Richter Maddox was a director atBelle Reve Sanitarium who secretly ran an underground fight club between super-powered patients from his hospital in the WB/CW TV seriesSmallville.

He served as the secondary antagonist in the Season 6 episode "Combat".

Biography[]

Maddox secretly ranLive or Die!, an underground fight club that pitted metahumans against each other in brutal death matches. The fights were broadcasted on the Internet for an extremely high fee and fans could choose who wins and who dies. Maddox encountered thePhantom Zone escapeeTitan outside of a bar in Oklahoma.

Titan was immeasurably strong and always sought new opponents to fight, and soon Maddox made the murderous alien the main attraction for his fight club. ThroughOliver Queen,Clark Kent discovered an underground fight circuit being broadcast over the internet. He andChloe Sullivan watched online as the main fighter, Titan, fought a man who could project energy blasts from his hand.

After Titan killed the metahuman, Chloe couldn't track the signal or get past the security firewall and started to investigate. However,Lois Lane, desperate for a story for theMetropolis Inquisitor, discovered Chloe's leads on the fight club and decided to look into it.

Lois went to an abandoned Air Force hangar but encountered one of the club's security guards,Athena. Lois tried to find evidence about the fight club but ended up fighting Athena.

After seeing Lois and Athena spar, Maddox pulled out a gun on her, having been impressed by her skills and took Lois hostage planning to put her in his next fight. Chloe uncovered his identity as the director of Belle Reve while Clark discovered that Titan was not a metahuman, but a prisoner from the Phantom Zone, and sought out Maddox's club in order to defeat him.

Clark later broke into Belle Reve and confronted Maddox as he left for the night in the parking lot. Clark demanded a fight and demonstrates his powers to Maddox to convince him catching a bullet with his bare hand. Maddox agreed to let him fight and took him to the hangar, where Clark's first opponent was Lois.

They were forced to pretend to fight until Clark used his heat vision to destroy the camera equipment. However, Titan's target was indeed Clark and he interrupted Clark and Lois' match to take Clark on. Clark used his heat vision to destroy the visual equipment. Titan spotted him and went to confront Clark. Maddox was upset that Titan was ruining his show and tried to stop him. But Titan responded by simply throwing Maddox across the arena, killing him instantly.
