Aaravos, also known asthe Fallen Star, is the main antagonist ofNetflix’sThe Dragon Prince franchise.
He is an ancient and powerful Startouch Elf who was once a loving father to his daughter Leola. However, Leola was executed by his fellow Startouch Elves for breaking the cosmic order by giving humans magic. This loss of his daughter drove Aaravos down the path of villainy and he unleashed his vengeance by causing chaos and strife throughout Xadia for centuries, before being imprisoned in a magic pearl by the dragons and elves as punishment for his crimes.
300 years later, he is discovered byLord Viren, and helps him in his attempted conquest of Xadia, while manipulating him into freeing him from his imprisonment. 2 years later, he manipulates Viren's daughterClaudia into going on a quest to free him by promising to save her father's life. Aaravos was later renounced by a redeemed Viren, who realized the error of his ways. After Viren was killed when Katolis was attacked bySol Regem, he tells Claudia the tale of how he lost his daughter Leola, which motivated Claudia into freeing Aaravos from his prison. With his new-found freedom, the latter sought to exact his vengeance on the world by engulfing it in eternal darkness.
Throughout the second saga of the series, Aaravos serves as the arch-nemesis ofTeam Zym, particularlyPrince Callum, whom Aaravos frequently torments by taking control of him whenever he uses dark magic, and as a result, causing him extreme grief and paranoia.
He is voiced byErik Todd Dellums, who has also voicedKoh inAvatar: The Last Airbender, andArcann inStar Wars: The Old Republic.
Physical Appearance[]
Aaravos is a tall, slender male Startouch Elf who has long, pure white flowing hair, deep purple horns, yellow eyes with black sclera, and skin ranging from purple to dark blue to black with white stars dotted all over. He wears robes of similar coloration to his skin, with a splash of blue-green thrown in. When introduced, he wore a dark magenta hood that obscured the upper half of his face.
Personality[]
| “ | I know the patience of countless candles burned down to waxy puddles. I know the patience of apple seeds plucked from the flesh of their fruit, planted and nursed until the strongest of them birth new life from rich soil. I know the patience of a woven tapestry, how the weaver plaits the purpose of every thread, even as they disappear into the beauty of its design. I know the patience of a prisoner. I have not seen the stars in centuries. But when I see them again—when the stars are forced to look upon me, their dark brother—they will know how I have waited. And when everything they have built lies shattered, I will savor their fall from the sky. For I have been patient. | „ |
| ~ Aaravos inPatience. |
Aaravos is mysterious and secretive, but also charming and charismatic. He is usually rather casual in his body language and mannerisms, and hardly ever loses his temper or raises his voice. He remains completely calm even when Viren threatened to smash his mirror and when he disintegrates the Sunfire Elf queen. He is also somewhat smug, as he speaks to Viren as if he were a child.
Aaravos is an exceptionally intelligent, cunning, and manipulative individual. Prime examples of this, are him earning the trust and loyalty of Lord Viren (who is an extremely smart and cunning individual in his own right), and his trick on the Sunfire Elves, anticipating their every decision with complete accuracy. He also knows when to back down from a fight that cannot be won, shown when he stopped Viren from trying to fight a group of archers which surrounded him. However, Aaravos is not incapable of making mistakes, as he failed to anticipate that Rayla would be brave enough to sacrifice herself to save the Dragon Prince by throwing herself and Viren off the Storm Spire.
According to auxiliary material, Aaravos may have held a soft spot for humanity, as it is implied he taught them the ways of Dark Magic so they could hold their own against, if not exceed the elves. Whether he still does or not remains to be seen.
So far it is not made clear what Aaravos's true personal goals are, or whether or not he is truly or completely evil. The series' creators have stated he is a complex character, and that he was erased from history because he was disliked, not necessarily because he was evil. However, he has shown signs of arrogance, sadism and ruthlessness. For example, he states that individuals who cannot be reasoned are simple animals who deserve to be motivated by fear, and encourages Viren to use such to against those who reject him. He also encourages Viren to drain the essence of an innocent dragonling, and whispered to Khessa about how her grandmother Aditi died before killing her too.
Aaravos is also capable of holding a grudge, as shown by his hatred of Avizandum for imprisoning him, a hatred that remains even after almost 300 years. The greatest example of holding a grudge on his part was showed in his hatred of Sol Regem, who reported his daughter to the startouch elf council. For centuries Aaravos maneuveried and manipulatioetd the archdragon to destroy his life and unwittingly serve his purpose, his revenge on Regem continued for a thousand of years until he leaded the dragon to destroy Katolis castle and release his prison, while leading him to a certain death, taunted him before his death, showing that his hatred towards him remained pure all those years.
In Season 6's finale, Aaravos reveals to Claudia that he is motivated by his love for his daughter, Leola. The Startouch elves cruelly executed her for teaching magic to humans, only offering him the chance to die alongside her as their only mercy. Aaravos then spent 100 years weeping in the crater that formed from her death impact, creating the Sea of Castout. In retribution against Startouch elves, Aaravos willingly spread magical knowledge to humans and encouraged their war against Xadia; feeling thatSol Regem and the elves who helped him get his daughter killed deserved punishment.
Before Leola died, Aaravos had a good heart and empathy for morals, including humans. Unlike his kind in the stars, Aaravos enjoyed discovering and exploring the mystery of Xadia and the universe, including learning all the other primal sources of magic in Xadia. Aaravos was a good father to his daughter Leola, who he loved more than anything else in his life. In his quest to get revenge on his daughter's killers, Aaravos buried his empathy under 100 years of grief and hatred, without caring who will get hurt as side damage.
Powers and Abilities[]
Aravaros is arguably one of the most powerful being in the series canon, having mastered the six Primal Magics, seven if one were to count Dark Magic.
Aaravos is an exceptionally skilled manipulator and strategist, as he is able to earn the trust and loyalty of Lord Viren (an extremely sharp-minded individual himself), helps the latter orchestrate a war with Xadia, and pulls a sly and carefully planned trick on the Sunfire Elf Queen, anticipating her every decision with complete accuracy.
Like other Startouch elves, Aaravos is a being from the heavens, meaning he's immortal. He is extremely long-lived, as he is roughly 5,000 years old at the time he is introduced. He also one of the first elves who lived in Xadia.
Due to his ties to dark magic, Aaravos can possess any human wizard who has used dark magic at least once. this is currently unclear what the limits of his ability to possess someone.
due to being a startouch elf, Aaravos can't be kill by mortal ways due to him be an immortal being from the heavens. the only knowing existing way to destroy the mortal vessel body of Aaravos is by a the nova blade, a legendary sword that can kill the mortal vessel of a startouch elf, even with the sword, in a few years, Aaravos could be able to return to the mortal world when his stars would align again and he would be able to manifest physically in Xadia once more.
Quotes[]
The Dragon Prince[]
| “ | Long ago, Xadia was one land rich in magic and wonder. In the old times, there were only the six Primal Sources of magic. The Sun. The Moon. The Stars. The Earth. The Sky. And the Ocean. But a thousand years ago, a human mage discovered new magic, the seventh source. Dark Magic. It used the essence within magical creatures themselves to unleash dark power. Horrified by what they saw, the elves and the dragons put a stop to the madness. They drove every last human to the west. And so, the continent was divided in two. In the east, the magical lands of Xadia. And in the west, the human kingdoms. For centuries, the King of the Dragons himself defended the border. The humans called him Thunder, for when he spoke, his voice shook the Earth and the sky. But on the eve of last Winter's Turn, the humans used unspeakable Dark Magic to slay Thunder. Then, without mercy, they destroyed his only egg, his heir the Dragon Prince. Now the world stands on the edge of all-out war. | „ |
| ~ Aaravos narrating at the beginning of the story. |
| “ | Tell me what you need. And I'll help you. | „ |
| ~ Aaravos offering his aid to Viren. |
| “ | Your arrogance is so predictable. You allowed my vessel to walk right into your court, and then you brought him directly to the source of all your power? [Laughs] Oh, the irony is wonderful! You're just like your grandmother. Would you like to know the truth of her fate before you face yours? | „ |
| ~ Aaravos tauntingSunfire Queen Khessa and telling the truth about her grandmother's fate before killing her. |
| “ | Just a few hours left before your life expires. POOF! | „ |
| ~ Aaravos warning Viren of his approaching death. |
| “ | You're going to a place of peace and everflowing love. Even if you can't feel my loving arms wrapped around you, you will feel me holding you in my mind and with my heart. There's nothing to fear! Close your eyes. Listen to my voice. I am here with you and I love you. All around you...is love! | „ |
| ~ Aaravos' last words to his daughter. |
| “ | All children have a true heart. We are forced to make choices, sacrifices, compromises. And they change us forever. Childhood innocence gives way to something...complicated. | „ |
| ~ Aaravos explaining childhood innocence to Claudia. |
| “ | Aaravos: As I have always said, the so-called Cosmic order of things as ordained by the Elves and the Dragons. Claudia: But why? I need to hear your whole truth, however ugly. Why do you want this. Aaravos: Leola. My sweet baby girl. They punished her, for an innocent mistake. A child, cast to a death to protect their precious cosmic order. So it is only fitting that I deliver their fear. The great unraveling in Leola's name. I want to make them hurt, because they struck a wound so deep in me, that it will never heal. | „ |
| ~ Aaravos explaining his motivation to Claudia. |
| “ | And what will your sacrifices buy? A mere moment of peace, before I return to a world without you? A world without archdragons? Your deaths mean nothing. | „ |
| ~ Aaravos foreshadowing his future return to Avizandum and Zubeia, and also his last words before his physical form is destroyed. |
Short Stories[]
| “ | Let me tell you a story. | „ |
| ~ Aaravos at the begning of each of his short stories. |
| “ | Like all the oldest tales, time has bent its shape and blurred its color. It is a fable whispered on some tongues and shouted on others. While one may say it ends with a sunrise, another will insist it ends at nightfall. Yet at the heart of the story is a single, simple truth… A star fell from the sky. | „ |
| ~ Aarovos startingRipples. |
| “ | No, the human could not know it. Not yet. He could not see how the slightest touch—a breath in the wind, a spark before a flame, a mere teardrop in the sea—could change the world forever. Such elegant simplicity, such power. For ripples grow: They collide, they churn, they drown. They rise like waves or drag into the darkest depths below. I hope the stars were watching. I hope they saw it: the moment their perfect reflections turned warped and ruined, churned to chaos by the touch of a single human hand. In this, the humans taught me another lesson. And so I touch the surface of the water. I watch the ripples spread. | „ |
| ~ Aaravos endingRipples. |
Trivia[]
- Aaravos may have been responsible for Aditi's death. However, this hasn't been confirmed or disproven.
- In Janai's dream, Aaravos said that he "swallowed" her but it is unknown what he means by this but it's implying something horrific. In a way, it's confirming that he had something to do with her grandmother's death.
- According to the Art of the Dragon Prince, Aaravos is a "fallen" Startouch Elf and because of this, can only access a fraction of his former power. It also stated that he is the only member of his race that has ever been encountered by humans and that he has many names, among which were "the last of the great ones" and "the bearer of gifts", further strengthening the fan theory of him being the one who gave Ziard his staff.
- Its later shown in Season 6 that Aaravos loathes his own species for killing his daughter for teaching magic to humans. So he is fallen in that he taught or cheated dark magic in order spite the other Startouch elves.
- In the finale its shown that he indeed create the staff as the purple gem is a disguised Quasar diamond, which was needed to give Aaravos a body again
- Although not confirmed, it's heavily implied by Viren's purple glowing eyes by the end of Season 4 that Aaravos is possessing him. This is further hinted at by the end credits of the same episode.
- There is a popular fan theory that Aaravos is Callum's biological father. However, this has been debunked when his father was confirmed to be a human in an interview and season 6 revealed that he was a simple poet, who had problems when it comes to breathing.
- Not only that, The story clarifies that blood relations do not matter as a way to form a family and Aaravos being his father would ruin Callum's character journey to cast magic. It would also contradict the show's narrative and themes.
- Aaravos is the narrator of the first episode's opening sequence, where he incorrectly said that the Egg of the Dragon Prince was destroyed by humans as it was revealed to still be alive in episode 2 of Book One. He is also the narrator of episode one of Book Three's opening for a brief amount of time and the narrator of the first novel's prologue as it was signed by him. However, he also incorrectly claimed that humans hunted unicorns to extinction as Viren said that Claudia captured a unicorn in episode six of Book Three and unicorns are almost impossible to hunt and are too powerful and cunning to be hunted, according to a home page from the Art of the Dragon Prince.
- As a character Aaravos is viewed in two ways.
- By the humans he is viewed as a Prometheus-like character, who granted humanity the gift and knowledge of dark magic.
- The elves and dragons view him as a Lucifer-like character since he is represented as a great threat to everyone and is very manipulative and malicious. What drives this even further is when is often described as being very interested in mages, especially human mages, driving their inner ambitions.
- He is later shown to genuinely be a bit of both, albeit with some actions swapped to the daughter. Aaravos was a very loving father to his daughter, who was killed by his Celestial brethren for gifting humans magic; in his grief, Aaravos decided to spite his brethren by purposely helping empower humans and ruin the lives of the dragons and elves as revenge.
- Aaravos desire to help humans may also come from respect his daughter who loved them and wanted to help them, however, Aaravos does that by corruption and chaos, in a way that is twisted from Leola's true desire.
- Ever since the release of season 4, a misconception was created when some fans thought the animators changed Aaravo's design. Compared to the previous seasons, they felt he looked less terrifying and more "cute" looking.
- It was later revealed that animators did not change his design at all but the lighting of his character model.
- In season 6 "Stardust" it’s revealed that Aaravos is responsible for the creation of the Sea of Castout because he grieved his daughter’s death for one hundred years.
- In Book 7 "True Heart" Aaravos revealed to Claudia that he was imprisoned for three centuries.
- In Book 7 episode "Dying Light", Aaravos revealed that it takes seven years and nineteen days for his stars to align and he can regain his physical form again.
- Aaravos has recieved a disturbing amount of sympathy from fans who admire his motives while glossing over or outright ignoring his crimes.
