Roots fibrous. Leaves distichous, with a conspicuous midrib and numerous fine longitudinal veins, leaves resupinate. Inflorescence a terminal cymose panicle, rarely flowers single. Flowers bisexual, subtending bracts minute; pedicels articulate; petals and sepals similar; stamens 6, filaments filiform, free, anthers basifixed, dehiscing apically; ovary superior; style elongate, filiform, stigma minute, capitate. Fruit a berry; seeds numerous, sub-globose, shiny, black.

A single variable species from eastern Australia, Malesia and the Pacific islands.
