Nihilists
| “ | Why do people insist on creating things that will inevitably be destroyed? Why do people cling to life, knowing that they must someday die? ...Knowing that none of it will have meant anything once they do? | „ |
| ~Kefka Palazzo. |
| “ | Gods don't exist, and Buddhas don't either. Yet these people lived for decades without realizing it. Once they die, it's all just gonna return to nothing. They won't feel anything. And then they rot into the ground. As long as you live on this Earth, that's your eternal fate. They just can't accept that simple fact. It must be so hard being stupid. I want to make these sorrowful people happy. I want to help them. That's the reason I was born, after all. | „ |
| ~Doma. |
Nihilists are villains who believe that the existence of life has no purpose, value, or meaning, their own included. Nihilists do not believe in moralities and all rules and/or codes they follow are superficial or for practical reasons. They usually do not have specific long–term goals, will sink to all levels of depravity to further their arbitrary objectives, and are oftensociopaths, psychotic and/orsuicidal. They can overlap withSocial Darwinists andHarbingers for Rebirth as well through shared beliefs in bringing about the"end times" and leaving others or themselves to pick up pieces left behind by the messes they have created.
Most nihilists wish to destroy everything in existence or at least whatever is possible for them to destroy. What makes them some of the most dangerous and unpredictable villains is that they have nothing to lose, not even their very lives. At the highest point, they arecataclysmic, due to a desire to literally erase everything as they see fit. Like many powerful and far-reaching villains, they might just be able to make their twisted dreams into reality. However, it is important to note that not ALL nihilists will act like this, but mostly the more sinister or destructive ones will.
Someredeemed nihilists decide to appreciate life more and stop being nihilistic (e.g.Thorfinn) after their redemption (although they might not too). It should also be worth noting that nihilists can still be capable of caring and/or beingprotective over a select few while still being uncaring to everyone else.
Sometimes, nihilists can beparanoid, showing low to moderate fear of certain things, such as beingimprisoned or trapped in an inescapable situation, where their fear does stem from the loss of autonomy and agency, as well fear losingcontrol over theirnarrative or beingused by others to serve a purpose they perceive as meaningless.
Good examples of nihilists includeDoma,Jobu Tupaki,Vincent,Kefka Palazzo,Owlman,Isaac Ray Peram Westcott,Lavos,Null,Count Bleck,Black Moon,Junko Enoshima,TheLich,Davy Jones,Judge Holden,Herrscher of the Void,AM,John Doe,Agent Smith,Patrick Bateman,The End,Invictus,Thanos,Fang Yuan,Obito Uchiha,Johan Liebert,Urizen,Masayuki Kaneki,Micah Bell,Darth Nihilus,Kirei Kotomine,Vile King,Vaas Montenegro,The Joker,Michael Myers andHunter.
They are the polar opposite ofAnti-Nihilists.
Notes[]
- If a villainseems nihilistic, but at the same time still values their own existence (e.g.The Ink Demon,Bill Cipher,Sal,Dimentio,Mahito,Evolt,Dr. Robotnik (SatAM),Cigarette-Smoking Man,Henry Evans,Aku,Muzan Kibutsuji,Pitch Black,Horde Prime,All For One,Dan Mandel,Skynet,Lots-o'-Huggin' Bear,Mundus,Mephiles the Dark,Flowey,Freddy Krueger,Chucky,Art The Clown,Gareth,The Batman Who Laughs,Clay Puppington,Mio Takamiya, andThe Governor), theydo not qualify. The appropriate and/or correct term is "Absurdists". Those types of villains should go under these categories:
- Cowards who started off showing nihilistic sides, and only start panicking or running away from their downfall in the climax.
- Furthermore,Cowards canNEVER be nihilists because a coward values their life very much, unlike a nihilist who only cares to a lesser extent about what happens to them. The two are also polar opposites.
- However, sometimes cowards may beSuicidal to escape justice when they cannot control the situation.
- Furthermore,Cowards canNEVER be nihilists because a coward values their life very much, unlike a nihilist who only cares to a lesser extent about what happens to them. The two are also polar opposites.
- Hypocrites/Liars who expressed nihilistic traits and views only to contradict it if and they deep down show they do not genuinely believe that.
- Egotists who only seem nihilistic because they cannot get what they desire, merely appearing they don't care about anything until they get closer to their desires.
- Social Darwinists who believe there is no higher purpose other than "survival of the fittest," but ONLY use this twisted ideology as an excuse to hurt others for their own valued gain.
- Misanthropes/Xenophobes who show nihilistic views, yet only because deep down they harbor a great hatred for humanity or their species of origin out of bitterness.
- Cowards who started off showing nihilistic sides, and only start panicking or running away from their downfall in the climax.
- Not all nihilists aredestructiveorChaotic Evilin nature. Some may beNeutral Evilif they have some sort of self-serving goal (e.g.Sephiroth,Griffith,Vicious,Goro Akechi,Vincent,Dorian Gray,Anton Chigurh,Harry Lime,Frank Underwood,Decagrammaton,Grimmel the Grisly,Eon,Baron Zemo,Superfly,Angstrom Levy,Penguin (Batman Returns),Yog-Sothoth,Giratina andZeref Dragneel), while others can beLawful Evil if they still oppress others with their own standard(s) (e.g.Zod (DC Extended Universe),Bane,Solf J. Kimblee,Dark Enchantress Cookie,Professor Robotnik,Nobuhiko Akizuki,Ecole,Darkseid (DC Animated Universe),The Devourer,Void,Qu,Omni-Man,Thragg,Akaza,Kokushibo,Char Aznable,Darth Vader andAkihiko Kayaba). In fact, they may also beChaotic Neutral (Bass,Jimmy Darmody,Kratos,Rick Sanchez andStrange Supreme) or, in rare cases, evenLawful Neutral (Namor (MCU) andSCP-049).
- If a villain only shows gleefulness during their death and/or are defiant to the end (e.g.John Kramer,Badger,Billy Grey,Raul Menendez,Ernst Stavro Blofeld (Reboot), andPong Krell), they also do not qualify. In order to count as a nihilist, it is necessary that they must expound an outlook via words or writing (if available) and/or through their actions or visual flashbacks show that they have zero value for any living being, including themselves.
- Despite their unsympathetic nature, not all nihilists should qualify asPure Evil, because some of them may havepainful backstories that end up warping their worldviews, making them sympathetic to varying degrees (e.g.Arthur Fleck,Monika,Lucy,Shiroko Terror,Gyutaro,Sweeney Todd,Baldur (God of War),Tomura Shigaraki,Dabi,Himiko Toga,Superfly,Carrie White,Jeff the Killer,Andrew Graves,One,SCP-682,Merlina,Chara,TRAGEDY,Yuno Gasai,Andrew Detmer,Ticci-Toby,Gorr the God Butcher and hisMCU counterpart,Starlight Glimmer,Aggie Prenderghast,Baron Zemo,Victor Crowley,Vaas Montenegro,Michael Myers (remake),Darth Vader,Count Bleck, andDarth Maul). However, they can qualify as Pure Evil if their nihilism doesn't make them sympathetic (e.g.Isaac Ray Peram Westcott,Kefka Palazzo,Cursa,Gwi-Ma,The Recruiter (Squid Game),Vanitas,Marlo Stanfield,Micah Bell,Enter,AM,Omega Red,Solomon Lane,Absolute Solver,Reclusa,Corporal Gallo,Bloodwolf,Scarlet King,Victor Zsasz,Kazuo Kiriyama, and the anime version ofCyrus).
