O'Brien had been in discussions with Fox about starting a talk show at that network, but negotiations apparently faltered.

The TBS show will air Mondays through Thursdays at 11 p.m. Eastern. "Conan has been the comedic voice for a generation," said Steve Koonin, president of Turner Entertainment Networks. "TBS already has a huge audience of young comedy lovers, and Conan's show will give these fans even more reasons to watch our network. For decades, late-night TV has been dominated by broadcast television. Now, with a young audience and a growing late-night lineup, TBS is set to be the choice of comedy fans for years to come."

O'Brien left The Tonight Show in January after just seven months at the helm. In what was widely seen as a confusing management move, NBC had juggled Jay Leno and O'Brien as hosts. Leno finally moved back to The Tonight Show and succeeded in returning it to top the late-night talk show ratings.

As part of his reported $45-million payout deal with NBC, O'Brien agreed not to host a late-night talk show until September of this year.
