Pomona-Pitzer (P-P) athletics experienced significant fluctuations in expenses from the 2022-23 to the 2023-24 season. With a 364 percent increase in expenses for baseball between seasons and a $241,340 decrease for football, patterns emerge for athletes and students alike.

The Panthers clawed their way to victory at the Women’s Division 2AA National Championships on April 19. The Claremont Colleges women’s club volleyball team competed against teams from across the country and beat American University in the finals to claim the trophy.

On the heels of last year’s college world series appearance, Sagehens baseball got a much-needed sixth Street win over the Stags in a 2-1 series victory at home on April 12. Despite a somewhat disappointing follow-up to last year’s success, the Sagehens are still just one game back of the third-seeded Stags in the SCIAC.

On April 5, Harvey Mudd College hosted the second annual Dean Chris Classic (DCC), organized by Dean Chris Sundberg himself. In the classic, students had an opportunity to play in a 16-team, 5v5 basketball tournament.

Despite a mostly successful season, the Sagehens softball team continued their 5-game losing streak with a loss against Chapman University on Friday, April 4. Regardless of the game outcome, Coach JoAnne Ferguson emphasized the strength of this year’s unit after the game.

Watching sports is much better with a great commentator, regardless of the level. The 5Cs have some of the best commentators in the Division III game, many of whom are former athletes themselves. Matt Eichner PO ’26 was forced into early retirement by injury and took up the mantle of the Pomona-Pitzer (P-P) men’s baseball commentator.

Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (CMS) Women’s Tennis continued their reign of dominance on Friday, March 28, smiting a new challenger. The University of Wisconsin Whitewater found themselves bested at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center, as CMS secured a 7-0 victory.

Pomona-Pitzer (P-P) women’s water polo dunked the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (CMS) Athenas to extend their streak to 73 straight wins in the SCIAC in a close 7-5 Sixth Street matchup. This impressive victory came on the back of a hat-trick by Brienz Lang PO ‘26, who also scored the opening goal. But Lang recognized the team effort that helped pull in the win.

Amidst the mayhem of brackets and betting, Charlotte Renner PZ ’27 critiques the streaming deals that perpetuate a pattern of sexism in sports viewership. As a lover of all things sports, Renner hopes to see a change in how women’s athletes are supported and appreciated.
