Gloomius Maximus is a recurring character in Nelvana's 1998-2004 CGI animated seriesRolie Polie Olie (which is based onWilliam Joyce's 1997-98 children's picture book series of the same name), serving as the main antagonist of its first direct-to-video feature filmRolie Polie Olie: The Great Defender of Fun, and asupporting character in the sixth and final season, as well as the second feature filmRolie Polie Olie: The Baby Bot Chase.
He is a fun-stealing pirate who lives in space, and has the ability to convert planets robbed of fun to total gloominess. He is also the former archenemy ofSpace Boy andSpace Dog,Willy, and Wally Jolly, and especiallyOlie,Zowie andBilly, before he became a nicer bot due to Zowie's act of kindness. His collaborators are theBaddies who help as he asks for support.
Gloomius Maximus looks as though he had parts that came straight from a junkyard. His head has a blue paint job and appears to be rusting around his eyes, under his square nose and on his red lips. He wears a red pirate outfit, a golden belt with the letter G on it, a red bicorne hat with a feather on it, a single black boot on his left foot and has a brass sword-like appendage for a left hand and a brass peg leg replacing his right leg.
Personality[]
Gloomius Maximus hates anything fun and happy in general. According to what he told Zowie, this is because he never had a birthday party of his own as a little bot nor was he ever invited to one, so he decided that if he cannot be happy, no one can. So, he began using his un-funerators to suck the happiness and fun out of any bot, object and planet he came across. His arsenal of un-fun weaponry include his Ultra Gloomerator Glum Beam, capable of rendering a person downer than the downy dumps and fall asleep and unable to wake up. Only the power of laughter is capable of undoing Gloomius weapons affects and sending him into retreating.
Like all pirate stereotypes, he took anything that's not his, such as when he stole Zowie's Super Silly Ray in his first appearance. He hated laughter, his only weakness, as it forced him to retreat. He is shown to be very ticklish and temperamental, as seen when he burst out laughing when the Jollies used their swords to tickle him and when Olie threw a Tickle-Me-Pickle at him. He was immune to fun weapons such as the Super Silly Ray because of his extremely bad mood, but after giving it a tune up, Olie is able to blast a billion bubbles at him, and he finally started to feel its effects, and he acted enthusiastic, jovial, and giddy. After getting his happy gear running for the first time in so many years, thanks to Olie using the Super Silly Ray and Zowie's act of kindness of inviting him to her birthday party, he became a completely different bot altogether, declaring "I'm the happiest bot in the universe!".
Afterwards, Gloomius had become a mischievous, fun-loving anti-hero and values Zowie as his best friend.

The name "Gloomius Maximus" is a pun of "Gluteus Maximus", the scientific term for the buttocks.
Gloomius and his minions, as well as the Rust Monster from the episode "Rust in Space", mark the only antagonists in the entire series. Although Screwy is often seen as the main antagonist in the last two seasons, he only serves as a generic bully, and does nowhere near as much conflict as Gloomius (who is a true villain) does with his attempt to literally suck the fun out of everything around him.
Both of his voice actors, James Woods and Paul Haddad, plus Adrian Truss, the voice of both Mr. Percy Polie and Uncle Gizmo, mark the only three non-Canadian voice actors in the entire series, at least by birth. Woods is fully American, while although Haddad and Truss grew up in Canada, both were actually born in England.
Gloomius and Billy are also the only two characters in the series to have been recast; Gloomius was originally voiced by James Woods in the first feature filmThe Great Defender of Fun, before being replaced with Paul Haddad starting with the episode "Give it Back Gloomius". Billy on the other hand, was voiced by Joshua Tucci in the first five seasons and the same film, and Christopher Clark in Season 6 and the second filmThe Baby Bot Chase.
Gloomius' second voice actor, Paul Haddad, had passed away in 2020, the same year as Robert Smith (who provided the vocal effects of Spot in the series); they died only three months apart.
Gloomius' overall appearance may have been the basis for numerous characters in Blue Sky's animated featureRobots (also created by William Joyce), especiallyFender Pinwheeler andMadame Gasket in slight ways.
His quote "Drat and double drat!" when he sees Space Boy and Space Dog in the opening of his first film is a reference toDick Dastardly, who is also the icon of the Villains Wiki.
