Travel across EU borders

The EES is a system for registering non-EU nationals each time they cross a border into or out of the EU. The EES will be operational in October 2025. In late 2026, nationals of visa-exempt non-EU countries are required to obtain an ETIAS travel authorisation before entering Europe.

Entry/Exit System (EES)

The EU will introduce its new Entry/Exit System (EES) on 12 October 2025.

The EES is a system for registering, with a few exceptions, non-EU nationals travelling for a short stay, each time they cross the external borders of 29 European countries. The EES system does not apply to citizens of EU countries.

European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS)

The new European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS) will be introduced in the last quarter of 2026. The ETIAS travel authorisation is a new entry requirement for nationals of visa-exempt non-EU countries travelling to European countries that require the authorisation. Travellers are required to obtain an ETIAS authorisation before entering Europe.
