Biography[]
Past[]
Dr. Herbert Edgar Wyndham was born in Manchester, England, to unnamed parents - whom moved to the countryside when he was young. Around the 1920s-1930s, Herbert studied at Oxford University in the field of genetics, having been inspired byNathaniel Essex (akaMr. Sinister). He started to attempt evolving rats with a machine he made called the "Genetic Accelerator", and later learned more about the genetic code from the Inhuman Phaeder. However, his experiments were exposed, causing him to be expelled from the university.
He later succeeds by his pet Dalmatian "Dempsey" with the brain of a chimpanzee and with a humanoid appearance. After being expelled, he joins a partnership with Johnathon Drew, whom was the father of Jessica. When Jonathan's daughter became ill from the Wundagore mountains' uranium, Herbert assisted Drew in saving her life with spider serum and his technology.
Becoming the High Evolutionary[]
At some point after creating the New Men, Wyndham became known as the High Evolutionary, and formed Knights of Wundagore to fight against the demon Chthon. While continuing his experiments, the evolutionary encountered the heroes Hulk and Thor, and fought against them. After his battles, Dr. Wyndham decided to leave the planet to outer space to continue his evolution, where he turned himself into an artificial intelligence. He later returned to Earth when Man-Beast was causing array in Wundagore, and managed to return to his original body with his powers.
Returning to space, the High Evolutionary used his technology to create a copy of Earth from alien material, which he then named "Counter Earth". His intention was to create another Earth that wasn't corrupted by humanity's evil, and discovered the cocoon that held Him, whom he later named "Adam Warlock" upon his rebirth. After naming his foster child, Dr. Wyndham gave Warlock the soul gem and tasked him to protect Counter-Earth form threats. The High Evolutionary's plans were later foiled upon the arrival of Galactus, whom defeated Herbert, and the Beyonder, who wanted Counter-Earth to be put into his museum. The scientist attempted to defeat the Beyonder, but after learning that the being was far more advanced than him, became depressed and lured the Hulk into seemingly killing him.
Though initially believed dead, the High Evolutionary's armor was damaged, causing him to devolve into goo until he was restored. Angered at the Beyonder for being advanced, the scientist turned his attention to creating a more advanced evolution of humankind to rival the cosmic being.
