The Rocketeer[]

At first, Sinclair is seen as a Hollywood film star but is actually a Nazi secret agent. He hires a mobster named Eddie Valentine to steal a rocket pack from Howard Hughes' factory, but the device is found by a stunt pilot named Cliff Secord which forces Sinclair to send Valentine and his mobsters to reclaim it.

Sinclair hears Cliff talking to his girlfriend Jenny Blake about the rocket pack and he invites her to dinner. After Cliff uses the rocket pack and adopts the title of 'Rocketeer', Sinclair sends his hulking henchmanLothar to bring the rocket pack to him.

Meanwhile, Cliff is confronted by mobsters and a stray bullet punctured the rocket pack's fuel tank, though he manages to patch this with chewing gum. Sinclair later kidnaps Jenny and attempts to seduce her at his villa, but she knocks him out after learning that he is a spy. However, Sinclair recaptures her and tells Cliff that he will let her go in exchange for the rocket pack.

Cliff meets with Sinclair, Lothar and Eddie's gang before revealing to the group that Sinclair is a Nazi spy. Hearing this, Eddie and the other mobsters turn on him but Sinclair summons a large group of hidden SA German commandos to hold them at gunpoint. Sinclair and Lothar take Jenny aboard a zeppelin airship and escape, but Cliff uses the rocket pack to fly after them.

On board the craft, Cliff and Sinclair fight and Jenny accidentally sets the cabin on fire with a flare gun, prompting Sinclair to take the rocket pack from Cliff in order to save himself. However, Cliff manages to remove the patch of chewing gum from the rocket pack which causes it to leak fuel, unnoticed by Sinclair as he dons the rocket pack and attempts to make his escape from the zeppelin. The leaking fuel then ignites from the rocket pack's exhaust flames causing it to malfunction and spiral out of control. A screaming Sinclair is then sent hurtling with the faulty rocket pack into the last four letters of the 'Hollywoodland' sign, exploding and killing him on impact.

As a Nazis spy, saboteur, and fascist, Neville Sinclair is a loyal follower of Adolf Hitler's Nazis Regime. Neville Sinclair is the man who desperately wants to get the rocket. He hired Eddie Valentine and his gang to steal it and gives orders to Lothar to find it. He is a utterly ruthless, cruel, and sadistic Nazi, and he is working to get the rocket to his superiors to use in their plans for world domination by any means necessary.

Neville Sinclair's ruthlessness, darker, and more murderous traits is shown when he later shoots a Gestapo agent - his erstwhile ally if not superior - when the latter, furious complained over how badly their mission has gone awry, when he delivers one insult too many.

Despite this, Neville Sinclair is a dirty coward, as he always lets others do most of the dirty work and fighting for him, only getting physical himself when fighting Cliff Secord in the climax. An example of this is during the battle at Griffith Observatory, where he ultimately leaves his fellow Nazis commandos to die. And the moment he has the jetpack, he abandons the zeppelin and his enemies, in order to escape, only to die seconds later, screaming in pain and agony once he hits the ground.

Trivia[]

The Rocketeer emphasizes Neville’s Errol Flynn influence by showing him as the swashbuckling hero Sir Reginald on the set of the movieThe Laughing Bandit, a nod to Flynn’s close association with Robin Hood.
Flynn himself was also accused of being a Nazi spy in Charles Hingham’s 1980 biographyErrol Flynn: The Untold Story, though numerous other biographers and family members of Flynn’s have since refuted this portrayal of him.
The Rocketeer also rewrites the history of the Hollywoodland sign through Neville Sinclair's demise, with Neville Sinclair crashing into the sign with the rocket pack and destroying the "land" section of it.
