The Tyler Prize for Environmental Achievement 2025 Awarded to Sandra Díaz and Eduardo Brondízio

Argentine ecologist Sandra Díaz and Brazilian-American anthropologist Eduardo Brondízio are being awarded the 2025 Tyler Prize for Environmental Achievement for their extraordinary work linking biodiversity to humankind.

The Tyler Prize Executive Committee will award the USD $250,000 Prize to Díaz and Brondízio for their “commitment to understanding and addressing biodiversity loss and its impact on human societies.”

They are the first individual recipients from South America to receive the Tyler Prize.

SANDRA DÍAZ

Sandra Díaz is one of the world’s leading ecologists, celebrated for her interdisciplinary work, her research on vascular plant functional traits, their responses to the environment and their impact on ecosystems and human well-being. Her leadership has been instrumental in shaping the global conversation about the biodiversity crisis and the urgent need for transformative change in our relationship with the natural world.

EDUARDO BRONDÍZIO

Eduardo Brondízio is a global authority on human-environment interactions and social-environmental change in the Amazon region. His work in Amazonia and at the global level has shaped environmental policy and practice and has been instrumental in bridging social and environmental sciences in global environmental initiatives. His work has played a crucial role in assessing the contribution of Indigenous and local knowledge (ILK) to biodiversity conservation and environmental governance.

Leading Voices, Inspiring Excellence

Established in 1973 by the late John and Alice Tyler, the Tyler Prize for Environmental Achievement was the first prize of its kind to recognize achievement in environmental science. For more than fifty years, the prize has been awarded to scientists, policymakers, and thought leaders whose groundbreaking work has advanced environmental science, conservation, and sustainability worldwide.

Recipients of the prize (known as our Laureates) work across diverse fields within environmental science including conservation, public policy and economics on issues including health, air, water pollution, biodiversity loss, and energy. The $250,000 prize is awarded to any individual or organization from any part of the world that has worked to deliver global solutions for environmental impact.
