Melvin is the main antagonist ofDisney's 46th full-length animated feature filmChicken Little.
He is a furry three-eyed red alien, the leader of hisspecies, the husband ofTina, and the father ofKirby. He started a full-scale invasion on Oakey Oaks with their home planet's armada to retrieve his son after the latter suddenly went missing from his parents. He is also the former arch-nemesis ofAce "Chicken Little" Cluck, as he not only thought that the former kidnapped Kirby but was also the one indirectly responsible for the titular main protagonist's paranoia about their species via a loose panel from his ship, which made Chicken Little himself believe that the "sky is falling" in the first place, resulting in his public humiliation.
He was voiced by the lateFred Willard, who also voicedSwindle inTransformers: Animated and theBoogey Man inThe Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy.
In his true form, he has red fur which mostly covers up his oval-shaped body, except for his limbs, which instead have maroon patches that balance out the red ones. Like the rest of his species, he has red eyes which have dark red pupils. At one point, he can be seen wearing aMickey Mouse watch on his left arm.
Personality[]
As the leader of the aliens, Melvin is a hard worker, as he commands his species to gather as much acorns as they can in different place while they're roaming at outer space. When he thinks that things go south for them, he'll go all berserk by targeting anyone who comes across their paths, showcasing that he can have a volatile temper of his own, even willing to commit mass murder when angered enough.
However, he's not without his redeeming qualities, as the alien invasion he started in Oakey Oaks was to retrieve his and Tina's son Kirby back, thinking that their child was supposedly kidnapped. In addition to that, he's capable of sparing anyone even those who have provoked his species, as shown when they restored everything in the town back to normal.
Biography[]
Each year, during visits to their in-laws from an another planet, Melvin and Tina stop at Oakey Oaks to collect acorns, as they look at all the planets in the solar system and acorns can only be found on planet Earth. They also unknowingly caused Chicken Little to become the town's laughing stock when a panel from their ship falls out and hits him on the head, as the panel kept falling off every year they come to Earth, and they are unable to get it fixed, as Melvin threw away the receipt to fix and/or return the lose panel. Due to the panel hitting Chicken Little on the head, this lead him to mistakenly believe that it is a piece of the sky. This incident triggers panic in Oakey Oaks and results in Chicken Little being accused of insanity and being ridicule by the townsfolk ever since, when he is unable to provide the evidence.
A year later, the same panel hit Chicken Little on the head, prompting him to gather his friendsAbby Mallard,Runt, andFish to investigate. When Fish accidentally gets taken aboard the aliens' ship, they rush to rescue him. When they reunite, Runt discovers a map in which they believe that depicts choosing Earth as a target for an invasion.
While fleeing the ship to warn the town, they accidentally run into Melvin and Tina, who believe Chicken Little and his friends kidnapped their son Kirby, when they find that he is missing. The two aliens chased Chicken Little and his friends out of their spaceship and into a cornfield, while Kirby follows them as he wanders away from the ship. When Chicken Little tries to warn everyone about the aliens, Melvin and Tina headed back for their ship and escape, causing everyone to believe that Chicken Little is back to his delusional self again and making Chicken Little's embarrassed fatherBuck Cluck refuse to believe him about the alien spaceship, even when Chicken Little tries desperately in detailing the spaceship and when his friends vouch for his claims. However, Melvin and Tina accidentally left Kirby behind on Earth, who then follows Chicken Little home, as he is the only Earthling he recognized.
Still believing Chicken Little and his friends kidnapped Kirby, Melvin and Tina launch a full-scale invasion with their planet's armada to retrieve him, causing chaos in Oakey Oaks, and teleporting people and objects into a chamber aboard the UFO, keeping the townsfolk imprisoned aboard the UFO. To end the invasion and save their town, Chicken Little and Buck devise a plan to get to the top of the Town Hall where the ship is and return Kirby to his parents. However, Chicken Little, Buck, and Kirby were abducted by Melvin and are imprisoned in the spaceship. Melvin suddenly uses his darkSatan-like voice to them by furiously berating at both of them for "kidnapping" his son. Buck tries to tell Melvin that his son did not take their child and that he was the one who abandoned him and that it's bad parenting. But Melvin, however, doesn't believe them and yells "SILENCE", really loud and makes them let go of Kirby while pointing guns at Chicken Little and Buck to kill them for breaking intergalactic law 90210.
However, Kirby tries to communicate with him by saying Chicken Little and Buck Cluck were telling the truth by admitting they were going to bring him back to him while Tina convinces him by agreeing with the Clucks and asks him to remove his darker voice as the duo removes their alien uniforms, revealing their true identities specifically, when Melvin removes his dark voice also shows as well he friendly greet the Clucks and asked of them if they want to try the big voice. Later, the aliens revert the town back to normal where Melvin and Tina redeem themselves and apologized for the whole misunderstanding and for their extreme actions as if they destroyed the Earth, where else would they get their acorns. Melvin then checks his watch and says one last goodbye to Chicken Little and Buck and the family returns back to their UFO and travels back to space.

Looked on all the other planets and you only find them right here on Earth. Tina: Just as it says here on your primitive graphic display. Melvin: That caught our eyes.

Melvin is the first Disney Animated Canon main antagonist to come from a CGI film; not countingKron, as he was designed as a CGI/live-action film character. All of his predecessors, except for Kron, were from traditionally animated films. He was followed byDOR-15 fromMeet the Robinsons.
He is also the first Disney CGI villain to not be distinguished by Pixar.
Melvin has a Mickey Mouse watch with three eyes.
Melvin serves as a dark reflection to Buck Cluck, as both are fathers who have parental issues towards their respective sons. However, while Buck was a misguided parent who was unintentionally neglectful towards Chicken Little, and often feels ashamed of his supposed antics, Melvin was more instinctive for Kirby, yet he can also go too far with it, to the point where he even took extreme measures to find him when he went missing. Also, while Buck makes up with Chicken Little and reconciles with him during the climax, Melvin and Kirby had an indirect feud that's rooted from the invasion (although, such tension has died down in the end, as well). Melvin serves as an example of what Buck would have become if he didn’t reconsider his parental issues towards his son Chicken Little.
In the end credits, he was also listed as "Alien Dad".
Incidentally, the late Fred Willard would later be involved in Pixar'sWALL-E, which was the studio's first overall science fiction film.
