Doctor Stephen Vincent Strange M.D., Ph.D was the Sorcerer Supreme and a Master of the Mystic Arts and a minor antagonist in Season 1 ofWhat If...?. He was infected with a Quantum Virus in 2018 and was killed byWasp's ants after trying to eat Bruce Banner.

Biography[]

Background[]

Due to being a variant of the mainstream Doctor Strange, his life isn't any different than his, being a brilliant yet arrogant neurosurgeon who lost his gift after surviving a car accident. Putting all his wealth in trying to fix his hands, Strange would hear about a man who managed to walk again, and traveled across the world to find him. He would later become a member of the Masters of the Mystic Arts, and was given the title of master of the New York Sanctum.

What If...?[]

When the Quantum virus started to spread across the United States, Doctor Strange and Wong were infected (presumably by Iron Man) and attempted to devour on the living.Though the zombie kept all of Strange's magical abilities, the Cloak of Levitation left him but stayed around the New York Sanctum waiting for a new user.Doctor Strange and Wong would work with a zombified Iron Man, much like their mainstream counterparts did during this time period. When Ebony Maw and Cull Obsidian, two members of theBlack Order, arrived to earth to announceThanos' arrival.The group returned to New York and infected them both and attempted to kill a newly-arrived Bruce Banner, but they were stopped by the Cloak of Levitation. Doctor Strange was then killed by Hope van Dyne's ants, who proceeded to kill Iron Man and rescue Banner with the help of Spider-Man.

Legacy[]

At one point, Thanos or another member of the Black Order found the zombified Strange's corpse and snatched the Time Stone from it in order to complete Thanos' mission to balance the universe with the power of the six Infinity Stones.

Appearance[]

In his zombified state, Strange dons the same blue outfit he wore during Infinity War sans the Cloak of Levitation, although damaged. Due to his zombification, his skin turned a putrid green color. There are multiple scars and wounds on his body, most notably a piece of exposed bone in his left arm, a double claw-like scar across his face, and his left eye completely missing and leaving his orbital exposed. In order to facilitate the process of eating the uninfected, his lips were also removed (presumably by eating them himself) much like the other zombies.

This version of the character is the first variant of Doctor Strange to have become a zombie in the MCU, succeeded by hisheroic iteration fromDoctor Strange and The Multiverse of Madness which released nearly a year after this variant's debut.
