| “ | Of course, I know about bad luck… that's one of the lessons that this city teaches us all, eventually. | „ |
| ~ Mr. Freeze in Volume 1 ofGotham Central. |
| “ | Yes. Hell. As described by Dante, with its multiple rings. Each one is guarded by a devil. And at the bottom of the universe… is a lake of ice. I am Freeze. I was chosen to guard this realm. All that enters here turns cold, becomes brittle… and breaks. | „ |
| ~ Mr. Freeze. |
| “ | You love the cold, Victor. Even if you did bring her back, you'd end up destroying her. Because you love an idea, Victor. An obsession. And thatI do understand. | „ |
| ~Batman to Mr. Freeze. |
Dr. Victor Bernard Fries, better known asMr. Freeze, is a major antagonist in theDC Universe, specifically serving as a major antagonist in theBatman franchise.
He is typically depicted as a dangerous enemy ofBatman. Although originally a joke villain who used cold themed gimmicks, Mr. Freeze would be reinterpreted into a former cryogenics scientist who became a supervillain upon being involved in an accident that mutated him, making him unable to survive in warm environments without the use of a cryogenic suit. Unlike most Batman villains, Mr. Freeze is typically portrayed as a sympathetic anti-villainous character, as, in most versions, his motivation for his crimes is to save his dying wifeNora Fries.
Biography[]
Pre-Crisis[]
When he debuted in 1959, Victor Fries was a renegade scientist-turned-criminal known as Mr. Zero, a scientist whose ice gun backfired, spilling a freezing solution over him. It meant he could now only survive in sub-zero temperatures. As Mr. Zero, Victor begins a series of robberies using a gun capable of projecting both cold and heat.
Intended as a one-off villain, he returned in the late 1960s bearing his current moniker, Mr. Freeze.Over the years, Mr. Freeze was a minor Batman rogue, making a few guest appearances until the 1980s, which featured a number of costume changes.
Post-Crisis[]
It wasn't until afterCrisis on Infinite Earths and thanks in part toBatman: The Animated Series, that Victor Fries was given his origin story. The tragic tale helped elevate him to the status of one of Batman's greatest foes. In this version, Victor Fries developed an interest in cryogenic preservation at an early age, which he would practice himself by freezing animals. Horrified by their son's "hobby", his parents sent him to a strict reform school, where he was miserable and frequently bullied. Fries' experiences at school, coupled with his parents' neglect of him during this period, caused him to develop a detachment from humanity.
In college, Fries met his future wife,Nora, with whom he experienced true happiness for the first time in his life. Some time after the first appearance of Batman, Nora contracted a fatal disease of which there was no known cure. Desperate to save his wife, Fries used his knowledge in cryogenics to create a stasis pod, within which Nora was placed in suspended animation until he was able to discover a cure for her illness. However, an explosion in Fries' lab exposed him to various chemicals used in his experiments, resulting in him being unable to survive outside of sub-zero temperatures. Creating a cryogenic suit to survive in and a freeze gun, Victor adopted the name Mr. Freeze and turned to a life of crime in order to continue funding his research to save Nora, inevitably putting him into conflict with Batman.
The New 52[]

Victor and Nora
In the Post-Flashpoint timeline, Mr. Freezer story was revised again. In this version, Victor Fries watched his father walk out on his family when he was young, abandoning both his mother and himself in Gotham City. Later relocating to Lowell, Nebraska, Victor's mother slowly lost her grip on reality, ending up sick and wheelchair-bound. While still a boy, Victor pushed her out onto a frozen lake and shoved her wheelchair into a hole in the ice. When his mother tried to climb out, Victor pushed her under the water again, preferring her to be frozen and "cured" of all her ills, than to go on suffering. She would not be discovered until the following spring. In adulthood, Victor carried with him his obsession for cold. In the New 52 continuity, Nora was never his wife at all, but the first woman to undergo cryogenic stasis,Nora Fields.
He became a doctor in the field of cryogenics at Wayne Tower Laboratories. Victor adored his "wife" Nora, and when she fell ill with cancer, he had her frozen. When it was discovered he was running experiments on his frozen wife, Fries was fired. Victor grew violent, and in a scuffle, he was doused in experimental chemicals that made it impossible for his body to survive outside the temperature of absolute zero. Required to wear a refrigerated suit, Victor developed flash-freezing weaponry and became the aupervillai Mr. Freeze. He later augmented his physiology so as not to depend on his exosuit. Aided byLex Luthor, Victor restored Nora to life and the couple became fugitives. However, Luthor's serum corrupted Nora's mind, and she lashed out at Victor causing him to be frozen in stasis in order to survive. With their roles reversed, the road was paved for the criminal career of Mrs. Freeze.

Mr. Freeze does not appear in the videogameBatman: Arkham Asylum. One of theRiddler's riddles revolves around him.
He does have a entry in the character bios. His profile states:
Victor Fries was a brilliant cryogenicist whose beloved wife Nora was stricken with a fatal degenerative disease. He placed her in suspended animation while obsessively searching for a way to cure her, but the corporation that funded his research – and Nora`s life – pulled the plug, triggering an accident that transformed Fries` body into a cold-blooded form that must always be kept below zero; at normal room temperature he will die. Wielding a number of freezing weapons, he wears protective armor in his quest to somehow bring back his lovely wife and avenge her fate – which he partly holds the Batman responsible for.
Lego Batman 3[]

Trivia[]
- Mr. Freeze is one of the few Batman villains whose true goal is not to kill Batman or dominate the world, his primary goal is to save his wife.
- In his very first appearances, Mr. Freeze went by the name of Mr. Zero, and did not yet have such pale skin. He was first referred to as Mr. Freeze in the 1960's 'Batman' TV series. In the Pre-Crisis worlds, this was confirmed to be the same character under a different name, but since the Crisis On Infinite Earths, it seems Freeze never used that name and always had his current appearance once transformed. The name and look were brought back for the retro-themed animated series,Batman : The Brave And The Bold.
- Mr. Freeze's current prevailing origin was first presented onBatman: The Animated Series.
