Structure and properties of the argon-cyanogen van der Waals complexa)

Abstract

The Ar-NCCN van der Waals complex has been studied by molecular beam radiofrequency and microwave spectroscopy. The complex is T shaped having C2v equilibrium geometry. The Ar to NCCN distance is 3.58(1) Å and the zero point bending amplitude is specified by γav=arc cos<cos2γ≳1/2=5.0(2)°. This is analyzed to give 30 cm-1 for the van der Waals bending frequency. Nitrogen quadrupole coupling for the isolated cyanogen molecule is -4.611(2) MHz. The dipole moment of the complex is 0.0979(1) D.
