Week 2, Day 7

CHECKMATE! is a day inNEO: The World Ends with You.

Synopsis[]

With the help of theVariabeauties, a regretfulMotoi Anazawa, andShoka Sakurane who has been exiled from the Reapers, the Twisters are able to defeatKaichi "Susukichi" Susuki andTsugumi Matsunae to claim first place from theRuinbringers. However, Game MasterShiba Miyakaze reveals that he is the leader of the Ruinbringers and intends to destroy Shibuya. Summoning unbeatablePlague Noise, Rindo is forced to surrender to Shiba who rules that the "battle" restores the Ruinbringers to first place and erasesMotoi Anazawa and thePurehearts.

Plot[]

Rindo recieves a message fromKanon Tachibana stating thatKaichi "Susukichi" Susuki is wandering the city, and that the Ruinbringers typically operate alone unless in severe danger, in which case they call for backup. She plans to attempt to waylayTsugumi Matsunae to allow the Twisters to attack Susukichi.Motoi Anazawa also contacts him stating that he also intends to fight Susukichi. Rindo decides that they should look for Motoi to warn him not to attack until Kanon is ready.

The Twisters are then approached by a dejectedShoka Sakurane who explains that she has been thrown out of the Reapers and is now a Player. She explains that she helped them because the Game is now pointless, since it can only loop until every team is erased. After seeing her apparently having difficulty fighting Noise, Rindo asks her to join the Twisters, and she accepts.

When Rindo meets Motoi, he explains that he sent the message only to ensure they'd look for him, and that he wants to join their fight against Susukichi. Rindo is angry at having been manipulated again, and Motoi admits that he had no idea what effects his posts as AnOther really did, since he never met a fan in person and the worst that could happen is they would unfollow him. Rindo agrees to give him a chance, and he tells them Susukichi is at O-EAST. The Twisters find that he is there, but when Rindo contacts Kanon to let him know he's about to fight, Susukichi leaves. The Twisters frantically chase Susukichi through the city, but Support Reapers constantly close off streets in front of them and attack them with Noise, until Rindo gets a message that Kanon has been defeated.

UsingReplay, Rindo returns to the start of the day. Shoka is intriuged by this, and suggests that they could hide from the pursuing Support Reapers using herTelewarp ability. After doing so, the Twisters are able to confront Susukichi in time and leave him stunned. They leave Motoi to watch him and go to help Kanon fight Tsugumi, leading to a second fight againstMr. Mew. After this, however, Tsugumi transforms into a bizarre Noise Form and initiates a third fight.

With the defeat of Tsugumi, the Wicked Twisters knock the Ruinbringers out of first place, andShiba Miyakaze appears. He announces thathe is the leader of the Ruinbringers, declares that he is aware of Rindo's Replay ability and aware that he has already used it that day, and floods the area withPlague Noise. Susukichi arrives, followed by Motoi who reports that he was unable to stop Susukichi as he regained his strength after the fight almost immediately. The Twisters realise that in fact, the Ruinbringers are Reapers. Under threat of certain erasure by waves of Plague Noise, Rindo is forced to declare a surrender and Shiba declares this win worth sufficient points to make the Ruinbringers the winners, and erases the Purehearts and Motoi.

Ayano offers Shoka the option to rejoin the Reapers, but she breaks down and refuses, saying that she won't allow them to "destroy Shibuya".Uzuki Yashiro andKoki Kariya are shocked to hear this, suspecting that the Shinjuku Reapers were also involved in the destruction of Shinjuku. In an afterpiece,Coco Atarashi finds the destroyed Mr. Mew doll.

Susukichi behaves similarly to how he did onWeek 1, Day 7 (NEO) except that he deals more damage, his charges are faster and he always uses punch combos. He also has new patterns for his Reversi psych which do not contain any blank squares; however, as before, the corners are always safe.

Mr. Mew behaves similar to how he did onWeek 2, Day 2 (NEO) except that he is in his final mode from the start.

• The Twisters have already met and interacted with multiple people, such as the Shibuya Reapers, who would be perfectly aware that the Ruinbringers are the Shinjuku Reapers. It is likely that they kept the secret only under threat of reprisals from Shiba.
