenage daughter and occasional apprentice ofHeinz Doofenshmirtz.
She is voiced byOlivia Olson, who also playedMarceline Abadeer inAdventure Time.
Biography[]
Phineas and Ferb[]
Vanessa tends to assist her father in few of his schemes, though she expresses disapproval of it. In the first season, she considers her father to be an embarrassment at best, believing that his shenanigans are threatening her reputation over other people. She also is exasperated of his attempts to bond with her by having turning into the art of evil, to which she does not care for. In addition, similar to Candace trying to bust her brothers to their mom Linda of their ideas of fun, Vanessa tries to catch her father in doing something evil and bust him to her mother Charlene, but she miserably fails every time when Charlene arrives to the scene and calls it off, which has left Vanessa really upset. She also feels extremely miserable in her birthday because her father always put up a childish party every year that makes her feel embarrassed, though this was changed when Heinz's nemesis, Perry the Platypus, helps him out in putting up her 16th birthday party, which turn out to be a success.
However, in the second season, this all started to change when Heinz bought in a Mary McGuffin doll, exclaiming that he spent years searching for the discontinued doll ever since Vanessa was 7 years old and that he couldn’t care less of his reputation as an evil scientist as long as her happiness remains important to him. Realizing this, Vanessa returns the favor by thanking her father for the doll. She even appreciates of the time of when he actually taught her how to drive a car. As the series progresses, Vanessa's relationship with her father starts to improve for the better; in the episode "Brain Drain" when Heinz puts an spectacular rap beat on the DJ box (with Perry's help) to impress Vanessa's friends at the DJ party, a touched Vanessa kisses her father on the cheek as thanks. She even shows spontaneous affection for him, one great example is in the episode "Minor Monogram", where she explained that she’s attracted to thebad boy types because of her father's reputation as a villain, and she even hugged him to prove the point when he suggested that she stop going for the bad boy types, a statement she would later agree on. She even cheered up her father's robot assistantNorm by giving her headphones to him following the latter's failed attempt to have Doof acknowledge him as his 'son'.
As of currently, Vanessa starts to become a little tolerant over her father's eccentric behavior. Also, despite denying it so many times, she admits to being a little evil in nature, having swiped off her Mary McGuffin doll from a little girl, stealing a scooter in Paris, and deceiving and threatening Major Monogram and Perry by using her hairdryer as a gun to save her father from being arrested. She was even impressed that her father had managed to build two giant propellers that can actually dislodge the Tri-State Area from the face of the Earth. Starting off in the episode "Sipping with the Enemy", Vanessa is dating Monogram's son Monty, as they both keep their relationship as a secret from their warring fathers.
In the episode "Doof 101", Vanessa is shocked to find out that her dad will be her new science class teacher, since his last scheme puts him in trouble with the authorities and that he was given a chance to do community service as a teacher rather than getting a prison sentence. At first, Vanessa is very uneasy about this, feeling that she might get embarrassed by him again, but after he puts up a good lecture on genetics and manages to rectify a situation (with the help from Perry) involving a mutation on her ex-boyfriend Johnny, she decides to accept her father as her new teacher.
In the episode, “Act Your Age” it’s revealed that Vanessa becomes Ferb’s girlfriend 10 years in the future when their age difference didn’t become a problem. It’s implied that Vanessa and Monty broke up before dating Ferb.
In the fourth season finale "Last Day of Summer", Doof learns that Vanessa wants to move out, believing that she thinks of him as a loser because of his past failures, just as he formulates his latest plan to create a Tri-Governor's Mansion in Danville so that he can become the first Tri-Governor of the Tri-State Area. Through a series of time loops (due to a previous -inator he built), Doof manages to succeed in his goal and showed this to Vanessa to prove that he is no longer a loser anymore. However, Vanessa isn’t impressed by this (despite finding her new First Daughter suite to be pretty) and later reveals the true reason why she's moving out: she only wants to have an internship at O.W.C.A. and that she can’t join it if she’s still living with her father, since he’s one of O.W.C.A.'s wanted enemies. Vanessa adds that both the internship and her father's aim in doing evil are creating a dilemma for her, which is making her very depressed. She then asks her father if he's really happy with his new job as Tri-Governor, which made Doof realize that he's unhappy in ruling the Tri-State Area (due to his overly-crowded schedule). Deciding that Vanessa's happiness is more important, Doof decides to give up his evil ways and allows Vanessa to join the internship, much to her delight. She’s last seen talking with Doof, Norm and Perry about their past adventures while eating muffins.
However, in the fifth season, Vanessa is unsurprised to learn that her father is reverting back to being evil, though she shrugs it off as she spends most of her times hanging out with Monty, Candace and Stacy. However, she still provides a little support for her father (in spite of her indifference towards his evil schemes); she even posed in as a cheerleader forL.O.V.E.M.U.F.F.I.N. during their soccer match against the O.W.C.A. agents. In "Dinner Reservations", both Vanessa and Monty come clean about their relationship to their fathers, who both agree to let this be.
Milo Murphy's Law[]
Vanessa was briefly mentioned in the special "The Phineas and Ferb Effect" when Phineas and Ferb met Doofenshmirtz again during thePistachions' attack, recognizing him as Vanessa's father.
Eventually, Vanessa appeared in the episode "Adventure Buddies", where she learns that her father lost his building following the Pistachions' demise and that he has built a place for himself and Norm to live in the Murphys' backyard. After getting her father's head out from a cement block that he accidentally created, she tried to convince him into patching things up with Perry, but Doofenshmirtz is still annoyed over the fact that Perry was watching him even after he retired from evil (despite Perry's regret over it). Vanessa then convinces Doof to make out with a new adventure buddy and says hello to Milo's mother Brigette before leaving. Little did Vanessa knew that her father is destined to be the creator of time travel (known as Professor Time) due to an inator that he previously built to travel back in time to erase the Pistachions from existence.
Appearance[]
Vanessa Doofenshmirtz is a 16-year-old girl with pale skin, deep blue eyes, and long, smooth dark-chocolate brown hair. She wears all black, with a black buttoned suit shirt, stretchy silk pants, and big black boots. The only thing she wears that isn't black is pink lipstick.
Personality[]
| “ | Okay, Dad, maybe I'm a little evil. | „ |
| ~ Vanessa admitting that she may be a little villainous for helping her father escape arrest, in spite of having no intention of doing evil. |
Despite her father's reputation as an evil scientist, Vanessa has no intention to do evil and generally acts like a sarcastic, but normal teenager caring about her own reputation, especially when her clothing gets accidentally switched with Candace's clothing. Vanessa has always be found with the "goth" or "punk rock" crowd, as seen in her childhood photos and her friends' appearance.
Her desire to have a car of her own is quite clear. She tries to prove she’s responsible enough to own her own car by trying to get a rare element that her father needs in the Superduper Mega Superstore, though this was foiled by Perry, much to Vanessa's dismay. Her desire is also evident when Doofenshmirtz told her he'd brought her a gift, and she exclaimed "A car?" with excitement. She was disappointed when she found out it was just a doll that she had wanted when she was seven, but later on, she starts to appreciate it, finally seeing how much her father cares for her in spite of his reputation as a villain.
Although Vanessa tried to deny it when being around, she admitted that she might somewhat villainous, as evidenced in "Phineas and Ferb Summer Belongs to You!", as she stolen a motor-scooter and lied to Phineas and the gang that she rented it, pointed a hairdryer at Major Monogram by pretending it was a gun, and even hijacked Agent P's hover car to help herself and her father escape. She also aided in several of her father's plans, though she was condemnatory and disapproving in doing so; for example in "Tree to Get Ready", she used one of her father's-inators to brainwash several pigeons into following her father's orders. In "Minor Monogram", Vanessa was impressed that her father implanted two large propellers to dislodge the Tri-State Area from the Earth and raise it up to the sky (in a short period of time), finding it to be cool. She was even surprised to see that her father had started up azombie apocalypse with his Repulse-inator, though she later learns that he had no intention of doing so. She also admires her new First Daughter suite inside the newly-built Tri-Governor's Mansion after her father is successfully elected Tri-Governor.
Relationships[]
Family[]
- Heinz Doofenshmirtz - Vanessa is the daughter of Heinz and is under shared custody of him and Charlene. At first, Vanessa is often annoyed with Heinz as she sees him as substandard, mostly on account of his elaborate evil schemes but also because of the goofy things he does to embarrass her in front of her friends. She often tries to expose his evil schemes to her mother, only for her efforts to fall flat as they would either disappear or turn out to be harmless in Charlene's eyes. However, that all started to change when Heinz admits that he spent 9 years finding a doll that she wanted when she was 7. Although she didn't care for the doll itself, Vanessa still found herself deeply appreciating the sentiment that this doll represented and kept it in her room, even going as far as to yank it out of a little girl's hands to keep it for herself. From that day on, Vanessa admits from time to time that she is at least a little evil herself, and although she doesn't really see the appeal of the dark side, she knows it makes her father happy and is just glad to finally agree with him on something. In "The Last Day of Summer", Vanessa convinced Doofenshmirtz that he wasn't really evil, helping him to discover that he didn't have any true deep-rooted passion for villainy and instead just did this out of obligation to his tragic past. This helped Doofenshmirtz convert to heroism, which Vanessa gladly helped him with. However, for some unknown reason, Doof ultimately relapsed to evil by the next summer as seen in "Summer Block Buster", to which Vanessa was rather indifferent to. Speaking of obligation to his tragic past, Heinz breaks the cycle of abuse that his parents inflicted on him as a child and treats Vanessa with the utmost of respect, giving her the life of love and happiness that he never had. It's unknown if Vanessa truly understands or appreciates how her father shields her from enduring intergenerational trauma, but at least one this is certain, as mentioned in "Brain Drain", she still thinks her dad is cool.
- Charlene Doofenshmirtz - Vanessa is the daughter of Charlene, being in shared custody of her and Heinz. When living with her mom, Vanessa's life is a lot more boring and uneventful, though Vanessa appreciates this as she gets to relax more and live the life of a normal teenage girl. Charlene doesn't believe Vanessa when she says that Heinz is "evil", just brushing off her claims as her being "a bit dramatic". Vanessa has made several attempts to bust Heinz for his evil schemes to Charlene, only for his evil inventions to either disappear or turn out to be completely harmless before she arrives. Vanessa considered going to live with Charlene full-time since she listens to her better than her father does.
- Norm - Vanessa is the "sister" of Norm, due to Norm being a robot that was built by her biological father. Although their interactions together are brief, Vanessa is shown to be kind and friendly to Norm, treating him like an actual member of the family. She even gave Norm some headphones to listen to so that he could drown out his depression, and Norm thanked her for that.
Friends[]
- Lacy - Vanessa is best friends with Lacy, with Lacy initially serving as the counterpart of Stacy in her and Candace's respective friendships. Lacy has known Vanessa for at least 6 years, as she was seen in an old picture at Vanessa's 10th birthday. Their friendship has remained strong as she also attended her 16th birthday party in the same episode. They are also classmates, as seen in "Doof 101", where they both went to Danville High School together and sat next to each other in class, keeping their friendship going strong throughout the school year.
- Candace Flynn - Vanessa became friends with Candace over the course of the series. Originally strangers who only had brief interactions, Candace and Vanessa would really get to know each other in the special, "Summer Belongs to You", when Vanessa landed on the airplane going around the world, getting caught up in the adventure with Candace. They grew closer as friends in "The Doonkleberry Imperative", when Vanessa met up with Candace at the library and recognized her from their trip around the world. She invited Candace over to her house to help her find a book on The Scientific Method and although they couldn't find it, they did have a nice conversation where Vanessa learned about Candace's struggles with a mysterious force taking away her brothers' inventions. Vanessa heard more of Candace's gripes with this mysterious force inCandace Against the Universe and tried to give her some therapy to convince her to stop worrying about her brothers but this didn't work as they were soon abducted by aliens and separated when Candace launched Vanessa out of the ship with en escape pod, leaving herself behind. Their friendship carried over into the fall, as seen in "Drusselsteinoween", where they went to the Halloween party together and also into the next summer, as seen in "No Slumber Party", where Vanessa came to Candace's house for a sleepover.
- Stacy Hirano - Vanessa is casual friends with Stacy, only really knowing her through their mutual friend Candace Flynn and Vanessa's father Heinz.
- Perry the Platypus - Vanessa is casual friends with Perry the Platypus, really only knowing him as the her dad's nemesis. However, Perry has helped Vanessa out a few times, leading her to like him. Such times include Perry destroying Vanessa's embarrassing childish birthday decorations to turn them all creepy and gothic, concealing her relationship with Monty from others, and convincing her to come clean to her father about working at O.W.C.A.'s internship.
Love Interests[]
- Johnny - Vanessa dated Johnny for a short time, before she dumped him in "Minor Monogram", when he started putting video games before her. In "Doof 101", Vanessa stated that she and Johnny her hardly even going out in the first place. However, she still hoped to be friends with him so he could know there are no hard feelings.
- Monty Monogram - Vanessa started dating Monty in "Minor Monogram", turning them into star-crossed lovers. This was a huge issue since their respective fathers were archenemies respectively. However, they still made their relationship work as seen in "Sipping With the Enem'", when they went on their first date at Steam Noir but certainly not their last date. Vanessa's relationship with Monty brings out the good in her, when it comes to her indifference toward ethics. As much of an "evil-doer" she is, Vanessa is also a do-gooder, who sides with the path of righteousness whenever the time calls for it and when she's with Monty, she kind of goes along with his missions. They kind of got separated after the summer since they didn't go to school together, only really seeing each other at that Halloween party during "Drusselsteinoween". However, in the next summer, they met up again on a cruise ship in "Aurora Perry-alis" and kept their relationship going once again. Their relationship would ultimately end at some point, as seen by how Vanessa started dating Ferb in "Act Your Age".
- Ferb Fletcher - Vanessa and Ferb are casual acquaintances-turn friends-turn lovers. Ferb first fell in love with Vanessa in "I Scream, You Scream", when he met with her at Blueprint Heaven. They grew closer as friends in "Vanessasary Roughness", when Ferb helped Vanessa get some Pizzazzium Infinionite and also later in "Summer Belongs to You", when they went on a little date in Paris, France. Ultimately, the two would become an official couple in the future, as seen in "Act Your Age", where they drove off in a car together.
Enemies[]
- Rodrigo: Upon meeting Rodrigo after breaking up with Johnny, she took an interest in Rodrigo after he tells her that she is unique. But it wasn't until Rodrigo betrayed her father by taking over the latter's scheme in using two giant propellers to hold the Tri-State Area in the air. Upon Rodrigo announcing his true intent to destroy the Tri-State and offering Vanessa a team-up by offering her a tattoo (in which her father denied), Vanessa angrily refuses and drops whatever thoughts she had for Rodrigo by calling him a dweeb, finding him to be more crazier than her father. She doesn't even care when Monty arrives in and defeats Rodrigo, saying that she's done dating bad boys.
- Biker: Vanessa is indifferent towards the Biker for trying to flirt with her, she doesn't even lift a finger when her father uses his Away-inator to zap the Biker into another dimension.
Trivia[]
- In the episode "Skiddley Whiffers", Vanessa is allergic to bees, just like her father.
- Vanessa is shown to be terrible in making cupcakes, as shown in the song "Lies" in the episode "Let's Bounce", where her father finds the smell of her cupcakes to be horrible, but pretends to eat one in order to spare her feelings.
- Ferb, who serves as one of the protagonists of the series, happens to hold on crush on Vanessa, and would often try to help out; at one time, he even helped her find a rare substance for her father to buy so that she could get a car, thought this was foiled by Perry. Despite being grateful, Vanessa is unaware of Ferb's true feelings for her. However, in the episode "Act Your Age" (which takes 10 years after the series), Vanessa is shown to have a relationship with Ferb and has her own car.
- She once dated a punk boy named Johnny, but later broke up with him in "Minor Monogram" after hearing that he thinks that a video game is more important than their relationship. In the same episode, she started to develop feelings for an exchange student namedRodrigo, who holds the same feelings for her while being mentored by Doofenshmirtz. However, it wasn’t until Rodrigo betrayed Doofenshmirtz in an attempt to destroy the Tri-State Area for his own selfish pursuit of taking over the world. This had left Vanessa furious at Rodrigo for betraying her father and led her to dating Monty Monogram, the same boy who defeated Rodrigo in his tracks and helped her father in stoppingRodney from sending the Earth into a new Ice Age. At some point in the future, Vanessa and Monty broke up, as she’s seen dating Ferb in the future.
- In the 2011 TV filmPhineas and Ferb The Movie: Across the 2nd Dimension, Vanessa and heralternate reality counterpart make a cameo appearance in deleted scenes, as shown when the movie was released on DVD. Vanessa's alternate counterpart would later return in the 2014 episode sequel "Tales from the Resistance: Back to the 2nd Dimension", where she turns out to be very evil and loyal to herevil family.
