~ Queen Narissa before transforming herself into a blue dragon.
Queen Narissa, also known asNarissa, is the main antagonist ofDisney's 2007 live-action/animated fantasy comedy filmEnchanted and the overarching antagonist of its 2022 sequelDisenchanted.
She’s the sinister and malicious stepmother ofPrince Edward who served as the tyrannical ruler of Andalasia and an immensely powerful sorceress who develops a deep hatred for Giselle simply for being an obstacle for her to keep her power. AsGiselle and Edward initially falling in love poses a threat to her rule, Narissa opts to banish Giselle to a place where there is no "happily ever after". She is the archenemy of Giselle, Prince Edward and Robert Philip.
Not much is known about Queen Narissa beyond the fact that she was the reigning Queen of Andalasia and doesn’t want her stepson Prince Edward to marryGiselle, because it would cause her to lose her place on the throne and hatches a evil plot to get rid of her by sending to a place where there are no happily ever afters: modern-day New York City.
Narissa achieves this by disguising herself as an old hag and throws Giselle into a magic well, which transports her to the real world. However, when Prince Edward finds out and goes after Giselle, Narissa has her assistant, Nathaniel, go after them, but grows increasingly angry at his failings every time. Eventually, Narissa decides to enter the real world herself and deal with things, since Nathaniel seems incapable of doing so (in truth, Nathaniel was starting to doubt his own purpose and would ultimately redeem himself).
Narissa manages to trick Giselle into eating apoisoned apple (once again taking the form of the same hag) during a ball before revealing herself to the crowds. She mocks Prince Edward and Robert by saying that Giselle will die by midnight without "true love's kiss" - Edward tries to do so, but he fails. However, Robert agrees to do so and Giselle awakens. Narissa grows angry at this and transforms into an enormous blue dragon with the intent of killing everybody else, starting with Giselle. However, Robert stands up to Narissa and protects Giselle from her, leading to Narissa kidnapping Robert instead before smashing out of the Woolworth Building and climbing to the top, intending to drop Robert to his death just to spite Giselle.
Giselle gives chase and after a confrontation, Narissa loses her grip from the building's tip due to Giselle's chipmunk friend Pip standing on one of her horns since he had gained extra weight. After failing to complete her shapeshifting spell, Narissa is consumed in a green glowing fire, and eventually falls to her death into the streets below where she’s destroyed in a shining explosion upon hitting the ground, leaving nothing but her viscous, glowing remains.
Disenchanted[]
Narissa only appears inDisenchanted through archive footage from the first film and is mentioned by Pip as "an evil queen".
Personality[]
Although beautiful and charming, Queen Narissa is depicted as a vain, heartless, tyrannical, cruel, cold-hearted, cunning, narcissistic and power-hungry sorceress who is the absolute definition of pure evil. She is characterized by her ruthless ambition, which drives her to use black magic and deception to maintain her throne and power, as well as her arrogance and refusal to accept defeat. She has developed a deep hatred for Giselle simply for being an obstacle for her to keep her power and intends to kill her by any means necessary so that she can prevent Giselle from becoming the queen of Andalasia, eventually managing to get rid of the girl by sending Giselle to modern-day New York City in the real world, where she will have no "happily ever afters".
Despite Prince Edward being her stepson, there is no indication that she cares for him and likely wants to prevent him from marrying Giselle in order to remain queen of Andalasia to the point Edward would later disown her upon realizing Narissa never cared about him and how vile and purely evil she really was. She has even tried to have Giselle killed and attempted to prevent her from marrying Robert Philip, a divorced lawyer whom she had fallen in love with when she arrived in the real world, only to fail each time before deciding to travel to the real world to finish the job. She is shown to be sadistic, which is shown when she took pleasure in killing Robert by attempting to drop him to his death just to spite Giselle after transforming into a dragon and taking him to the top of the Woolworth Building, thus would've succeeded if Giselle's chipmunk friend Pip hadn't intervened and caused her to fall to her death.
Narissa has an inflated sense of self-importance and demands to be the center of attention, even having hedges trimmed into her likeness. She is also manipulate as she used Nathaniel as a pawn for her own gain by making false promises until Nathaniel eventually realizes the error of his ways and turns against Narissa upon realizing how horrible and sociopathic she really is, revealing that Narissa didn't show any care or respect towards Nathaniel as she only saw him as nothing but a slave to do the dirty work for her.
Narissa's actions are always for the purpose of securing her power and control over the throne and is willing to use extreme violence, such as transforming into a dragon, to achieve her goals. She is shown to be a liar and a skilled actress as she is able to calm crowds and devise elaborate, though ultimately unsuccessful, plans and even exhibits a vindictive and unforgiving nature, seeking to destroy her enemies and their happiness, even resorting to attempts on their lives. Overall, Narissa has no redeeming qualities whatsoever, being nothing more than a black-hearted person who only cares about killing Giselle and remaining queen of Andalasia while never caring for anyone other than herself to the point it eventually leads to her own downfall due to her malice and cruelty.

You know, I've been thinking. If I'm going to remain queen, I'm going to need some sort of story when I go back. Hmm. [...] All right. I'm flexible.

Trivia[]
TheEvil Queen fromSnow White and the Seven Dwarves,Maleficent fromSleeping Beauty,Ursula fromThe Little Mermaid andLady Tremaine fromCinderella served as inspirations for Queen Narissa.
Queen Narissa is the only Disney villain to date to have a stepson.
In her dragon form, despite having wings, they are too small for her which makes her unable to fly. Ironically, if they were larger, then she might have been able to save herself from her literal downfall.
Narissa is considered a dark parallel of Giselle. While Giselle seeks genuine true love and a "happily ever after" based on love and connection with others, Narissa is motivated purely by a selfish desire for power and control as she wants to remain queen and will eliminate anyone who threatens her position, including her stepson's potential bride. Giselle is shown to be innocent, kind-hearted, optimistic, and learns to mature while retaining her loving nature whereas Narissa is manipulative, sadistic, vindictive, vain, and utterly ruthless, with zero redeeming qualities. While Giselle uses her kindness and song to bring people together and solve problems, Narissa uses dark magic, manipulation, and deceit (e.g., using poisoned apples and disguises as an old hag) to trick and harm others. Giselle's journey involves adapting her naive fairy tale views to the complexities of the real world, eventually finding true love with Robert and taking an active role in saving him from Narissa while Narissa, however, refuses to change or adapt since she is trapped by her own evil and megalomania, which ultimately leads to her own downfall. Narissa demonstrates what would happen to Giselle if she was motivated by selfishness and power instead of love and kindness.
