| “ | Call us bad guys, call us villains, call us whatever you like -- though I prefer "anti-heroes" myself. We may not be the ones you want to marry your daughter, but we have this to say for ourselves -- when everything goes to Hell -- we're the ones -- maybe the only ones -- that are certain to survive. Why, you ask? Because, unlike the "good" guys, we're willing to do whatever it takes to survive. Honestly, I'd love nothing more than to put the whole thing out of my mind. Those weeks we spent trapped on that miserable Hellhole of a planet. But it keeps coming back to me -- the death and the tension and the waiting. So I let those thoughts run their course, and I experience it all over again for a few minutes like it's still happening. And then I get on with my life. Those in my profession don't get a lot of time for reflection. We're always moving forward, always on to the next thing. We have to. It's what we know. We do what we have to do. We fight. And we survive. | „ |
| ~ Captain Cold. |
Leonard Snart, also known asCaptain Cold, is a major antagonist in theDC Universe, specifically serving as the secondary antagonist ofThe Flash franchise and a major antagonist in theJustice League franchise.
He is a dangerous yet honorable supervillain who serves as the leader of his group theRogues, and is the older brother ofGolden Glider, as well as one of the arch-enemies ofThe Flash.
History[]
Modern Age[]
Raised by an abusive and alcoholicfather, Snart's relationships with his grandfather and his sisterLisa were the only good things in his life. Following the death of his grandfather, Snart left home and soon turned to petty crime to survive. At first, he attempted simple thievery with a band of thugs.
After this failed to produce satisfactory results, he went solo. When working as part of a criminal gang, he was arrested by The Flash and sent to jail. While in jail, Snart created a special cold gun that he hoped would give him the edge in his next confrontation with The Flash.
After he was released, he returned to a life of crime, now as Captain Cold, and soon teamed up with other villains to form theRogues. During a botched robbery of a cyclotron, Snart's gun was altered by the cyclotron's radiation, allowing it to fire beams of pure cold and, from time to time, cast illusions.
The New 52[]
After several defeats by The Flash, Cold tried to upgrade the Rogues' powers by using a Genome Recorder, but it backfired, leaving his friends injured and Lisa in a coma. When The Flash's enemy Mob Rule caused a blackout, it threatened Snart's sister's chances of survival. Snart blamed The Flash and attacked the hero.
In the end, The Flash not only stopped Captain Cold but used his Speed Force to help Lisa survive. She joined the Rogues as Golden Glider, having gained powers of her own. The Rogues had their own strict code one that brought them into conflict with more brutal evildoers, such asGorilla Grodd and theCrime Syndicate.
Captain Cold joinedLex Luthor's group of villains to attack the Syndicate, and after the its defeat, found himself hailed a hero. Hired as Lex's bodyguard, Snart helped Lex and the Justice League combat theAmazo virus.
A true criminal at heart, Captain Cold returned to the Rogues and planned the perfec against The Flash. However,Heat Wave deviated from the plan, causing The Flash to best them yet again. Despite using a new Black Ice gun, Cold was incarcerated.
However, he used his time in Iron Heights Penitentiary to become the new head of Central City's underworld, and he even killed his fellow inmate,Turbine. Later transferred to Belle Reve, Captain Cold served time with theSuicide Squad before Lex Luthor broke him free and upgraded his technology.
Cold used his new enhanced cold-based weaponry to conquer Central City and imprison The Flash. However, The Flash teamed up with Golden Glider and other Rogues to knock some sense into Snart. Captain Cold remained at large, plotting his next course of action against The Flash and Central City.
Powers and Abilities[]
Captain Cold wields special "cold guns" which he uses to freeze anything and everything to the core. It can even turn the moisture contained in thin air into solid ice.
In the New 52, at one point after going through experiments, he gained the ability to use these powers himself to where he could create a special freezing field to reduce the Flash's speed to human level. These powers were later removed by Deathstorm during theForever Evil event, forcing Cold to go back to using his cold guns.
Cold has a history as a bizarre romantic, becoming obsessed with impressing the "beautiful woman of the hour" with lavish stolen gifts. He and Heat Wave first met as rivals for "Dream Girl", a supermodel who also turned out to be a long-lost heiress.
At one point,Cold sought out the aged movie star Laura Lamont and used the cold gun to restore her youth. But she turned out to be a spectacularly vain woman who was furious that she would have to go t hrough the aging process all over again from scratch.

In the video game, Captain Cold is a member of the Society, led byGorilla Grodd, but started out as a member of the Suicide Squad in the comic prequel.
He has a personal grudge against the former members of theSuperman Regime after they killed all of his friends (Rogues), including his sister, Lisa. However, his prominent animosity, true to the comics, remains towards the Flash.
In the Flash's chapter, Captain Cold confronted him alongsideDeadshot. When Flash expresses his shock that Cold, of all people, would support the invasion, Cold retorts by saying that he is not going to defend the people who cheered on the deaths of the Rogues, including Lisa. Flash, upon defeating him, notes that Cold has the right to be angry with him, even saying, "I guess we both let each other down."
Later, Cold attacked Wonder Woman with most of the Society. During their confrontation, Cold calls her out for being the one who murdered his sister, with Diana pointing out that he was the one who turned her to crime in the first place before defeating him. It is unknown what happened to Cold after this; however, one might assume that he turned on Grodd along with most of the others after finding out about his true goals.
In his ending, he freezes both Grodd andBrainiac before they could destroy the earth, which Cold states that despite himself hating and going after the Regime, he wouldn't destroy the world. After dealing with them, he visits his sister's grave, telling her that he's turning over a new leaf, making sure the regime won't happen again. He even became partners with The Flash, saying, " Ironically or whatever, he's the best partner I ever had".
