Page 4 - GRIPS HIS SEAT AND WAITS FOR THE CRASH
[?]
MELBOURNE, Tuesday.
He saw, gripping his seat with both hands, a hill
and trees ahead which his plane, roaring at 130 miles
on hour, could not escape.
The plane crashed, he was stunned, three mates were killed,
a fourth lay dying, muttering "I'm pretty bad!"
Giving this evidence today
to Coroner Tingate, P.M.,
James Glover, aircraftsman
of Point Cook, added that he
could not say how the
R.A.A.F. Avro Anson bomber
came to be off its course as it
bore down upon the destruc-
tive landscape at Arthur's
Seat, Dromana, on August 10.
"We suddenly emerged from a cloud
bank and, directly in front of us, and
only a short distance away, I saw trees
and a hill," he said.
"I knew a crash was unavoidable."
The coroner found that Robert Sym-
monds (22), pilot officer of Ade-
laide; John Gillespie, sergeant pilot
(28), of St. Kilda; Kenneth McKerrow,
aircraftsman (23), of Carnegie, and Ro-
bert Mawson (28), aircraftsman, of
Turramurra, N.S.W., died when their
Avro Anson accidentally came into col-
lision with the side of the hill near
Arthur's Seat.
"I am unable to say just how the
plane came to be on the course it was
on, but I am quite satisfied the colli-
sion was an accidental one," Mr. Tin-
gate said.
Glover, who was injured in a leg and
suffered abrasions in the crash, had a
slight scar under his chin, but looked
quite well, and gave his evidence
clearly.
Squadron Leader Knox Knight, of
No. 2 Squadron R.A.A.F. (who ap-
peared in the interests of the service)
said that Glover was a recruit.
"I gripped the seat with both hands,"
said Glover, in evidence, describing his
experience. "I remember the plane
crashing into trees and a hillside.
"As a result of it I was stunned.
"I'm Pretty Bad"
"Later, I remember climbing out of
the plane, which was badly wrecked.
The four others had been thrown out.
"Mawson was still conscious, and
said: "I am pretty bad."
The others, witness added, were
dead.
Glover said they left Laverton in
an Avro Anson bomber, twin-engined,
plane at 8.55 a.m. Flight Sergeant
Gillespie was pilot. Pilot Officer
Symmonds navigator, McKerrow wire-
less operator, Mawson fitter, and he
(Glover) was there for general repairs,
if required.
"Mawson and I inspected the plane
and engines prior to the departure,"
Glover said.
