Phineas Mason, better known as theTinkerer, is a major character in the 2008 video gameSpider-Man: Web of Shadows.

He is a mad scientist who helps S.H.I.E.L.D. construct a detonation device to kill all the symbiotes without killing their hosts.

He was voiced by William Utay.

Biography[]

He first appears in his jail cell,Spider-Man tells him he is breaking him out, Tinkerer is surprised, Spider-Man breaks him out, but then Black Widow, S.H.I.E.L.D agents, Moon Knight,Vulture,Kingpin and his goons show up. Tinkerer tells them it was Spider-Man's idea after Black Widow reluctantly agrees to go along with Spider-Man's plan. Black Widow orders the agents to take Spider-Man and Tinkerer to the command center at Stark Tower, where Spider-Man and Tinkerer appear inside an S.H.I.E.L.D. hovercraft.Tinkerer tells Spider-Man that it seems the calvary has arrived; after S.H.I.E.L.D. destroys a bridge, Tinkerer tells Spider-Man that perhaps it could stop the symbiotes from spreading. Tinkerer then gets started on working on a device, but then he claims he needs items that are in Kingpin's possession, causing Black Widow to tell Spider-Man to inform Kingpin.

After Kingpin agrees, Tinkerer gets dropped off at Fisk Tower, and he is. Then, inside the building, Tinkerer explains his plan to Spider-Man, Black Widow, Kingpin and Vulture; he explains that the symbiotes are vulnerable to sound, and he plans to make a device that generates a self-perpetuating sonic wave of 59 thousand hertz by converting the light from a plasma detonation into a thermal wave, Widow agrees and that they will use Stark Tower, but then Tinkerer mentions that it will only work on the Trask Building, it will kill all the symbiotes without killing their hosts. To complete the project, Tinkerer requires the following: full access to the facilities here at Fisk Industries, 25 million dollars in cash, full pardon, a castle in Italy and a woman from Tinkerer's favourite tool calendar waiting by the pool. Kingpin agrees to let Tinkerer have full access to his laboratories, and the castle and the girl will be Tinkerer's, Branford's pardon, and the money erupted by Black Widow. Black Widow reluctantly agrees to that, but then she mumbles in Russian while leaving, Spider-Man, Vulture, Kingpin, and Tinkerer give her a gaze. After the detention device is ready, S.H.I.E.L.D. plants it on top of the Trask Building. After Symbiote Vulture makes his threat, Tinkerer then tells Black Widow that they need that building, intact, Tinkerer is last seen in the bad ending or anti-villain ending on top of Fisk Tower, Kingpin tells Tinkerer that he is ready for something.
