Magog (real nameDavid Sikela) is a supporting character in theDC Comics universe. He was introduced in theKingdom Come storyline, which is set in a dystopian future of the DC Universe set in Earth-22.

He's a extremist vigilante who kills with no regret and doesn't even care of the collateral damage he causes. In Kingdom Come, his reckless behavior partly leads to a catastrophic conflict that threatens the entire world. He is often depicted wearing armor with a glowing spear. After Kingdom Come, Magog was integrated into the main DC Universe continuity as a soldier namedDavid Reid.

History[]

Kingdom Come[]

Magog is introduced as a brutal anti-hero who kills criminals instead of capturing them. He gains fame when he killsthe Joker with his spear, which shocks the superhero community.

After Superman returns from his self-imposed exile, he finds the world overrun by violent heroes like Magog, who act more like vigilantes than protectors. The Kryptonian strongly disapproves Magog's lethal methods and tries to stop this new wave of brutality.

Magog's style and attitude contribute to escalating violence between heroes and villains, leading to chaos and widespread destruction. In a climactic and tragic moment, Magog fires a nuclear missile that inadvertently causes a massive explosion in Kansas, killing millions and devastating the area. This catastrophe forces Superman and his allies to intervene more decisively.

Modern Age[]

In this continuity, Magog was originally David Reid, a U.S. Marine and descendant ofFranklin D. Roosevelt. He's introduced as a patriotic, grounded soldier with a sense of duty. After being exposed to a mysterious alien artifact during a mission in the Middle East, David gains superhuman strength, durability, and the ability to fire energy blasts through a staff-like weapon embedded in his arm. The Justice Society of America recruits him, seeing his potential and leadership qualities. David was an honorable man at first, but becomes increasingly frustrated with the JSA's idealistic and diplomatic approach, since he believes in a more direct, militaristic method.

A god-like being namedGog appears on Earth, claiming to bring peace. He heals people, grants miracles, and wins over many heroes, including David. Gog reshapes David into Magog, granting him a golden armored body, a horned helmet, and enhanced powers. As Magog, David becomes more aggressive and begins to embrace Gog's authoritarian "peace through power" philosophy. The JSA eventually realizes Gog is not a benevolent god, but a tyrant. They confront and defeat him, cutting his connection to Magog and restoring David's free will.

Magog eventually leaves the JSA, disillusioned and at odds with the their ideals and believing they are too passive to make real change. Magog then becomes a rogue vigilante, working outside the law to fight threats the JSA won't confront, and his methods grow even more brutal. Fearing that Magog's future would bring about the darkKingdom Come timeline,Maxwell Lord, uses psychic manipulation to force David kill himself. However, Magog is tricked into attacking Captain Atom before dying. As he dies, he triggers an explosion, setting off major events in theGeneration Lost andBrightest Day storylines.

The New 52[]

WhenDarkseid'sParademon army invaded Earth, young David Reid lost his parents in the chaos. Although the Justice League drove Darkseid back to Apokolips, Reid held nothing but hatred in his heart for super-heroes who had failed to save his family. Years later, he was living on the street when the sorceressCirce, selected him as test subject for her "Fusion Stone". It granted Reid superhuman powers, but, as Circe willed, he forgot his past for a time. Armed with a powerful energy lance, Reid fought and defeated theAtomic Skull andMajor Disaster. He then faced Superman and Wonder Woman and, as his memories returned, revealed himself as Magog. He and Circe did their best to defeat the Man of Steel and Wonder Woman, but failed. Superman showed Magog what it meant to be a true superhero; unfortunately, the villain was too set in his ways to heed the Man of Steel's lesson.

Post-Rebirth, Reid's campaign against false gods again brought him into conflict with Superman, but he also branched out to target his cousin Supergirl, both singly and as part of theEmerald Empress' new Fatal Five along withSelena,Brainiac 8, andSolomon Grundy.

Infinite Frontier[]

InInfinite Frontier, the Kingdom Come version of Magog returns as a powerful and wary enforcer of his world's harsh status quo. His world (Earth-22) was reshaped after the events ofDark Nights: Death Metal and the Multiverse's restoration. InInfinite Frontier #2, he aggressively confrontsThomas Wayne and Calvin Ellis (Earth‑23 Superman), warning them that "outsiders aren't welcome on Earth-22," implying his world has reverted to his more extreme version.

In issues #4–5, a cross-multiversal showdown forms between Justice Incarnate and a new villainous team calledInjustice Incarnate, which includes Magog,Superwoman,Dr. Sivana, Lady Quark, aSinestro-corpsifiedJoker, and Machinehead. Magog was positioned as part of this multiverse-spanning threat, embodying a "get off my lawn" attitude toward anomalies and heroes from other worlds.

Dawn of DC[]

Magog's origin is told inBatman/Superman: World's Finest. As a child, David Sikela was rocketed by his parents (Asher and Gayle) to Prime Earth as his world was dying. He was discovered by Batman, Superman, and Robin. Like Superman, Sikela can absorb and store the radiation of a yellow sun, which enable him to use his superhuman abilities. He eventually becomes Superman's sidekick under the nameBoy Thunder, joining the Teen Titans. However, he was later kidnappedthe Joker and tortured by the Joker in Gotham (withthe Key's aid), leaving him traumatized and bent on revenge. After being saved, he nearly kills Joker and was thrown to a different dimension by the Key, where he met the godGog.

David was later transported into Earth‑22 (the Kingdom Come universe), where he grows into an adult hero calledThunderman. He eventually encountersGog, an ancient god aligned with the Anti‑Life Equation. Gog reshapes David into Magog, granting him power and a brutal worldvie. As Gog's herald, Magog leads Earth‑22's heroes in a suicidal assault on Apokolips, using a stolen Mobius Chair to open a Boom Tube. Superman and Batman from Earth‑0 arrive on Earth-22 and join forces with their Earth‑22 counterparts, confronting Gog's plan to wage "glorious death".

In a pivotal moment, Magog personally kills Gog to preventDarkseid from gaining the Anti‑Life Equation. Though he saves billions, Superman and Batman rebuke Magog for killing Gog, emphasizing that nothing justify killing. Earth‑22 Superman and Batman also chastise him for crossing "the line". A vision by the Spectre and a final meeting with an aged Kingdom Come Magog show the trajectory of his future, and Superman offers forgiveness, urging him to "burn those regrets to light a better future".

David Reid appears in theYoung Justice episode "Failsafe", voiced byKevin Michael Richardson. He was introduced in a psychic training exercise designed by Martian Manhunter. He's depicted as a soldier who fought underGeneral Wade Eiling during an alien invasion, part of the exercise's fabricated scenario. David is later mentioned in the Season 3 episode "Nevermore" as a member of the Justice League, under the alias Magog. Guy Gardner lists him among the other League members.

Magog is the main antagonist of the Arrowverse crossover tie-in comicsEARTH-PRIME Magog, also known as David Reid, was reimagined as multiversal villain who seeks to free humanity from reliance on superheroes, viewing them as catalysts for destruction rather than true protectors. In the past, David was confident that heroes would protect the people. However, his home was destroyed and his family died in the fire. His work was later destroyed as a collateral damage from the Martian Manhunter's fight with a villain. Since then, David was driven insane from the trauma of losing his loved ones in front of his eyes and blamed the heroes for drawing danger to Earth.

He's been assembling a team of villains; includingClayface,Bloodwork,Evil Eye, and an alternate version ofSuperman, to support his crusade against the "Age of Heroes". Over the course of the first five issues, Magog's influence surfaces through teaser panels and villains he manipulates behind the scenes.

In the last issue, set in 2049 on Earth‑Prime,Magog lead an all-out in Central City, while most heroes vanish temporarily in green mist, leaving Impulse and XS to hold off his team of villains. Eventually, Supergirl and an older Clark Kent returns with other heroes to help the young speedsters defeat Magog by shattering his power spear, which neutralizes his abilities.

In 2009, Magog was ranked as IGN's 75th-greatest comic book villain of all time.
David's suit as "Boy Thunder" resembles the costume worn by Nova, an alternate version of Superman from Earth-178.
