After decades of Indigenous diplomacy efforts at the UN concerning the concept of "Mother Earth-N... moreAfter decades of Indigenous diplomacy efforts at the UN concerning the concept of "Mother Earth-Nature", there has been a growing recognition of the Rights of Nature (RoN). In an article drawing upon findings from interviews with Indigenous delegates, UN officers and NGO representatives, the RIVERS project examines the contradictions that RoN activism could have in terms of respecting Indigenous Peoples' rights. Indigenous diplomacy at the United Nations has its symbolic origin in 1923 with the visit of Deskaheh Levi General to the incipient League of Nations in Geneva. Although Deskaheh Levi, in his role as the spokesperson of the Haudenousanee peoples (Canada-USA), was not received by the states gathered in Geneva, the then Mayor of the city Mr. Jean-Baptiste Pons extended an invitation to him to deliver his message to the local society. A hundred years later, in July 2023 the current Deskaheh Steve Jacobs, a Haudenousanee delegation and the Mayor of Geneva Alfonso Gomez met in an official reception at Palais Anna and Jean-Gabriel Eynard on the occasion of the centenary of the first encounter. The authors came to know each other through an emergent “whisper network” at their European host ... moreThe authors came to know each other through an emergent “whisper network” at their European host institution that promotes itself and is internationally recognized as progressive, transformative, anti-patriarchal, and de-colonial. Drawing on autoethnographic reflections, we aim to critically unpack the different interconnected layers of power and how cult-like dynamics around a Star Professor have enabled an abusive research culture where its reputation should be untouchable. While we have unique stories, there are many connecting dots among our experiences which allowed us to reflect collectively on analytical concepts such as “sexual-power gatekeepers”, “academic incest”, “intellectual and sexual extractivism”, “gaslighting”, “institutional witch-hunt”. Many young female researchers, who experience harassment, strive to build up their graduate or post-doctoral academic careers working in a precarious labor environment facing institution abandonment and even violation of basic professional ethics. Few understand how academic institutions and their internal dynamics constrain young researchers from standing up and talking publicly. With this chapter, we want to join the growing critical call from within academia for an urgent paradigm shift and strive toward a more caring, collaborative, transformative, and interdependent community.

que a humanos –individuos y grupos afectados por el conflicto armado–.
Este artículo, escrito a cuatro manos, no es un artículo
académico convencional. Por un lado, porque está co-escrito por una magistrada indígena –abogada relatora del macrocaso– y una
investigadora académica –antropóloga jurídica–. Por otro lado, porque es producto de una larga relación dialógica de reflexión crítica, intercambio de experiencias, co-construcción de pensamientos y conocimientos entre las dos autoras. Abordamos el desafío teórico-práctico en la intersección de la justicia transicional, los derechos humanos y el derecho ambiental, destacando la importancia de transformar el pensamiento hegemónico, para una praxis más reflexiva  y  crítica.  Proponemos  nuevos  conceptos  de  análisis:  Territorio  con  mayúscula, múltiples sistemas de vida y resistencia jurídica indígena.  Además, buscamos analizar los desafíos  de  permitir  que  un  Territorio-sujeto  de  derecho  y  víctima  del  conflicto,  con  sus
múltiples sistemas de vida, sea escuchado en la arena jurídica, abordando aspectos como el colonialismo en la justicia transicional y la participación de los Pueblos Indígenas. Se concluye con  reflexiones  hacia  un  nuevo  horizonte  jurídico  donde  lo  imposible  se  transforma  en posibilidad jurídica.

Mientras científicos de distintos campos y de todo el mundo debaten las causas, los impactos, los retos y las soluciones de la llegada del Antropoceno, un nuevo tiempo geológico inducido por el ser humano, el campo del derecho no puede quedarse atrás. En este contexto, los derechos de la naturaleza (RoN), una propuesta que busca otorgar personalidad jurídica a la naturaleza y sus elementos (como los ríos), se han constituido en un marco jurídico transnacional emergente que está rápidamente ganando terreno entre los juristas euroamericanos como nueva herramienta para combatir la destrucción del ambiente. Basado en reflexiones derivadas de un trabajo etnográfico de colaboración a largo plazo con comunidades indígenas en el marco de diferentes proyectos de investigación, este artículo pretende desvelar de forma crítica y empírica varias preocupaciones y puntos ciegos sobre el efecto «bola de nieve» de los RoN en todo el mundo. Se discute, en especial, las posiciones que sostienen que esta nueva propuesta legal está arraigada en los estilos de vida y puntos de vista indígenas sobre la naturaleza y el ambiente.

Despite relevant legal advances, such as the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (2007), the implementation gap between the adoption of international standards by States and their compliance still remains. This article relies on empirical examples from Interactive Dialogues (ID) with the Special Rapporteur on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (SRIP) and the Expert Mechanism on the Right of Indigenous Peoples (EMRIP), held between 2011 and 2021 in the Human Rights Council sessions, to exemplify how these struggles also become noticeable in the public and global arenas. It highlights the emblematic case of conflicting narratives between Indigenous peoples and the Brazilian State in 2020, when the latter strategically used 'misunderstandings' to delegitimize Indigenous peoples' claims. It concludes that the underlying challenge in the implementation of Indigenous peoples' rights rests in ontological conflicts between States and Indigenous peoples, especially concerning the meaning of self-determination. These struggles are reflected in the disputing of narratives in the UN human rights arenas, and have been shaping interpretations of Indigenous peoples' rights that privilege a perspective antagonistic to them. The article provides some practice-oriented recommendations for reducing discourse manipulation at the HRC.

While Indigenous expertise, values and knowledge systems have become a buzzword in academic and p... moreWhile Indigenous expertise, values and knowledge systems have become a buzzword in academic and policy debates about climate change, sustainable development, and the protection of ecosystems, this research note turns the lens to Indigenous legal expertise used by Indigenous lawyers in Nepal in the defence of Indigenous peoples' rights regarding the construction of dams and transmission line projects. Drawing on preliminary insights of legal anthropological research in Nepal, the research note intends to add an additional analytical lens to the emerging concept of cultural expertise of Indigenous knowledge embedded in Indigenous human-water-life ontologies.
Fig. 1 Hydropower development in Marshyangdi corridor (©Nabin Baral/ERC RIVERS Project) which makes it one of the most water-abundant countries in the world providing water for millions of people in the Himalayan region, and of high interest for national and international hydropower development projects and investors. Nepal has been described as a ‘hydropower nation’~* in the making because of the mixture of rich water resources, energy scarcity because of shifting consumption needs, and the possibilities of exporting energy to its neighbouring countries China and India (Fig. 1).

Fig5 Transmission line project in Besisahar, Lamjung district (ONabin Baral/ERC RIVERS Project) over natural resources On the other hand. ~ Tahal shares further that the government is always very aggressive in the regions where the projects are executed, deploying police force, even military force to assure the operation of these projects and to suppress the voices of affected Indigenous peoples (Fig. 5). One of the main claims is the lack of FPIC regarding the planning and implementation of these hydropower projects and the associated transmission lines projects in Indigenous lands. LAHURNIP has been advocating for the compliance of Indigenous peoples’ rights in several big projects. As mentioned above, the ERC RIVERS project will further study a successful joint complaint together with FPIC and Rights Forum from Lamgjung to the Complaint Mechanism regarding the European Investment Bank funded 220 kV Marsyangdi Corridor High voltage transmission line and associated hydropower sector development in that region. The FPIC and Rights Forum is an umbrella organisation for local-level Struggle Committees of Indigenous and non-Indigenous people affected by various power sector projects in the Lamjung district of Nepal, including the 220 kV Marsyangdi Corridor, which is slated to pass over their homes, lands, forests, and community spaces (Fig. 6). LAHURNIP, together with the Accountability Council, a United States-based NGO, supported the FPIC and Rights Forum in submitting in October 2018 a 44-page document to the Complaints Mechanism of the European Investment Bank

The editorial summarizes the interventions in transitional justice paradigms made by the respective contributors to the special section, and highlights their methodological contributions to transitional justice analysis. The editorial finishes with an invitation for further innovation in this field and for new directions in research in this field, together with a note of the additional papers in the current journal issue.

As scientists from different fields and from around the globe are discussing the causes, impacts, challenges, and solutions to the arrival of this human-induced new geological time, the field of law cannot remain behind. Rights of Nature (RoN), granting legal personhood to nature and its elements such as rivers, is an emerging transnational legal framework fast gaining international traction among Euro-American legal scholars as a new tool to combat environmental destruction. Grounded in reflections derived from long-term collaborative ethnographic work among indigenous communities, this article aims to critically and empirically unpack several interrelated concerns and blind spots at this moment of the RoN snowballing effect around the globe related to claims that this new legal proposal is rooted in indigenous lifestyles and views about nature/the environment.

El tercer capítulo, ofrece un análisis interdisciplinario de la acción colectiva de los abogados ... moreEl tercer capítulo, ofrece un análisis interdisciplinario de la acción colectiva de los abogados y abogadas indígenas en Guatemala, que actúan dentro del sistema y que aspiran a su transformación. La acción legal indígena es entendida como una expresión de la resistencia política de los pueblos indígenas, en una sociedad y un Estado marcados por el racismo histórico y estructural. Además, se demuestra cómo los abogados, las abogadas y demás activistas legales que intervienen en el circuito del Derecho occidental, ocupan y ejercen un rol diferenciado de conectores de mundos ante las Cortes. También, se analiza la diversidad de estrategias legales que han implementado y la variedad de medios probatorios empleados para contextualizar los mundos indígenas en los escenarios judiciales. Para este análisis, María Ximena González-Serrano y Lieselotte Viaene realizaron entrevistas virtuales y presenciales con abogados, abogadas, peritos y activistas indígenas de distintas generaciones y procedencias geográficas, triangulando sus testimonios y experiencias de vida con cuerpos de literatura sobre racismo estructural, litigio estratégico, traducción interlegal,  judicialización y juridificación de las políticas indígenas. A su vez, a finales de enero de 2022 las autoras organizaron una mesa de trabajo virtual con los abogados previamente entrevistados, para que ellos pudieran dar su retroalimentación a los resultados de esta investigación.

En el presente artículo nos ha motivado la necesidad de abordar un punto poco estudiado sobre el ... moreEn el presente artículo nos ha motivado la necesidad de abordar un punto poco estudiado sobre el extractivismo en América Latina: los fundamentos coloniales del marco regulatorio de la minería corporativa y los límites de la judicialización de los derechos humanos para lograr su transformación. Nuestro análisis se sustenta en referentes teóricos del campo del litigio estratégico, el origen del derecho internacional y los estudios decoloniales. Empleamos una metodología multiescalar que tomó como estudios de caso, en el plano nacional, a Guatemala y Colombia, y en el internacional al Sistema Interamericano de Derechos Humanos. A su vez, tejimos un diálogo interdisciplinar entre autores con trasfondos diferenciados e integramos una variedad de fuentes académicas y resoluciones judiciales. Así construimos, a partir de los hitos más relevantes, una genealogía colonial de la normativa minera y su continuidad en las regulaciones republicanas y contemporáneas en los países de estudio. Además, identificamos patrones comunes en la judicialización de los conflictos mineros a nivel doméstico e interamericano y evidenciamos su ineficacia en la modificación de las normativas que rigen la minería. Concluimos con una reflexión sobre nuevos caminos teóricos y metodológicos tanto en la práctica jurídica como en la investigación teórica aplicada, posibles horizontes para la descolonización del derecho y en particular del derecho minero.

Water conflicts across the world are bringing to the fore fundamental challenges to the anthropoc... moreWater conflicts across the world are bringing to the fore fundamental challenges to the anthropocentric boundaries of the human rights paradigm. Engaging with the multi-layered legal ethnographic setting of the Xalalá dam project in Maya Q’eqchi’ territory in Guatemala, I will critically and empirically unpack not only the anthropocentric boundaries of the hegemonic human rights paradigm, but also the ontological differences between indigenous and Euro-Western legal conceptualizations of human-water-life. I argue that it is necessary to pave the way for urgent rethinking of the human right to water and, more broadly, human rights beyond the modern divide of nature-culture. International law and human rights scholars should therefore not be afraid of plurilegal water realities and should start engaging with these ontologically different concepts and practices. Embarking on a bottom-up co-theorizing about human and beyond-the-human water rights will be imperative to avoid recolonization of indigenous knowledges-ontologies by non-indigenous scholarships and public policy.

Although Deskaheh Levi, in his role as the spokesperson of the Haudenousanee peoples (Canada-USA), was not received by the states gathered in Geneva, the then Mayor of the city Mr. Jean-Baptiste Pons extended an invitation to him to deliver his message to the local society. A hundred years later, in July 2023 the current Deskaheh Steve Jacobs, a Haudenousanee delegation and the Mayor of Geneva Alfonso Gomez met in an official reception at Palais Anna and Jean-Gabriel Eynard on the occasion of the centenary of the first encounter. After decades of Indigenous diplomacy efforts at the UN concerning the concept of “Mother Earth- Nature”, there has been a growing recognition of the Rights of Nature (RON). In an article drawing upon findings from interviews with Indigenous delegates, UN officers and NGO representatives, the RIVERS project examines the contradictions that RON activism could have in terms of respecting Indigenous Peoples’ rights.

Drawing on autoethnographic reflections, we aim to critically unpack the different interconnected layers of power and how cult-like dynamics around a Star Professor have enabled an abusive research culture where its reputation should be untouchable. While we have unique stories, there are many connecting dots among our experiences which allowed us to reflect collectively on analytical concepts such as “sexual-power gatekeepers”, “academic incest”, “intellectual and sexual extractivism”, “gaslighting”, “institutional witch-hunt”. Many young female researchers, who experience harassment, strive to build up their graduate or post-doctoral academic careers working in a precarious labor environment facing institution abandonment and even violation of basic professional ethics. Few understand how academic institutions and their internal dynamics constrain young researchers from standing up and talking publicly. With this chapter, we want to join the growing critical call from within academia for an urgent paradigm shift and strive toward a more caring, collaborative, transformative, and interdependent community.

académico convencional. Por un lado, porque está co-escrito por una magistrada indígena –abogada relatora del macrocaso– y una
investigadora académica –antropóloga jurídica–. Por otro lado, porque es producto de una larga relación dialógica de reflexión crítica, intercambio de experiencias, co-construcción de pensamientos y conocimientos entre las dos autoras. Abordamos el desafío teórico-práctico en la intersección de la justicia transicional, los derechos humanos y el derecho ambiental, destacando la importancia de transformar el pensamiento hegemónico, para una praxis más reflexiva  y  crítica.  Proponemos  nuevos  conceptos  de  análisis:  Territorio  con  mayúscula, múltiples sistemas de vida y resistencia jurídica indígena.  Además, buscamos analizar los desafíos  de  permitir  que  un  Territorio-sujeto  de  derecho  y  víctima  del  conflicto,  con  sus
múltiples sistemas de vida, sea escuchado en la arena jurídica, abordando aspectos como el colonialismo en la justicia transicional y la participación de los Pueblos Indígenas. Se concluye con  reflexiones  hacia  un  nuevo  horizonte  jurídico  donde  lo  imposible  se  transforma  en posibilidad jurídica.

Mientras científicos de distintos campos y de todo el mundo debaten las causas, los impactos, los retos y las soluciones de la llegada del Antropoceno, un nuevo tiempo geológico inducido por el ser humano, el campo del derecho no puede quedarse atrás. En este contexto, los derechos de la naturaleza (RoN), una propuesta que busca otorgar personalidad jurídica a la naturaleza y sus elementos (como los ríos), se han constituido en un marco jurídico transnacional emergente que está rápidamente ganando terreno entre los juristas euroamericanos como nueva herramienta para combatir la destrucción del ambiente. Basado en reflexiones derivadas de un trabajo etnográfico de colaboración a largo plazo con comunidades indígenas en el marco de diferentes proyectos de investigación, este artículo pretende desvelar de forma crítica y empírica varias preocupaciones y puntos ciegos sobre el efecto «bola de nieve» de los RoN en todo el mundo. Se discute, en especial, las posiciones que sostienen que esta nueva propuesta legal está arraigada en los estilos de vida y puntos de vista indígenas sobre la naturaleza y el ambiente.

Despite relevant legal advances, such as the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (2007), the implementation gap between the adoption of international standards by States and their compliance still remains. This article relies on empirical examples from Interactive Dialogues (ID) with the Special Rapporteur on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (SRIP) and the Expert Mechanism on the Right of Indigenous Peoples (EMRIP), held between 2011 and 2021 in the Human Rights Council sessions, to exemplify how these struggles also become noticeable in the public and global arenas. It highlights the emblematic case of conflicting narratives between Indigenous peoples and the Brazilian State in 2020, when the latter strategically used 'misunderstandings' to delegitimize Indigenous peoples' claims. It concludes that the underlying challenge in the implementation of Indigenous peoples' rights rests in ontological conflicts between States and Indigenous peoples, especially concerning the meaning of self-determination. These struggles are reflected in the disputing of narratives in the UN human rights arenas, and have been shaping interpretations of Indigenous peoples' rights that privilege a perspective antagonistic to them. The article provides some practice-oriented recommendations for reducing discourse manipulation at the HRC.

While Indigenous expertise, values and knowledge systems have become a buzzword in academic and p... moreWhile Indigenous expertise, values and knowledge systems have become a buzzword in academic and policy debates about climate change, sustainable development, and the protection of ecosystems, this research note turns the lens to Indigenous legal expertise used by Indigenous lawyers in Nepal in the defence of Indigenous peoples' rights regarding the construction of dams and transmission line projects. Drawing on preliminary insights of legal anthropological research in Nepal, the research note intends to add an additional analytical lens to the emerging concept of cultural expertise of Indigenous knowledge embedded in Indigenous human-water-life ontologies.

Nepal has been described as a ‘hydropower nation’~* in the making because of the mixture of rich water resources, energy scarcity because of shifting consumption needs, and the possibilities of exporting energy to its neighbouring countries China and India (Fig. 1).

One of the main claims is the lack of FPIC regarding the planning and implementation of these hydropower projects and the associated transmission lines projects in Indigenous lands. LAHURNIP has been advocating for the compliance of Indigenous peoples’ rights in several big projects. As mentioned above, the ERC RIVERS project will further study a successful joint complaint together with FPIC and Rights Forum from Lamgjung to the Complaint Mechanism regarding the European Investment Bank funded 220 kV Marsyangdi Corridor High voltage transmission line and associated hydropower sector development in that region. The FPIC and Rights Forum is an umbrella organisation for local-level Struggle Committees of Indigenous and non-Indigenous people affected by various power sector projects in the Lamjung district of Nepal, including the 220 kV Marsyangdi Corridor, which is slated to pass over their homes, lands, forests, and community spaces (Fig. 6). LAHURNIP, together with the Accountability Council, a United States-based NGO, supported the FPIC and Rights Forum in submitting in October 2018 a 44-page document to the Complaints Mechanism of the European Investment Bank

Rights of Nature (RoN), granting legal personhood to nature and its elements such as rivers, is an emerging transnational legal framework fast gaining international traction among Euro-American legal scholars as a new tool to combat environmental destruction. Grounded in reflections derived from long-term collaborative ethnographic work among indigenous communities, this article aims to critically and empirically unpack several interrelated concerns and blind spots at this moment of the RoN snowballing effect around the globe related to claims that this new legal proposal is rooted in indigenous lifestyles and views about nature/the environment.

La acción legal indígena es entendida como una expresión de la resistencia política de los pueblos indígenas, en una sociedad y un Estado marcados por el racismo histórico y estructural. Además, se demuestra cómo los abogados, las abogadas y demás activistas legales que intervienen en el circuito del Derecho occidental, ocupan y ejercen un rol diferenciado de conectores de mundos ante las Cortes. También, se analiza la diversidad de estrategias legales que han implementado y la variedad de medios probatorios empleados para contextualizar los mundos indígenas en los escenarios judiciales. Para este análisis, María Ximena González-Serrano y Lieselotte Viaene realizaron entrevistas virtuales y presenciales con abogados, abogadas, peritos y activistas indígenas de distintas generaciones y procedencias geográficas, triangulando sus testimonios y experiencias de vida con cuerpos de literatura sobre racismo estructural, litigio estratégico, traducción interlegal,  judicialización y juridificación de las políticas indígenas. A su vez, a finales de enero de 2022 las autoras organizaron una mesa de trabajo virtual con los abogados previamente entrevistados, para que ellos pudieran dar su retroalimentación a los resultados de esta investigación.

En el presente artículo nos ha motivado la necesidad de abordar un punto poco estudiado sobre el ... moreEn el presente artículo nos ha motivado la necesidad de abordar un punto poco estudiado sobre el extractivismo en América Latina: los fundamentos coloniales del marco regulatorio de la minería corporativa y los límites de la judicialización de los derechos humanos para lograr su transformación. Nuestro análisis se sustenta en referentes teóricos del campo del litigio estratégico, el origen del derecho internacional y los estudios decoloniales. Empleamos una metodología multiescalar que tomó como estudios de caso, en el plano nacional, a Guatemala y Colombia, y en el internacional al Sistema Interamericano de Derechos Humanos. A su vez, tejimos un diálogo interdisciplinar entre autores con trasfondos diferenciados e integramos una variedad de fuentes académicas y resoluciones judiciales. Así construimos, a partir de los hitos más relevantes, una genealogía colonial de la normativa minera y su continuidad en las regulaciones republicanas y contemporáneas en los países de estudio. Además, identificamos patrones comunes en la judicialización de los conflictos mineros a nivel doméstico e interamericano y evidenciamos su ineficacia en la modificación de las normativas que rigen la minería. Concluimos con una reflexión sobre nuevos caminos teóricos y metodológicos tanto en la práctica jurídica como en la investigación teórica aplicada, posibles horizontes para la descolonización del derecho y en particular del derecho minero.

Engaging with the multi-layered legal ethnographic setting of the Xalalá dam project in Maya Q’eqchi’ territory in Guatemala, I will critically and empirically unpack not only the anthropocentric boundaries of the hegemonic human rights paradigm, but also the ontological differences between indigenous and Euro-Western legal conceptualizations of human-water-life. I argue that it is necessary to pave the way for urgent rethinking of the human right to water and, more broadly, human rights beyond the modern divide of nature-culture. International law and human rights scholars should therefore not be afraid of plurilegal water realities and should start engaging with these ontologically different concepts and practices. Embarking on a bottom-up co-theorizing about human and beyond-the-human water rights will be imperative to avoid recolonization of indigenous knowledges-ontologies by non-indigenous scholarships and public policy.

Whenever a society faces the difficult process of substantial political transition after a period... moreWhenever a society faces the difficult process of substantial political transition after a period of gross human rights violations, the issues of justice, reconciliation, truth and reparation appear on the agenda. They form the key concepts of the emerging global paradigm of transitional justice. This booming field is faced with several unresolved and contested issues one of which is a criticism based on local and cultural particularities. In this article it is argued that it is useful to draw lessons from the universalitydiversity debate in international human rights law and confront them with local and cultural challenges that arise in the transitional justice context. It seems that the ideal of inclusiveness that remains hard to realise in human rights law, despite theoretical consensus, might have better chances of being put in practice in transitional justice initiatives.

El presente trabajo sobre pueblos indígenas y justicia transicional, fundamentado en una investigación antropológica jurídica en Guatemala, pretende contribuir a reducir la brecha de conocimiento en torno a entendimientos y prácticas indígenas sobre justicia, reparación, búsqueda de verdad y reconciliación para enfrentar las graves violaciones de derechos humanos sufridos durante el conflicto armado (1960-1996). Un hallazgo central de esta investigación es que los procesos de justicia transicional en las comunidades indígenas están permeados por una fuerte dimensión espiritual que problematiza aceptaciones antropocéntricas de los derechos humanos. Este estudio concluye que la visión hegemónica de justicia transicional aún no se ha enfrentado a los retos apremiantes que provocan las visiones indígenas que cuestionan las divisiones de la ontología moderna dominante entre cultura/naturaleza, mente/cuerpo, humanos/no humanos, creencia/realidad. El libro concluye con recomendaciones que los diseñadores de políticas de justicia transicional deberían tomar en consideración cuando elaboran sus intervenciones y mecanismos de justicia transicional para sobrevivientes y comunidades indígenas que enfrentan las secuelas de un pasado lleno de atrocidades.

Transitional Justice is fundamentally about the restoration of broken relationships in the wake o... moreTransitional Justice is fundamentally about the restoration of broken relationships in the wake of mass violence and political conflict through the pursuit of societal accountability, public justice, reconciliation and restoring integrity to a broken system. So far, the dominant view within the field is that questions and responses about justice, reparation, historical memory, reconciliation and guarantees of non-repetition begin and end with human beings, their rights and their interests. This underlying assumption limits our conceptions of the perpetrator, victim and survivor of gross human rights violations to human beings. It excludes rivers, mountains, oceans, animals, plants, soil or the sense of how these things are interconnected.

This special issue seeks to address an urgent need to generate dialogue between transitional justice scholars and environmental stakeholders about the nexus of (post) conflict issues and debates about “ecology”, “nature” and “environment” through a variety of critical lenses including posthumanism, (neo)-extractivism, ecofeminism, de/post-colonialism and/or indigenous and inter-legal perspectives.
