Nurse Wilson is a major antagonist in the 1985 Disney dark fantasy filmReturn to Oz, which serves as an unnofficial sequel to the iconic Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer 1939 filmThe Wizard of Oz.

She is a nurse who works forDr. J.B. Worley during the late 19th century, assisting him in his experiments to employ electricity to "heal" the brains of his patients. In October 1899, Wilson is trusted with the care of Dorothy Gale, whose Aunt Em is concerned for her apparent "delusions" about the Wonderful Land of Oz, leading Worley to ask Wilson to prepare Dorothy for his latest electrotherapy treatment.

She was portrayed by the lateJean Marsh, who also playedPrincess Mombi in the same film andQueen Bavmorda in theWillow franchise.

History[]

Towards the end of the 19th century, Nurse Wilson is working as one of the nurses of the School and Sanitarium of Electric Healing, the local mental asylum of Kansas, working underDr. J.B. Worley's employment. Serving as Worley's right-hand, Wilson assisted him in his many electrotherapy experiments to treat patients with mental problems to prove that electricity could cure them given how Worley deemed the incoming 20th century as the "century of electricity". However, Worley's methods were all unsuccessful, as they left the patient with serious mental damage, leading Wilson to lock them up in the sanitarium cellar.

In October 1899, local Kansas farmer Em Gale brings her niece Dorothy, whom she and her husband Henry believe to be delusional due to her stories about the Wonderful Land of Oz, to the school/sanitarium, where Worley assures Em that Dorothy should be subjected to electrotherapy to cure them from her "unpleasant dreams" so she can sleep properly again. As such, Wilson is asked to take Dorothy to her room while Worley and his other nurses prepare the electrotherapy machine, with Em asking Dorothy to obey the nurse's instructions. During the way to the newest patient's room, Wilson takes away the lunch pail Em prepared for Dorothy, sternly telling her that she wouldn't need it and then leaves her in her room and tells her to take a "nap" until Worley calls her.

Hours later, Wilson arrives wtih a stretcher accompanied by two other nurses and tells Dorothy to lie on the stretcher to be tied up and taken to Dr. Worley. Dorothy wishes to sit up instead, but Wilson reminds her of how Em asked her to obey her orders, leading Dorothy to reluctantly agree and let Wilson's nurses to tie her up so, according to Wilson, she doesn't "fall". They then proceed to take Dorothy to the room where Worley is waiting for her with his electrotherapy machine, putting the machine's headphones on Dorothy's ears to start the treatment, but a thunder knocks the electricity off, leading all the staff, Wilson included, to leave Dorothy alone in the dark as they go to check how to solve the power failure.

Assisted by a mysterious girl who believes in her Oz stories and is aware of the fate all of the school/sanitarium's patients suffer, Dorothy is able to escape, but as Wilson checks everything is fine, she spots Dorothy and the girl trying to escape, so she goes after them. Dorothy and her friend get into the river near the establishment, so Wilson wets her dress in an attempt to reach Dorothy and drag her back to Worley's clinic, but Dorothy resolves to jump into the river and float away from Wilson's reach, leading the nurse to give up and retreat back before the current overpowers her.

At the end of the film, after Dorothy returns to the real world following the defeats of theNome King andPrincess Mombi, Toto, Uncle Henry and Aunt Em track her down with the townsfolk's assistance. As Em informs Dorothy, the night she escaped from the School and Sanitarium of Electrical Healing, a lightning caused a fire that forced all of the establishment's staff and patients to evacuate, with Worley losing his life due to refusing to leave his machines behind. Due to her assistance in Worley's inhumane experiments, however, Wilson is consequently arrested by the local authorities. As she is taken away to be locked up, presumably for life, Wilson looks angry at Dorothy one last time before disappearing into the road.
