Alioth is a major antagonist in theDisney+Marvel Cinematic Universe seriesLoki and the 2024 filmDeadpool & Wolverine. He is a monstrous entity that (since his banishment) lives in the Void, a dimension that houses every branched timeline and variant pruned by the Time Variance Authority, where he seeks out said branched timelines and variants to devour.

Alioth also serves as a guardian ofHe Who Remains, the creator of theTVA. Upon being enchanted byLoki Laufeyson andSylvie Laufeydottir, he reveals the pathway to his base.

Appearance[]

Alioth takes the form of a titanic mass of purple clouds, with a head resembling an snake with glowing red sockets.

Personality[]

Alioth had no discernible sapience, therefore no personality; however, it does show constant aggression and hostility with or without provocation. While becoming focused on a single target that remained until consuming them, Alioth's attention and fury can be easily taken by a significant distraction, which becomes the new target that would make it lose interest in the prior one (unless the first meal remained nearby).

It did show some level of bestial awareness in that it periodically returned to Cassandra Nova's fortress due to her offering sacrifices often enough to make it begin following a pattern of feeding. This ability to comply to direction was also previously exploited by He Who Remains to defeat his variants in the Great Multiversal War.

History[]

Background[]

A genius scientist discovered a way to communicate with and travel to alternate universes; variants of this scientist likewise achieved the same breakthrough. However, multiple legions of his variants had designs greater than simple discovery and exploration, as they intended to conquer other universes, or failing that, destroy them to prevent future threats to their own empires.

The Great Multiversal War erupted, causing endless death and destruction across all realities. The act of breaching different universes released energies that conglomerated into an animalistic entity, which the original scientist found and named this creature Alioth; he harnessed its power to consume time and space to win the Multiversal War. The scientist would then shape his universe into what he called the Sacred Timeline, which would have alternate branches pruned to prevent breaking the barrier he created to protect the Timeline from his warmongering variants.

The scientist would eventually be called He Who Remains; he kept Alioth in a realm outside of the universe called the Void, into which pruned individuals and worlds would be banished to be eventually devoured by Alioth. He would create a pocket dimension at the end of time, which would exist through a passage that was accessed through Alioth; he would dwell in this dimension to supervise the continuous flow of time, and also maintaining it to ensurehis variants couldn't unleash war across the multiverse again.

Loki[]

Alioth debuts as the main antagonist of the fifth episode "Journey Into Mystery", where he oversees the Void, killing any nearby variants he finds, demonstrated by him destroying the recently-transported USSEldridge and its crew.

He spends the majority of the episode hunting downLoki, Classic Loki, Kid Loki and Alligator Loki, as well asSylvie Laufeydottir and Mobius M. Mobius. When Sylvie mind-links with him, she receives a vision of a mysterious structure on a planetoid, likely housing the creator of the TVA.

Loki and Sylvie hatch a plan to escape the Void by enchanting Alioth. They soon confront and battle him, and, with the help of Classic Loki, combine their powers and successfully enchant him, causing his cloudy body to recede and reveal the pathway to the base.

Sometime later,Ravonna Renslayer finds herself alone and stranded in the Void after being pruned by Sylvie. There, she is greeted by the unseen figure of Alioth towering over her, leaving her ultimate fate unknown, but chances are that Alioth may have devoured her.

Deadpool & Wolverine[]

Later, it's revealed Alioth became the "pet" ofCassandra Nova who eats anyone opposing her, although she doesn't so much control it, but offer sacrifices in manner that "tamed" it to keep returning to her compound in order to sate its hunger; Nova's powers were great enough that she may have been able to directly manipulate it, but she only relied upon establishing basic animal feeding habits.

When Cassandra had Deadpool and Wolverine captured, she intended to feed them to Alioth, but the beast's approach caused such gale force winds that the anti-heroes were able to use a rocket leg to escape. Presumably Alioth fed upon some of Cassandra's minions, satisfying its hunger enough to depart.

When Deadpool and Wolverine return with the Legacy heroes, they breach Cassandra's compound. Wolverine was able to appeal to Cassandra's last iota of humanity, thus she used a sling ring to create a portal for them to escape to Earth-10005; as they rushed to the portal, Alioth returned to attack again, but the duo are able to exit the Void before it reached them. The Legacy heroes were also able to evade the monster's maw.

Since Cassandra was destroyed when her plan to destroy the multiverse was reversed, Alioth would likely return to being an aimless force of destruction, hunting the Void without direction.
