Captain Boomerang is a name used by two supporting antagonists from theDC Universe;George "Digger" Harkness and his sonOwen Mercer.
Harkness was a mercenary and killer with an aptitude for boomerangs and other projectiles. He is a major enemy to The Flash and, since his incarceration, has become a member of Task Force X aka theSuicide Squad.
Biography[]
Modern Age[]
Born into an impoverished family, Digger Harkness took up throwing boomerangs as a special talent. Later, he tried to make a living by selling toy boomerangs at a toy store. The customers made fun of him and mocked his toys, so he turned to a life of crime. The character debuted inThe Flash #117, and nearly kills the Flash by tying him to a giant boomerang that he catapults into space. A longtime member of the infamousRogues, the Flash's recurring adversaries, Captain Boomerang developed a harder edge after joining theSuicide Squad. He was later hired to kill Jack Drake, the father of Tim Drake, but as he carried out the contract, he was also killed by his target during the conflict.
Harkness' son, Owen Mercer, was abandoned by Digger and raised in a foster home. Owen later learned that he is the half-brother of the current Kid Flash, Bart Allen, from his father, shortly before his death, and went on to become the new Captain Boomerang. After a brief stint with the superhero team, the Outsiders, Owen returned to the side of evil during the Blackest Night when he feed the hearts of the living to his father, who returned as aBlack Lantern duringNekron's attack on Earth and was reborn following Nekron's defeat. Owen was killed by his fellow Rogues for breaking their rules.
The New 52[]
Born in Kurrumburra, Australia, George "Digger" Harkness grew up poor. His father was supposedly a US soldier who had abandoned his family when his son was very young. As a child, Digger developed an aptitude for boomerangs and soon became deadly with them. After serving first in the military and then in the Australian Secret Service, he moved to the US where he turned to crime, battling the Flash on many occasions and becoming a longtime member of theRogues.
InThe Flash #7 (2011), Digger escapes jail and recalls his early years as a villain. After Harkness went to prison,Amanda Waller selected him for Task Force X (theSuicide Squad) along with new memberYo-Yo, to replace fallen members Voltaic andSavant. While Harkness claimed to be the new team leader, and was given a detonator to control the explosive devices buried inside his fellow teammates, this was later revealed to be a ruse by Waller.
Harkness was captured on a mission against the terrorist group known asBasilisk and seemed to betray the Suicide Squad, until he helped them break free. Waller had asked him to infiltrate Basilisk and get close to its leader, Regulus, to help defeat him.
DC Rebirth[]
After many more missions with the Squad, Boomerang was seemingly killed byGeneral Zod. Luckily for Digger, he was brought back to reality by new memberHack. One of his later missions led him back to his small Australian town, where he met a son he was't quite aware of, Owen Mercer, who was now an adult and a brilliant arms dealer.
Eventually, Captain Boomerang went on enough Suicide Squad missions to earn his freedom, although he almost immediately broke the terms of his parole by freely talking about the top secret task force. In reaction, a new Squad captured Boomerang. When Digger's old allyDeadshot was told to kill Harkness, Deadshot rebelled and killed their handler instead. The Suicide Squad escaped and ironically enough, the Flash rescued Boomerang from the authorities and brought him back to Australia. Never one to stay out of trouble, however, Digger opted to return to Central City and rejoin the Rogues.
Powers and Abilities[]
Captain Boomerang (Digger Harkness) has no real powers, but he is a mechanical genius, capable of making special boomerangs that explode on contact. He has also been known to create boomerangs with especially sharp edges.
Owen Mercer, being Bart Allen's half-brother, had limited super speed.
