Service disruptions
Find information about disruptions on our campuses that could affect users of all abilities to access services. Building, construction, roadway and transit notifications are listed as a service to our UM community.
Washrooms
Accessible, universal-design toilet rooms (UTR) and gender-inclusive (G/I) washrooms are located across UM campuses. These facilities play an important role in reducing barriers and making our campuses safe, accessible and welcoming to all.
Transportation service
UM operates an accessible van to transport people with disabilities between Fort Garry campus facilities. This service is free and organized through SAS.

Accessibility standards and initiatives
UM strives to be a leader in creating an inclusive experience for its students, staff and visitors through various accessibility initiatives and employee training in accordance with accessibility best practices and provincial standards.
Accessibility standards and the AMA
UM actively supports theAccessibility for Manitobans Act (AMA), which became law in December 2013.
The act rolls out mandatory standards over time to address barriers to accessibility, with respect to five areas, in this order: Customer Service, Employment, Information and Communication, Transportation, and Built Environment. All provincial public organizations and businesses have two years to meet each standard after it is rolled out. For each standard, UM creates a corresponding comprehensive plan that is enacted over the following two years.
Employee accessibility training
UM offers three important forms of accessibility training: Employment Accessibility, Customer Service and Information and Communication.
To meet the Customer Service Standard by Nov. 1, 2017, UM created a plan that included accessible customer service training. All UM employees must now be the trained in accessible customer service. This includes new, temporary or part-time employees and anyone working with students, as well as student-employees, and any contractors and subcontractors who work with the university.
To meet the Employment Standard by May 1, 2021, UM created a plan that included accessible employment training. All required UM employees involved in hiring and managing must be trained for assessable employment.
Training may be completed individually or delivered in group sessions by an HR consultant.
To meet the Information and Communication Standard by May 1, 2024, UM created a plan that included accessible information and communication training. The training is mandatory for all UM employees— faculty and staff, including temporary, contract, GFTs and Nil staff.

Built environment and accessibility
Since July of 2017, a team of professionals has assessed and collected data on 111 buildings to identify barriers and areas of risk for people with accessibility needs. Audit recommendations inform UM’s work to minimize or eliminate risk. UM has also set a standard based on inclusive design, which seeks to serve all people equally within an environment.
