| “ | Sir, a profile on Boone Carver, AKA Shrike. Shuffled around a number of youth crisis care centres they were all shut down due to budgetary constraints. Patrolled from Blackgate two weeks ago, moved in with another youth home rejectee. Wayward youth aside, Shrike only became "Shrike" after Blackgate radicalized him. | „ |
| ~ Alfred Pennyworth on Shrike. |
Boone Carver, better known asShrike, is a high ranking member of theRats, their top assassin and a supporting antagonist inBatman: Arkham Shadow.
He is voiced by Rick Cortez.
Biography[]
Past[]
Boone Carver was always a troubled youth, getting into fights and causing mayhem until he was placed into multiple hostels owned by Dr. Leslie Thompkins. However, these were shut down as a city cost cutting measure; leaving Carver isolated and angry. He moved into the Beacon Hotel with another former resident of the Youth Crisis Centers,Dick Grayson, who was like a little brother to him since before Blackgate and who looked up to Shrike as a big brother.
Pre-Arkham Shadow[]
After being sent to Blackgate for unknown reasons, Boone radicalised after hearing propaganda from theRat King about modern society. Upon release, Boone Carver reinvented himself as a ruthless member of the Rats. Taking a nickname after a Passerine subspecies, known for impaling other birds on plant spikes, Shrike quickly rises the ranks to become the Rats' top assassin and effectively the Rat King's lieutenant.
Batman: Arkham Shadow[]
Three years into the Batman's protection of Gotham and around seven months after theJoker's Christmas Eve rampage, the Rats launch a devastating attack on Independence Day against the Bowery. Although seemingly just an ordinary riot, this is to disguise Shrike's assassination attempt against Commissioner Gordon at the so-called "Pigsty." Batman stops the Rat Riot after taking down an armed group who took five GCPD Officers hostage, Shrike flees but ends up splashing himself with the fluid used to lubricate his sniper rifle. By tracking Shrike back to his apartment using the fluid, Batman uncovers a Rat King propaganda film being made and tracks Shrike to a nearby rooftop. Although Shrike and eight armed men are ready when Batman arrives, all are easily defeated so Shrike retreats into the sewers and then to the Monarch Theatre to operate his film. Tracked and confronted by Batman, Shrike escapes out a back entrance and makes his way to Solomon Wayne Courthouse as part of their ultimate move.
Storming in, the Rats take Harvey Dent hostage in a backroom with plans to kill him as an example. Despite holding Dent at gunpoint, Shrike watches his guards get defeated so retreats to the balcony of the Courthouses where he douses himself and Harvey in gasoline. Even surrounded by police and news helicopters and with nowhere to run, Shrike demands Dent's immolation be broadcast live. Before he can light himself and Dent though, Batman ambushes him from above and interrogates Shrike who refuses all questions and simply claims "salvation" awaits in Blackgate. Upon learning that Batman intends to kill him and not send him to Blackgate, and determined not to be taken alive, Shrike sets himself on fire before jumping off the balcony and falling to his death.
Legacy[]
In the aftermath, the GCPD and media were unsure of whether Batman had murdered Shrike or not. Shrike would not live to discover that the Rat King was none other than an alternate personality of the man he tried to kill; Harvey Dent.
Shrike later appeared in a hallucination experienced by Batman after the latter was exposed to Dr. Jonathan Crane's Project Umbra gas. In the vision, Shrike is killed and eaten by theShadow Batman.
Although Shrike was dead, he would ultimately be vindicated and justly avenged. After Boone Carver's death and the dissolution of the Rats, Gotham City finally woke up to the systemic abuse at the highest seats of government; arresting the likes ofLyle Bolton and his thugs and purging ultimately purging Gotham of its corruption.
Personality[]
| “ | Soon you will face the wrath of our King! A vigilante who keeps the status quo is no hero. You're a tool of oppression, a cop with a cape! You take orders from fascists, who ignore our screams until we're clawing at their doors! | „ |
| ~ Shrike after his guards were defeated. |
Like the rest of the Rats, Shrike has an extremely anti-government and anti-capitalist sentiment; having become extremely jaded with the state of society to the point of committing terrorist acts to bring down "the man." Ultimately a victim of a deeply corrupted city that cares not for its poor, Boone Carver has cultivated a deep-seated hatred towards authority, though he demonstrates compassion towards others trapped in the system. As with the rest of the Rats, Boone hates the Batman due to seeing his attempts to restore order as repressing their "righteous" ways and the people of Gotham by extension. Although a terrorist and a murderer like the rest of the Rats, Shrike is ultimately a man driven to evil by circumstances and a city that existed solely to further the pursuit of crime.
Skills and Abilities[]
- Endurance: Despite his appearance, Shrike can take a beating as several punches and a headbutt from Batman did not even seem to wind him.
- Filmmaking: Shrike is a skilled filmmaker as he and Dick Grayson were able to singlehandedly create a Rat King propaganda film using only a dark room.
- Agility: As noted by a Rat outside his apartment, Shrike made his way to the Monarch Theatre via the rooftops; something that would require great agility to accomplish.
- Marksmanship: Shrike is skilled with a sniper rifle, being able to successful shoot Commissioner Gordon from a considerable distance and only failing to kill due to Batman's intervention.
Arsenal[]
- IWI Tavor TAR-21: As with most snipers in the series, Shrike uses this heavily modified sniper rifle to try and assassinate Commissioner Gordon. He later uses this to hold Harvey Dent hostage but discards it before dousing the two of them in petrol.
- Gasoline Container: Somewhere on his person, Shrike hid a container covering enough gasoline to douse himself and Harvey Dent from head to toe.
- Lighter: Shrike used a lighter to hold Harvey Dent hostage and then used it to kill himself.
