Elise Murray

Elise Murray (nee Clark) is a Senior Marine Parks Officer with the Australian Government Department of Agriculture, Water and the Environment helping manage Australian Marine Parks. Elise graduated with her Masters in Law at the University of Tasmania in 2011, and graduated with her PhD in Law in 2020. Elise's expertise lies in fisheries management and governance arrangements.

In the 21 Century legal environment, there is an increasing demand for law graduates to have a br... moreIn the 21 Century legal environment, there is an increasing demand for law graduates to have a broad knowledge of many areas of law in order to be considered “employment ready.” This development has important ramifications for the curricular structure in Australian law schools, with many law faculties electing to expand the scope of law units to extend beyond understanding “theory” in discreet subject areas and the teaching of traditional skills such as legal reasoning, research and oral presentation skills to practice-based skills such as client interviewing, negotiation, and interpersonal skills. Regional fisheries organisations globally are feeling the impacts of non-compliant behaviour by b... moreRegional fisheries organisations globally are feeling the impacts of non-compliant behaviour by both contracting and non-contracting parties. Non-compliance arising from activities such as illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing, or failures by flag states to appropriately report the activities of their vessels, has resulted in damage to the environment and damage to the performance of regional fisheries management organisations themselves. As a result, many of these organisations are adopting and implementing a relatively new mechanism to tackle non-compliance: the compliance evaluation procedure. This article demonstrates that by adopting a compliance evaluation procedure, regional fisheries organisations are better placed to identify and address non-compliance in an effort to improve compliance with their conservation measures.
