'Romeo' woos 5 noms, Carrey hooks up 3

“Independence Day,” “Jerry Maguire,” “William Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet,” “Scream” and “The Rock” are the best movie nominees for the sixth annual MTV Movie Awards, which unveiled noms in 11 categories on Thursday.

“Romeo & Juliet” pulled in the largest number of nominations of any film, with five. Stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes were cited for their individual performances, for “on-screen duo” and “best kiss,” while the film also earned a nod for top song (“#1 Crush” by Garbage).

DiCaprio shared top male performance honors with Tom Cruise (“Jerry Maguire”), Eddie Murphy (“The Nutty Professor”), Will Smith (“Independence Day”) and John Travolta (“Phenomenon”).

Besides Danes, the female performances singled out include Sandra Bullock (“A Time to Kill”), Neve Campbell (“Scream”), Helen Hunt (“Twister”) and Madonna (“Evita”).

Jim Carrey individually pulled in three nominations for work in “The Cable Guy” in the “villain,” “comedic performance” and “best fight” categories (sharing the latter honor with Matthew Broderick).

Best baddies

Nominated in the top villain category opposite Carrey are Robert De Niro (“The Fan”), Kiefer Sutherland (“A Time to Kill”), Edward Norton (“Primal Fear”) and Mark Wahlberg (“Fear”), while the other comedy performance nods go to Murphy (“The Nutty Professor”), Chris Farley (“Beverly Hills Ninja”), Janeane Garofalo (“The Truth About Cats & Dogs”) and Robin Williams (“The Birdcage”).

Other nominations include:

* Breakthrough performance: Vivica A. Fox (“Independence Day”), Courtney Love (“The People vs. Larry Flynt”), Matthew McConaughey (“A Time to Kill”), Ewan McGregor (“Trainspotting”), Renee Zellweger (“Jerry Maguire”).

* Song: “Machinehead” (Bush, from “Fear”), “Change the World” (Eric Clapton & Babyface, from “Phenomenon”), “#1 Crush” (Garbage, from “Romeo & Juliet”), “Don’t Cry For Me Argentina” (Madonna, from “Evita”), “I Believe I Can Fly” (R. Kelly, from “Space Jam”).

* Onscreen duo: Beavis & Butt-head” (“Beavis & Butt-head Do America”), Steve Buscemi & Peter Stormare (“Fargo”), Sean Connery & Nicolas Cage (“The Rock”), DiCaprio & Danes (“Romeo & Juliet”), Williams & Nathan Lane (“The Birdcage”).

* Kiss: Christopher Daniel Barnes & Christine Taylor (“A Very Brady Sequel”), Jennifer Tilly & Gina Gershon (“Bound”), Smith & Fox (“Independence Day”), John Travolta & Kyra Sedgwick (“Phenomenon”), Danes & DiCaprio (“Romeo & Juliet”).

* Action sequence: “Mission: Impossible” (train-helicopter chase), “Twister” (truck driving through falling farm equipment), “Independence Day” (aliens blowing up New York, Los Angeles and Washington, D.C.), “Eraser” (Arnold Schwarzenegger freefall), “The Rock” (Ferrari chase through San Francisco).

* Fight: “Cable Guy” (Carrey & Broderick), “Jackie Chan’s First Strike” (Chan & anonymous ladder), “Mars Attacks!” (Jim Brown & anonymous alien), “The Craft” (Fairuza Balk & Robin Tunney), “Barb Wire” (Pamela Lee & anonymous guy).

Among studios, 20th Century Fox led the nominations count with 10, followed by Warner Bros. with eight, TriStar, Hollywood Pictures and Columbia Pictures with five apiece, Paramount and Universal with four each, Miramax, Touchstone and Gramercy Pictures with three, MGM/UA with two and New Line with one.

The MTV Movie Awards nominations are chosen through a national poll of MTV viewers. Winners will also be chosen by the MTV audience through votes cast online and via a special phone number.

Recipients will be announced during an awards ceremony taped June 7 at the Barker Hangar at Santa Monica Airport, with the telecast airing June 12 on MTV.
