~ Gambit agreeing to work for Sybil Zane.
Remy Lebeau, better known asGambit, is a major antagonist in the animated seriesWolverine and the X-Men.
Unlike most of the adversaries inWolverine and the X-Men, Gambit is against mutant organizations such as the X-Men, Brotherhood, Marauders and Acolytes, even human organizations, but always go forth the highest bidder, regardless of their nature.
He was voiced byPhil LaMarr, who also voiced Bolivar Trask in the same series,Oil Slick inTransformers: Animated,Drake Sypher inLoonatics Unleashed,Fancy Dan inThe Spectacular Spider-Man,Goigoi inThe Lion Guard,Vamp in theMetal Gear Solid games,Mad Jack inSamurai Jack, The Reach Ambassador inYoung Justice: Invasion,Lucan in Invincible, andBaxter Stockman in TMNT 2012.
Remy Lebeau, became attracted to power and money, hence the name Gambit, and often betray his benefactors, this often led to him not to be trusted so easily.
Thieves's Gambit[]
One night, Sybil Zane summoned a group of the highest bounty hunters in the country, showcasing footage of the MRD chasing a girl who accidentally turned her body into volcanic lava that almost leveled half of the city, had it not been for Wolverine who managed to suppress her powers with a collar.
The hunters all looked at each other and laughed, realizing who the owners of the collars belonged to, Gambit however decides to steal it, but asks what's the offer?
Somehow, Gambit managed to travel in the X-Mansion and steal the collar. Wolverine detected his presence and chased after him in the city. However he was too late, Gambit already sold the collar to Zane, who gave him money for his reward and an extra for his "silence".
Gambit is then confronted by Wolverine, demanding where he took the collar. As Wolverine claims he has become a traitor to his race, as the collar will possibly bring destruction and enslavement to the mutants. Gambit then remembers that Zane gave him a card to perhaps get in contact, instead it is one of his ace cards that detonates as he throws towards Wolverine.
Enemy of my Enemy[]
Playing cat and mouse, Gambit leads him to a warehouse, where Wolverine manages to defeat him and then throws his bags of cash into fire. Hysterically Gambit calls Wolverine a lunatic, but Wolverine is crazy enough to know the rules of thieves guild, which leads Gambit to ally with Wolverine, and lead him to Zane place of operations. Bolivar Trask, where Wolverine leads an assault on Bolivar Trask, Gambit meanwhile meets with Zane who wants the collar back. Zane enraged claimed that she gave him what he wanted and had a deal, Gambit instead wants to make a new deal, where he wants the collar. Zane raises a gun at him to get away from her car, as he backs away he kinetically charges the car to explode, this causes the collar to fly out of her purse, where he picks it up with his bo staff.
Gambit reveals to keep the collar for himself, seeing how the device could possibly make him billions, to of course the right bidder. Zane and Trask escape but not before activating Sentinel Prowlers, which forces Wolverine to take the collar leading to him and Gambit being holed up at a wall. Gambit demands of the collar, and will help him, Wolverine hesitates at first being chucks the collar's container to him, which Gambit once again betrays Wolverine leaving him to die against the Sentinel Prowlers.
Gambit outside checks to see the collar, but then notices it is missing, Wolverine took it before he could get it back, Gambit then turns around, seeing the warehouse emit flares of blast. Gambit smirks, still seeing a victory despite the collar gone, he at least got Wolverine off his back, as he disappears in the night.
Little did he know, Wolverine returned to the mansion with the collar, and telling the others they need better locks on the it. Wolverine and Gambit's little adventure, eventually went back to him and Xavier, where Wolverine discovered a file calledMaster Mold. Something Xavier would eventually discover being the main head honcho for the Sentinels in the future, their supreme master, and the Mutants's extinction.
Arriving to Genosha and Meeting Polaris[]
In Aces of Eight, Xavier and Wolverine discover another figure assigned by Robert Kelly himself, goes to Genosha, attempting to stealMagneto's helmet.
Around this time Gambit decides to live in Genosha, where he is confronted by mutant guard mooks and swiftly takes them out. Greeted by Magneto and Scarlet Witch, he is given amnesty, and caught the attraction of Polaris, Scarlet Witch's sister. Throughout his time, Gambit and Polaris begin to bond, Scarlet Witch of course is skeptical of this, and throws him into jail. Gambit is told by another mutant, that he was dating Polaris, and the mutant cell inmate declares that he is about to tread some serious ground with that one.
Polaris confronts Wanda declaring that she is no different as she is in love with Nightcrawler a rogue of Genosha and Magneto.
Polaris breaks Gambit out of jail and decides to go away from Genosha. Gambit also places bombs near Genosha's waterfalls, as they reach Gambit's boat, he reveals to have double crossed her even admitting he is no prince charming as he showcases Magneto's helmet. This saddens Polaris who uses her magnetic powers, to get the helmet and even use it to damage Gambit's boat, as he disappointedly admits Polaris has Scarlet Witch's temper as well.
Gambit is last seen still on his boat, despite the damaged exposure to its surface, and possibly managed to escape Genosha, however his whereabouts are currently unknown.
His actions on Genosha, leads to Magneto confronting Robert Kelly, attempted to kill him, but both him and Kelly are subdued by the X-Men. Wolverine allows Charles Xavier to show them both a future from which the Sentinels win, mutants and humans alike are killed, leading to Kelly decommissioning the Sentinel project, while Magneto instead decides to control the future, by manipulating the humans to reproduce the Sentinels again. This leads to a climatic fight with thePhoenix and Sentinels and Magneto withdrawing from ruling all of the mutants.
Days of Future Past[]
Of course like many mutants, Gambit was killed off screen when theSentinels revolted and attacked humans and mutants alike.
Age of Apocalypse[]
Because the Days of Future Past future was erased, thanks to the X-Men, the Age of Apocalypse future was born. Given the fact this future was about the mutants ruling the earth, and no humans to be seen, Gambit possibly lived peacefully as a mutant resident or possibly became a rogue ofApocalypse and X-Men of this future given his treacherous nature.
Personality[]
Gambit is a greedy, overzealous mutant, at first he seems to be a loyal deal maker, but only when things escalate or if generates a better plan he is shown to be very slick and slippery and even difficult to negotiate with. In his debut episode, when he steals the X-Men's suppression collar, of course Wolverine realizes how desperate and untrustworthy he is. Even to others like Scarlet Witch, notice and find how truly mysterious and discrete like Gambit is. Despite his deal makings and decisive methods, he himself realizes this and seems to fully be self aware of his desires to get he wants, regardless of the consequences. When comes to the thrill of waging, anyone close to him could pay a price, such when he betrays Polaris, and steals Magneto's helmet, and reveals it to her.
Trivia[]
This is the only version of Gambit (excluding some comics, X-Men: Evolution, and X-Men Origins: Wolverine) who doesn't join up with the X-Men or doesn't reform; instead he is a neutral but villainous party, supporting foes like the MRD, Bolivar Trask, Sybil Zane, Senator Kelly and Magneto, only due to paying him a higher fortune or granting him, amnesty.
This version of Gambit is often seen double-crossing his bosses such as Sybil Zane and Wolverine, showcasing a villainous, greedier take of Gambit that has not been shown on screen or film, with the only exception being the comics.
For some reason this Gambit is never seen with Rogue, he instead has a brief relationship with Polaris (who usually dates Havok), rather than Rogue like the previous incarnations. Possibly, if he had returned in season 2, him and Rogue could've finally met and began the traditional relationship the two often have.
Gambit is also a member of the Horsemen of Apocalypse in the comics and eventually X-Men 97, given the following season would focus on Apocalypse, he would've centered on making his horsemen of apocalypse. It is unknown if Gambit would become Death, but he might've been a chosen agent, possibly if Archangel was freed from Sinister's control.
Gambit had another design which showcased him with spikey hair and a fully buttoned leather vest jacket.
