Research paper thumbnail of From Dialogue to Debate. Argumentative and Epic Discourse in Mesopotamian Literature Between II and I Millennium BCE

in the epic of Erra and Išum are analysed comparing both the stylistic level and the main
moral and theological issues the texts bring to the fore. Rhetorical and dialectical means
appear to be deployed as tools for articulating subtle reasoning and arguments. They
allow myth to be subjected to renewed reflection and reworking, deeply transforming
epic narrative. This scenario suggests the emergence of a new figure of sage and literatus,
particularly versed in the art of debate.

Neo-Assyrian Corn Loans: Preliminary Notes
The general typology of loan texts and the functioning of credit procedures in the Neo-Assyrian p... moreThe general typology of loan texts and the functioning of credit procedures in the Neo-Assyrian period have been described by J.N. Postgate in Fifty NeD-Assyrian Legal Documents l . The recent re-edition of a large part of the legal texts from Nineveh by T. K was man presents the documents ordered on the basis of the archives' ownersZ, thus integrating Post gate 's approach and stimulating a dew consideration of the epigraphical material. The identification of the parties involved in the contract and the recognition of their role, by means of the study of every single archive, represents the first step toward establishing the relevance of the various transactions and connecting them to an overall picture of socio-economic conditions . The task of tracing the context of the exchanges requires, on the other hand, meticulous comparisons and the compilation of a prosopography divided into sub-sectors. The present study is meant to be a preliminary contribution to the classification and arrangement of the data drawn from the various archives. The section of texts chosen for this first cataloguing isthat of the corn-loan documents. These texts differ from the silver loans (and may therefore be treated as a separate category) in two significant ways: a) they are linked with the seasonal and productive cycle, a fact which influences the date of issue and repayment, b) they refer to a circuit of utilization of a basic subsistence item, which constitutes a good starting point for the examination of relations between the. parties.

These texts are compared with recently edited literary texts from Mari and from Assur. Similarities and changes are analyzed and the formation of a literary tradition in the scribal milieu, as well as its possible appreciation by military elites, evaluated
4 On the concept of “heroism” and the relation between king and hero in Mesopotamian ideology, see the articulated analysis of Lanfranchi, 2007. The scholar revises the develop- ment of the literary tradition concerning the kings of Akkad starting from the consideration that: “They appear as the main persons in literary compositions dealing with deep philo- sophical problems about royal behaviour, texts that are often designated as ‘legends’, but actually pertain the genre labelled as wisdom” (p. 20). > See Haul, 2009, chap. 5. development shows.’ A central topic of discussion is the category of fictionality and the relationship of legendary tales attributed to historical kings with royal inscriptions they and their successors wrote. The fact that fictional narratives were inscribed on stelae (nari) — or refer to inscriptions on stelae — has conditioned the discussion concerning the nature and function of the texts, which appear to be messages of moral and ideological value for a future audience. The content of this long and crucial discussion is here left in the background, also due to the fact that the use of the term nari over time seems to connote variously the texts it defines.” Taking advantage of its results, however, it seems useful to attempt a comprehen- sive view of a phase of literary elaboration in which the interaction of scribal competence and specific interests in the representation of power induced the re- interpretation of texts and motifs and produced variation and change. interpretation of texts and motifs and produced variation and change.
Simonetta Ponchia The two great themes that this group of texts elaborate are Sargon’s heroism anc conquests and the great revolt against Naram-Sin, likely as a reinterpretation o the kings’ own inscriptions and as a meditation on the fate of kingdoms and dy nasties which started during the Ur III period. This selection of events and th interest in their interpretation continued during the following centuries as illus trated by the paradigmatic value of Sargon’s heroism, as extolled in The King o battle — that has an el-Amarna version and later ones from Assur and Nineveh - and in Naram-Sin’s unfortunate vicissitudes narrated in the Cuthean Legend - which has later versions in Middle Babylonian, from Bogazk6y, and in Neo-As syrian and Neo-Babylonian periods.’

Gilgames, as the son of a goddess and king of Uruk, clearly represents a link between mankind and the divine world, which in Mesopotamian ideology is the basis of kingship, an institution that comes from heaven. He was thus the result of a delicate blend, an alchemy combining god and man.
