Tuscaloosa's prestigious NorthRiver Yacht Club is back in local hands after a team of area investors purchased the property in a deal that closed this week.

The group consists of Joe Gillis, Chris Mobley and Miller Mobley, Kenny Short, and Andy Turner -the same crew responsible for the new Captain's Club on Lake Tuscaloosa within the same NorthRiver community.

They have purchased the Club from Troon, an Arizona-based company that manages over 940 clubs offering golf, racquet sports, aquatics, and more.

Although the west Alabama investors will own and lead the NorthRiver Yacht Club, they said Troon will continiue to oversee day-to-day operations there.

“We are honored to take on the stewardship of NorthRiver, a place that means so much to our families and this community,” said Andy Turner, speaking on behalf of the ownership group.

"Our vision is to build upon the incredible traditions of this club, investing in its future and enhancing the experiences that make NorthRiver truly special.” Miller Mobley added, “We are excited to bring the same attention to the design, the atmosphere, and the overall energy of how places feel that we began at Captain’s Club to Northriver.”

Leadership at Troon also praised the deal and said they will focus sharply on exceptional service, golf and the member experience.

“NorthRiver Yacht Club is a jewel of Tuscaloosa, and we are excited to continue working alongside the new ownership group,” said David Stinson, Vice President of Operations at Troon. “Together, we look forward to elevating the member and guest experience for years to come.”

In a release provided by the new ownership group, Turner said the Yacht Club was founded in 1978 by Tuscaloosa's own legendary businessman and philanthropist Jack Warner. The unique architecture and beauty of Lake Tuscaloosa have made the private club of Alabama's finest, and members enjoy golf, tennis, pickleball, fitness, aquatics, dining, and more.
